Crocheted Blanket – SOLD

Crocheted blanket

Crocheted blanket

I think that this is the first crocheted blanket that I’ve put up for sale this winter – they’ve become quite hard to find as more and more people start collecting them! This isn’t the largest blanket, but it’s nice and wide so will easily fit along the width of a queen-sized bed (or length-wise on a single bed), which is great as often the older blankets were made for double beds. The wool has started to pull a bit in places, but overall it’s not in bad nick at all.

A sweet blanket for the bedroom or the lounge – it can keep you cosy while you crochet the next family heirloom!

Dimensions: 2m long x 1.10m wide

Price: R170

Crocheted Bedspreads – SOLD

10 Oct

Crocheted 3/4 or double bedspread

Crocheted 3/4 or double bedspread

I bought these beautiful crocheted bedspreads at the same time, and given that the pattern is almost identical I think it’s safe to assume that they were made by the same person, although I suspect years apart. The 3/4 (or double bed at a bit of a stretch) seems to be much newer – the cotton is a crisp white and on the whole the bedspread is much stiffer than the massive king size throw. The king size is more of a cream than a white (it’s a bit darker than it looks in the pics), and has become a bit flopsy with age (if that makes any sense?). Despite the massive difference in size I’m selling them for the same price to give you an indication of condition – even though the smaller bedspread has a few rust stains (see pics under ‘more’) I still think that it’s in much better nick than the larger throw, although both are still definitely useable and will look lovely in any bedroom (unless you’re a teenage boy that is!).

Dimensions: 3/4 or double bed spread – 2m wide x 2.1m long; King size bedspread 2.5m wide x 2.6m long

Price: R250 each

Small Crocheted Blanket – SOLD

14 Aug

Small crocheted blanket

Small crocheted blanket

Sadly this isn’t the largest blanket – I’d guess that it was designed to lie at the bottom of a single bed, but I know how long it takes to crochet blankets so I don’t hold anything against the lady (or man!) who likely toiled away at it for months on end! What is great about it though is that it’s in mint condition, which makes me think that it’s probably new, or at least has hardly ever been used. And of course the other major plus is that it’s been beautifully crocheted by somebody with an eye for colour – while most hand-made blankets have a certain charm about them, I do have to wonder about some of the colour schemes I’ve seen over the years!

The perfect house warming gift for somebody with a spare bedroom, or a little boy or girl’s room that needs a bit of a soft touch.

Dimensions: 140cm wide x 160cm long

Price: R280

Vintage Child’s Eiderdown – SOLD

7 Jun

Vintage child's eiderdown

Vintage child’s eiderdown

This is only the second time that I’ve ever come across a proper eiderdown! We had them as children – my grandmother brought them for us from England – so I was delighted the first time I happened upon a pair of them. Unfortunately, though, while the fabric on this quilt is still in very good condition, the eiderdown filling inside has lost a bit of its bounce. The eiderdown I had as a child was super-fluffy, as were the two that I found a while back, but this version is a bit flat, if you know what I mean? But it’s still very special, and would look wonderful on a little girl’s bed (it’s not quite wide enough to lie across a double bed). The pink paisley pattern is really quite lovely, and although there’s a little bit of fraying to the edges the quilt, it still has plenty of life left in it and is guaranteed to make some child (or adult!) very happy indeed!

Note: I haven’t washed the quilt. I think that it will be best hand-washed, or ideally dry-cleaned.

Dimensions: 160cm long x 11cm wide

Price: R190

Crocheted Blanket – SOLD

20 May

Double bed crocheted blanket

Double bed crocheted blanket

I don’t think that this blanket’s particularly old, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to something that you’re going to go to bed with! It’s also not particularly fine work, but the colours are fantastic and even though it’s likely made with leftover bits of wool, the quality of the wool’s not bad at all. It’s slightly too small for my queen-sized bed, so I think it’s likely that it was made for a double bed, but as with all things hand-crafted blanket’s aren’t an exact science so it’s not likely to fit perfectly. A nice cheerful blanket that will brighten up any room!

Dimensions: Approx. 2m x 2m

Price: R250

Vintage Cotton Bedspread – SOLD

15 Jan

Vintage queen-size cotton bedspread

Vintage queen-size cotton bedspread

I feel a bit cheeky charging the price I am for this vintage crocheted bedspread, but it really is quite something! It came from the house of an elderly woman, but I can’t quite remember whether it was made y her or her mother, either way I think that it’s at least 50 years old. But in this case age really doesn’t matter – it’s the beauty of the piece and the skill involved that make it so special. I’ve been crocheting for a good 10 years now, and I think that it would probably take me another 10 to finish something this technical! Plus being made of cotton (or at least a very cotton-rich yarn) it has a really nice weight to it, so it falls really well. This is the perfect throw for a climate like SAs – it’ll give you that little bit of extra warmth you need in winter, and will be the perfect blanket for summer when the only thing you can bare is a sheet with a light blanket!

Note: Having a bit of age behind it there is a bit of wear and tear and you can see a few places where the blanket’s been repaired, but I think all the holes have been patched.

P.S. There are some similar throws selling on Etsy for $440 & $490

Dimensions: 220cm x 220cm (will fit queen or king size bed)

Price: R600
