Vintage Mixing Bowls – SOLD

26 Nov

Vintage mixing bowls

Vintage mixing bowls

I’ve seen a variety of these vintage mixing bowls over the years, butI’ve never seen a set that was made in Romania before! The English versions are identical though and probably date from more or less the same period. This set was made by Nevco, a Romanian pottery house that I’m afraid I know very little about! But for some reason I really like the fact that they’re Romanian – I don’t think I’ve bought any retro Romanian goods before! The bowls, which are much smaller than you’d expect mixing bowls to be (so pay attention to the dimensions!), are in pretty good nick, with the only real signs of wear being some minor crazing.

A lovely set that would make a wonderful addition to any baker’s kitchen.

Dimensions: Large bowl – 10cm tall x 18cm in diameter; Medium bowl – 9cm tall x 15cm in diameter; Small bowl –  7.5cm tall x 13cm diameter

Price: R230 for the set

Drostdy Starter Plates – SOLD

25 Nov

Drostdy starter plates

Drostdy starter plates

How great to find these ‘new-old’ Drostdy plates! I say that they’re ‘new’ stock because a few of them have their original (albeit very worn) labels on them, so I assume they’ve never been used before. Isn’t that pretty cool? The shape is also great – they look like they were made for banana-splits, but they’re actually starter or side plates, intended for whatever you want to serve as appetisers.

An unusual set of side plates with the most beautiful turquoise glaze.

Dimensions: Each plate measures 21cm long x 9cm wide x 2.5cm deep

Price: R160 (set of six)

Note: Mint puts up three new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog (more…)

J&G Meakin Part Coffee Set – SOLD

24 Nov

J&G Meakin part coffee set

J&G Meakin part coffee set

This is the coffee set that belonged to the J&G Meakin side plates that we sold yesterday. I decided to separate the plates from the rest of the set because there are only five cups & saucers, and six side plates. In addition to the missing cup there’s also a hairline crack on the handle of the milk jug, but other than that this set is in excellent condition for its 45-plus years!

A super cool ’60s design that will look wonderful sitting on your kitchen shelf!

Dimensions: Coffee pot – 15cm tall x 12cm in diameter; Milk jug – 9cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 7cm tall x 11cm in diameter; Cups – 8cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter; Saucers -14.5cm in diameter

Price: R280 for the set (13 pieces in total)

Note: Mint puts up three new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog (more…)

J&G Meakin Side Plates – SOLD

J&G Meakin side plates

J&G Meakin side plates

You don’t get more ’60s flower-power than this set of J&G Meakin side plates! I just love that bold pattern, and the pinks that they’ve used in the design are so pretty! The pattern is called ‘Filigree‘ and was designed in 1969. For the most part the plates are in good nick for their years, but there are a few scratches here and there – nothing too serious though.

A lovely set of retro side plates for the next time you have the girls (or boys) over for tea and cake!

Dimensions: Each plate measures 18cm in diameter

Price: R140 for the set of six

Retro TV Snack Plate – SOLD

23 Nov

Retro TV snack plate

Retro TV snack plate

I’ve never come across a plate quite like this before, and going on how fruitless my hunt for something similar online was, I don’t think I’m going to see one anytime in the near future either! For those of us who spent our formative years staring at the TV test pattern waiting for SABC to start broadcasting, this plate has sentimental significance, and for everyone else it’s still a cool plate, with all this crazy blocks of  colour! I have to say, I’m not the biggest fan of the glaze, which is a speckled beige, but given how cool the pattern is I’m willing to overlook it!

A great retro snack plate that’s sure to get your dinner guests talking!

Dimensions: 30cm long x 22cm wide

Price: R130

Scandi Casserole Dish – SOLD

18 Nov

Egersund casserole dish

Egersund casserole dish

This is the first time that I’ve seen the name Egersund on a piece of pottery, but a quick Google search tells me that this is a name that I should so know – these guys came up with some seriously beautiful designs! The Egersund Fayancefabrik played a major role in the development of the town of Egersund during the 130-plus years that it was in operation. The factory finally closed it’s doors in 1979, and I’d guess that this dish dates to sometime around the late 1960s or early ’70s. There are a few marks on the inside of the dish, and on the handles, but for the most part this is a nice clean piece.

Dimensions: 22cm in diameter x 10cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R160
