Villeroy & Boch Casserole Dish – SOLD

23 Nov

Villeroy & Boch casserole dish

Villeroy & Boch casserole dish

It’s a funny thing, but I seem to find things in pairs. They might not be exactly the same, but this Villeroy & Boch casserole dish is definitely from the same series as that great black & yellow baking dish that we featured a few weeks back. I’m pretty sure that both pieces are in the Biarritz pattern, designed by V&B in the 1950s. The shape is very ’50s, as is the rather striking colour combo – black combined with brightly coloured glazes was quite popular in mid-century design.

A very handsome casserole dish in near mint condition.

Dimensions: 21cm in diameter x 10cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R240

Melamine Part-Tea set – SOLD

7 Sep

Melamine 'Duray' tea set

Melamine ‘Duray’ tea set

This is probably one of the more expensive Melamine sets that I’ve bought, but probably also one of the nicest! While it won’t be for everyone, personally I really like the olivey-brown colour, which contrasts so nicely with the white interior. The condition of the set is also great – there are some light scratches from use (not visible in the photos), but no real damage, although sadly one of the saucers is missing. On the plus side though it does have all six side plates, a cake plate, plus a matching milk jug and sugar bowl.

A great set for camping – although I think it’s probably a bit too nice for the outdoors – if it were mine to keep it would have pride of place on my kitchen shelf!

Dimensions: Cups – 6.5cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Saucers – 14.5cm in diameter; Side plates – 16.5cm in diameter; Cake plate – 21.5cm in diameter; Milk jug – 9.5cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 7cm tall x 10cm in diameter

Price: R290 for the set (20 pieces in total)

Mint puts up four new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third and fourth at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog (more…)

Wood and Sons Casserole Dish – SOLD

17 Aug

Wood & Sons casserole dish

Wood & Sons casserole dish

There’s a bit of wear to this Wood & Sons casserole dish, but how could I resist that lovely lemon yellow glaze? And that fantastic retro shape? Plus the most obvious wear is on the underside of the lid, which isn’t going to be noticeable unless you turn the lid upside down. There’re also one or two marks on the rim of the dish, but otherwise the casserole dish isn’t in bad nick for its years.

Dimensions: 11m tall x 26cm long x 23cm wide

Price: R130

Meakin Casserole Dish – SOLD

13 Aug

J&G Meakin 'Glamour' casserole dish

J&G Meakin ‘Glamour’ casserole dish

This beautiful buttercup-yellow casserole dish from J&G Meakin dates to sometime between 1918 and 1963 (that’s when Sol Ware was produced), but I’d guess that this particular shape was designed in the late 1940s, or early ’50s. I love the shape of the lid (so graceful!), and the glaze, while not wildly exciting, is still very pretty. There are a few very minor marks, but given its age, this casserole dish is in pretty decent nick!

Dimensions: 22cm in diameter x 13cm tall

Price: R150

1960s Noritake Casserole Dish – SOLD

30 Jun

Noritake casserole dish

Noritake casserole dish

This ‘Blue Rhapsody’ casserole dish is quite different to most of the Noritake that you come across. There’s a certain refinement to a Noritake glaze that is easy to recognise, and which is lacking in this piece, but I really like the fact that it’s a bit more naive. The pattern’s also quite different, with a bit of a Scandi feel to it. I like the fact that it’s quite a large dish, and going on the name ‘Cook ‘n Serve‘ (don’t you love that font?!), I assume that you can use this dish in the oven, which is always a nice bonus!

A very attractive casserole dish from a very respected name in dinnerware.

Dimensions: 23.5cm in diameter x 11cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R230

Retro Meakin Casserole Dishes – SOLD

25 Jun

Pair of Alfred Meakin 'Glo-White' casserole dishes

Pair of Alfred Meakin ‘Glo-White’ casserole dishes

I think these casserole dishes might be some of the nicest pieces that I’ve seen from Alfred Meakin, and it’s not like I’m not a Meakin fan! The bowls are obviosly very simple, but the pattern on the lids is just outstanding! I love the dark blue glaze, and that raised zigzag pattern’s a real winner!

Note: There are some minor marks on the inside of the one bowl (see pics under ‘more’), but otherwise both dishes are in excellent condition.

Dimensions: Each dish measures 11cm tall (with lids on) x 20cm in diameter

Price: R180 each
