Vintage Glass Ashtray – SOLD

Vintage hand-blown ashtray

Vintage hand-blown ashtray

I know that ashtrays aren’t that PC these days, but they’re just so beautiful! I quit smoking a couple of years ago, but when we moved into our new house in Joburg, my collection of glass ashtrays was one of the first things that I unpacked! Plus in addition to being great decor pieces, it’s also always handy to have an ashtray (or two!) at home in case you have guests round who do smoke – so much nicer than cigarette butts in your pot plants!

Note: This amber ashtray is in good condition, but there are a few fleabite chips on the underside of the glass, and a scratch on the side of the ashtray

Dimensions: 14cm in diameter x 5cm tall

Price: R150

Large Retro Ashtray – SOLD

13 Nov

Large retro glass ashtray

Large retro glass ashtray

This really is a lovely piece of glass! Not only is it a great colour (I’ve got a bit of a thing for green at the moment), but it’s a nice large ashtray and in perfect condition! I’ve sold a few of these ashtrays over the years, but I don’t really know anything about them? The shape is very similar to some of the Murano ashtrays, but the glass is much thinner, so I’m really not sure of their provenance. What I do know is that it’s really quiet beautiful and a great piece for any glass collectors out there!

Note: There looks to be some dirt trapped under the glass, but it’s in the glass, not under, so must have happened during the glass-blowing process.

Dimensions: 15.5cm in diameter x 6cm tall

Price: R250

Murano-Style Ashtray – SOLD

10 Nov

Small bullicante ashtray

Small bullicante ashtray

This is quite a petite ashtray, but I love the colour, and of course I’m a big fan of this bullicante Murano glass! The green’s a bit brighter than vintage green glass normally is, which shows off those bubbles beautifully! And it doesn’t hurt matters that the glass is in such good nick!

Dimensions: 11cm in diameter x 4.5cm tall

Price: R200

Retro Arabia Ashtray – SOLD

6 Nov

Arabia Finland ashtray by Kaj Franck

Arabia Finland ashtray by Kaj Franck

This is the first time that I’ve come across this Arabia ashtray in green glass. I see them for sale now and again, but all the versions I’ve ever seen have been clear glass, and I have to say I think the green makes it a much more interesting piece! In typical Scandinavian style this ashtray is a very simple design, but as beautiful as its simplicity is, the colour adds another dimension of interest. Not that I should criticise anything designed by Arabia, let alone by Kaj Franck who was responsible for designing this ‘Cigaro‘ ashtray. Some sites state that the ashtray was originally designed for Nuutajärvi (owned by the same holding company as Arabia) in the mid 1950s, and others that it was manufactured for Arabia in the late ’60s. I suppose it’s possible that it was made under both names at different times? Regardless it;s a very handsome chunk of glass that would make a great addition to a mid-century collection.

Note: There is a very small fleabite chip on the one corner, but it really is barely noticeable. The glass is also a darker green than it appears in the photographs.

Dimensions: 10cm long x 8.5cm wide x 6.5cm tall

Price: R230

Small Murano-Style Ashtray – SOLD

30 Oct

Small Murano-style bubble ashtray

Small Murano-style bubble ashtray

Whoever owned this Murano ashtray previously made good use of it – it has plenty of fine scratches showing that it’s been very well used over the years, but it’s still a very attractive piece of glass. It’s a classic Murano design with that flowing organic shape and controlled bubbles (which is where the glass gets the name ‘bullicante’), and of course that bright red colour! I think it’s probably the colour that I like the most – a collection of Murano ashtrays in these bright colours makes for a very striking display.

Vintage Glass Ashtray – SOLD

7 Oct

Vintage glass ashtray

Vintage glass ashtray

It’s a day of pairs! This is the green version of the yellow ashtray that we sold last month. It’s identical, with its white swirls and organic shape, really the only difference is the colour. It’s also in just as good a nick, with no real signs of wear.

A fun bit of glass that would make a nice addition to a collection of ashtrays.

Dimensions: 8cm tall x 13cm in diameter

Price: R220
