Vintage Brass Deer – SOLD

4 Nov

Pair of brass deer

Pair of brass deer

We’ve had a few of these brass deer on Mint before, but this is the first pair that we’ve had – for some reason the stooping deer must have been more popular because that’s the only one that I’ve ever seen. Perhaps it has something to do with the startled look on the face of the deer that’s standing up – he does look rather crazy! But together I think they’re quite wonderful!

Dimensions: Standing deer – 18cm tall x 12cm long x 3.5cm wide; Stooping deer – 11cm tall x 12cm long x 3.5cm wide

Price: R140 each / R260 for the pair

Vintage Porcelain Dogs – SOLD

3 Nov

Pair of vintage porcelain dogs

Pair of vintage porcelain dogs

The other day I happened upon quite a large collection of porcelain pups, consisting of some beautifully refined figurines (like this delicate German Shepherd and Greyhound), along with some quite naive examples – I was lucky to arrive just as the dogs were being unpacked so I got to pick and choose! Both of these dogs are fantastic quality and in perfect condition, but my very favourite has to be the Greyhound – they’re such graceful looking creatures in real life, and this beauty translates so well to sculpture. It also doesn’t hurt matters that the Greyhound was made by W. Goebel, a serious name when it comes to porcelain figurines – small porcelain Goebel figurines like this Greyhound can sell for in excess of R1000! But I’m not really being fair to the German Shepherd, who’s equally as lovely! There’s no maker’s mark on the German Shepherd (other than a “Made in Western Germany” stamp), but I suspect that he dates to more or less the same period as the Greyhound, sometime around the 1940s.

A wonderful pair of pups that are refined enough to be on the right side of kitsch!

Dimensions: German Shepherd – 14cm tall x 20cm long x 4cm wide; Greyhound – 9.5cm tall x 19.5cm long x 6cm wide

Prices: German Shepherd – R160; Greyhound – R220

Retro African Bust – SOLD

13 Oct

Retro African bust

Retro African bust

I had to stop myself from skipping when I spotted this African bust the other day! Not only is she really beautiful, but her condition is fantastic compared to most of the busts that you see in this style. Not that she’s in mint condition – she does have the odd chip here and there, but her colours are nice and bright, and on the whole the paintwork is pretty fresh. Her condition might have something to do with the material that she’s made from – when I picked her up I was surprised at how light she was! At first I thought that she might be made from plastic, but looking at the small chips it seems that she is made from a plaster of sorts, but I’m not sure exactly what type? Not that it matters too much I suppose – what counts is that she’s in great condition, is wonderful to look at, and fairly unusual – you really don’t see these busts every day!

Dimensions: 23cm tall x 14.5cm wide x 10cm deep (across base)

Price: R360

Pair of Turquoise Foo Dogs – SOLD

23 Sep

Turquoise foo dogs

Turquoise foo dogs

I’ve always been attracted to these Chinese foo dogs, but this is the first time that I’ve managed to lay my hands on a pair. After reading up a bit on these unusual pups, it turns out that they’re actually lions, not canines: traditionally these statues stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces, tombs, temples, and the homes of the wealthy, and were thought to offer protection. The lions are normally shown in pairs, with the male leaning his paw on an embroidered ball (representing supremacy over the world) and the female restraining a playful cub (representing nurture). Sadly my male lion has been repaired, but the damage is barely noticeable – in fact I only saw that the head had been glued when we were busy washing him (see pics under ‘more’). Once you notice the damage it’s fairly easy to see, but it really doesn’t shout out at you, and I’m pretty confident that when you have the lions on display nobody will notice that anything’s amiss!

P.S. There are countless variations of these dogs for sale, but a single dog identical to this pair normally sells for around $70 (R950) online.

Dimensions: Each dog measures 30cm tall x 8.5cm wide x 6.5cm deep

Price: R350 for the pair

Vintage Porcelain Bunny – SOLD

2 Sep

Porcelain rabbit

Porcelain rabbit

I really wish I could make out the maker’s mark on the base of this porcelain bunny because I’m fairly certain that it’s a name worth reading – there’s a delicateness to this little rabbit that you just don’t see everyday! I love the detail of the painted eyes, and the long ears and rather serious expression – this bunny means business! Sadly there are two small chips at the end of the rabbit’s ears, but they’re barely noticeable, and other than that this little guy’s in pretty decent nick.

Dimensions: 11cm tall x 11cm long x 5cm wide

Price: R140

Lucia Ware Deer – SOLD

24 Aug

Lucia Ware deer

Lucia Ware deer

This is only the second time I’ve seen one of these stooping deer. The first time was when I sold those lovely yellow deer a month or two back, but they didn’t have a maker’s mark, so while they looked very much like Lucia, I couldn’t say for certain – but now I can! I haven’t photographed it, but on the underside of the little deer is the Lucia mark (yay!). And of course the taller, standing deer is the Lucia deer that we all know and love! Bizarrely there’s a foil Lucia sticker on the side of the deer. I’ve left it there because that’s where I found it, but I’m pretty sure it should be underneath the deer, sp perhaps whoever buys it can just remove it or re-stick it somewhere less obtrusive!

Dimensions: Standing deer – 15.5cm tall; Stooping deer – 15.5cm tall

Price: Standing deer – R120; Stooping deer – R110
