Small Italian Moka Pot – SOLD

22 Oct

Small Pezzetti moka pot

Small Pezzetti moka pot

This little moka pot might not look that exciting, but for me it’s very exciting – I’m always happy when I find good quality Italian espresso cups in near mint condition! And this little guy’s a good make – Pezzetti. I can’t work out if it’s a two or a three cup – it looks so small to me I can’t imagine getting more than a single cup of coffee out of it, but moka pots are measured in espressos, which are pretty tiny cups! I think it’s most likely a three cup, but even if it’s only two espresso servings, an equivalent coffee pot new would cost you in the region of R480!

Dimensions: 16cm tall x 8.5cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R190

Krups Coffee Maker – SOLD

5 Oct

Krups coffee maker

Krups coffee maker

This is definitely one of the more unusual coffee makers that I’ve come across! In fact when I first looked at it I had absolutely no idea how it worked! Where do you pour the water and how on earth does it get into the coffee pot? It turns out that this is a bit of a cross between a drip coffee machine and a stove-top moka pot with the water (which is stored in the metal section underneath the glass coffee pot) being forced up the sides of the coffee maker when the temperature rises and then slowly dripping down into the coffee pot. Some sites date the Krups T8 to the 1960s, but others to the 1970s, and in truth I think it was probably produced over a number of years. In fact despite it being a rather unusual design Krups clearly believe it’s a winner, because in 1997 they reintroduced it with the new and improved version selling for just over £100! Personally I think the earlier machine is much more attractive, but the modern version does have the benefit of having a built-in filter. The older T8 has a round plastic basket which means that you can’t use the standard cone shaped filter, but you can use a flat round filter available from Melitta and for sale online for R250 for 200 filters – enough to last you absolute ages!

An unusual and respected coffee machine that’s not only easy on the eyes, but also makes a damn fine cup of Jo (according to the reviews that I’ve read).

Dimensions: 34cm tall x 19.5cm in diameter (across base)

Price: R320

Pair of Moka Pots – SOLD

21 Sep

Pair of Italian moka pots

Pair of Italian moka pots

These moka pots might not look very smart, but they’re both great quality coffee pots! They’ve got a bit of an industrial look to them, and the metal on these pots never looks that great after a bit of use, but it doesn’t affect how well they’ll brew a pot. The only real issue were the seals which had hardened, but we’ve replaced them with brand new seals so they should be a-ok now!

Note: These moka pots are a size bigger than the moka pots that you normally see for sale. A new Bialetti in this size sells for R890.

Dimensions: 23cm tall x 10cm in diameter

Price: R250 each (Bialetti moka pot SOLD)

Vacuum Coffee Pot – SOLD

14 Sep

Vintage Hario vacuum coffee maker

Vintage Hario vacuum coffee maker

This probably isn’t the best looking coffee pot I’ve ever come across (personally I’m not the biggest fan of the gold detail), but it is in great condition for its years, and the fact that it’s a vacuum coffee maker immediately makes it more interesting! Plus it’s Japanese (always a win) – Hairo first started making coffee pots in 1921 and are still going strong today (Visit their website to see their contemporary coffee pot designs). A vacuum coffee maker works as a syphon: when the bottom pot heats up it changes the vapour pressure and pushes the water up into the upper vessel where the coffee grinds sit; when the water cools down it falls back down into the lower vessel. Click here to watch a vacuum coffee pot in action!

NB: I think that this coffee pot would be safest used on a gas stove.

Dimensions: 24cm tall x 12cm in diameter

Price: R190

Corning Ware Coffee Percolator – SOLD

7 Sep

Corning Ware 6-cup coffee percolator

Corning Ware 6-cup coffee percolator

Designed in 1969, ‘Floral Bouquet’ is probably one of my very favourite Corning Ware pattern! I just love the stylised floral pattern, and the restrained use of colour – such great design! And pair it with a nice clean 6-cup coffee percolator and you have a real winner! The larger Corning Ware coffee pots are always very impressive, but sometimes the smaller ones are a bit more practical.

A classic coffee percolator in near mint condition.

Dimensions: 22cm tall x 13.5cm in diameter (at it widest)

Price: R250

This moka pot was a serious find! Not only is it in near mint condition, but it’s from a classic name in coffee pots – and it’s red! Woohoo! It really does have everything going for it! I’ve come across red moka pots before, but only no-name brands – this is the first top quality red coffee pot that I’ve found. So very exciting!
