Enamel Roasting Dish – SOLD

16 Sep

Vintage enamel roasting dish

Vintage enamel roasting dish

This enamel roasting dish was in rather a sorry state when I found it, and while it’s obviously still pretty beaten looking, I think it’s now clean enough to use. Fortunately most of the wear is to the lid of the dish, although there are also one or two chips on the inside, and the enamel has lost its sheen, which generally makes it harder to clean. So you might wonder why I bought it? But isn’t it obvious? It’s just so lovely! I think it’s the first speckled turquoise roasting dish I’ve ever come across, and I really do love the colour! The dish isn’t quite as heavy as you’d expect for an old piece of enamelware, which in turn probably means that it’s not what you’d call a top quality piece of cookware, but it’s lasted this long (I’d say at least fifty years), so it can’t be that badly made, and now that we’ve given it a good scrub I think it’s got a good few more years life left in it still!

Dimensions: 38cm long x 25.5cm wide x 16cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R250

Dutch Sauce Maker – SOLD

11 Sep

Pyrosil sauce maker

Pyrosil sauce maker

It’s pretty unusual to find one of these Corning Ware ‘sauce makers’ with both its lid and its handle, and even more unusual to find the Dutch version, manufactured by Pyrosil. I have no idea why, but there was a time when Pyrosil (wholly owned by Corning Ware) produced their cookware for the European market. The pieces look virtually identical, with the only real difference being the maker’s mark! But the fact that it’s Dutch and has a bit of a story to it makes it a bit more interesting don’t you think? As if the sauce maker with its lid and its handle wasn’t enough! And it’s in pretty decent nick – there are some scratches from where the handle attaches to the pot (you can use these detachable handles on other Corning Ware pieces – very clever!), and a defect in the glass lid (it’s not actually a chip, it just looks like one), but other than that it’s pretty clean.

Dimensions: Approx. 14cm tall (with lid on) x 18cm in diameter

Price: R240

Enamel Double Boiler – SOLD

11 Sep

Enamel double boiler

Enamel double boiler

I’m pretty sure that I’m never going to own a double boiler (given that the last time I baked was when I was about 12!), but for people who really are into their baking or are serious about their sauces, then double boilers are the business (or so I’m told!). This is a nice classic example and is in reasonably good condition – the inside the bottom pot is a bit worn (unfortunately not visible in the pics), but that’s quite common and won’t affect the functioning of the pot at all. There are also one or two dings in the enamel, and a few scratches to the underside of the bottom pot, but on the whole I’d say it’s in decent nick – good for at least another 1000 cups of hot chocolate (provided you care for it well)!

Dimensions: 21cm tall (with lid on) x 18cm in diameter

Price: R240

Large Corning Ware Dish – SOLD

8 Sep

Large Corning Ware dish

Large Corning Ware dish

These large four quart Corning Ware dishes are pretty hard to come by so I snatch them up whenever I se them, even if they’re not in absolutely mint condition. This ‘Cornflower Blue’ dish, also referred to as a ‘Dutch oven’, has a bit of wear that isn’t that noticeable in the photos – in fact even in real life you can’t really see the wear – you kind of have to feel it. The inside of the pot has become quite matte, so even though it’s clean to look at, it’s likely to stain a bit easier than the same dish which hasn’t lost its sheen. Not that it’s the end of the world – the pot is still completely functional, and as long as you look after it well, it’s sure to last you for years to come!

Dimensions: 31cm long (incl. handles) x 26.5cm wide x 17cm deep (with lid on)

Price: R340

Corning Ware Brownie Dish – SOLD

4 Sep

Corning Ware brownie pan

Corning Ware brownie pan

I’m not really sure what the Corning Ware P-322 was intended to be used for? I see that some people refer to it as a ‘brownie pan’ and others as a ‘cake pan’, so presumably its creator had dessert in mind when he or she came up with this shape! I suppose you can use it for anything really – I can’t, for example, see why you couldn’t do a lasagne or a potato bake in this dish? Then again I’m pretty useless in the kitchen so you probably shouldn’t be listening to me on this one!

NB: This dish has never been used! It came in its original box – sadly its condition was too poor to keep, but the dish itself is immaculate!

Dimensions: 25cm long x 23cm wide x 6.5cm deep

Cast-Iron Gratin Dish – SOLD

31 Aug

Cast-iron gratin dish

Cast-iron gratin dish

There’s no maker’s mark on this cast-iron gratin dish, but it’s pretty much identical to a Le Creuset dish that I sold a year or two back, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was made in the same factory. I love the classic fan-shaped handles and the bright orange enamel finish. There’s a bit of wear to the enamel, but on the whole this dish is nice and clean.

A solidly made piece of cookware that’s going to last you for years to come!

Dimensions: 34cm long (incl. handles) x 20cm wide x 5cm deep
