Westclox Wall Clock – SOLD

Retro Westclox wall clock

Retro Westclox wall clock

I think that this is quite a special clock – it’s definitely not the type of clock you see that often for sale in South Africa. The brass frame reminds me of the classic sunburst clocks, although it’s obviously not quite as large. The brass could do with a bit of a polish, but I quite like the matte, slightly tarnished look. The nature of the cut-out frame means that it’s slightly flexible, and it’s been slightly bent out of shape – not that you’ll notice it at all once it’s hanging on your wall. I also think that the clock mechanism has probably been replaced, but luckily with a decent quality clock – I left it running for a good few hours and it kept perfect time.

A super handsome and hard-to-come-by wall clock that would make a great statement piece for your bedroom or dining room.

There’s nothing fancy about this retro Westlcox wall clock, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not a fine looking, good quality time piece. The frame of the clock is plastic, as is the clear covering (which is sometimes made from glass), but on the plus side, it’s less likely to break, and you can’t really see that it’s not glass unless you touch it. I love the pale blue case, and the plain font and retro-styled handles make for a very handsome clock. Plus, it has the advantage of being battery operated, so no messy wires running down your wall (often these clock’s have to be plugged in).

Retro Japanese Flip Clock – SOLD

10 Dec

Retro Japanese flip clock

Retro Japanese flip clock

You don’t get much cooler than a retro flip clock – and a Japanese one at that! It was a bit noisy when we first bought it, but Justin gave it a service and now it runs smoothly (he even got the alarm going) and is quiet as a mouse! Unfortunately the plastic casing is quite scratched (not visible in the pics), but that comes with age, and overall it’s still a smart looking time piece that would look fantastic sitting on your desk or bedside cabinet.

Brass Ship Clock – SOLD

5 Dec

Vintage German Observer brass ship clock

Vintage German Observer brass ship clock

I’ve sold all sorts of things over the years, but I think that is probably the first ship’s clock that I’ve had for sale! I wouldn’t have thought that any sort of ship paraphernalia would appeal to me, but I really like this solid brass clock.  Aside from the fact that it’s a very good looking time piece (I love the simplicity of the clock face), it’s also really well constructed and keeps perfect time (those Germans know a thing or two about punctuality!). Sadly the glass is missing from the face and can’t really be replaced – the glass was beveled and the portion that slid into the brass casing was so thin that I think you’d struggle to get a modern day glass factory to produce it (although I suppose it’s worth a shot!). The brass is also buckled in one or two places, and could do with a good polishing – we dipped it in a bicarb & tartaric acid solution (a trick from a jeweler fried of mine!), but it could probably still do with a bit of elbow grease!

A very handsome and fairly collectible clock (they can sell for a pretty penny!) that would look fantastic hanging on your dining room wall!

Dimensions: 7.5cm deep x 22cm in diameter

Price: R350

Small Electric Mantelpiece Clock – SOLD

28 May

Small electric mantlepiece clock

I have Justin to thank for this lovely art deco clock – not only did he give it a service to make sure that it was in tip-top working order, but he also managed to fashion a new winder for it, where the old one had broken off – it may not look that glamorous, but it works perfectly well and is at the back of the clock so is pretty much hidden from sight. Thanks Just!

And I’m absolutely delighted that he managed to get it working well, because it really is quite a lovely looking clock! The alarm function sadly no longer works, but the clock keeps perfect time and is the most beautiful minty green! A few sites say that the clock is made from bakelite, but it looks like ordinary plastic to me, although I could well be wrong.

This is a very handsome time piece that – thanks to Justin – is in great working order!

Electric Wall Clock – SOLD

19 May

Metamec electric wall clock

Metamec electric wall clock

While I really liked the electric wall clock that we had for sale last week, I think that this Metamec version is slightly more attractive, and possibly a more top-end item. For starters, the casing is glass as opposed to clear plastic, so it looks a bit fancier, and then you have the colour – I really like this soft blue – and the fact that it’s a wee bit bigger, but other than that the clocks aren’t that dissimilar. There’s a fair bit of wear to the metal band that runs around the face of the clock (I think it would originally have been a shiny chrome finish), but on the whole it’s a clean piece.

A very handsome wall clock in perfect working order.
