Tabletop Filing Drawers – SOLD

11 Dec

Vintage tabletop metal filing drawers

Vintage tabletop metal filing drawers

This is one of the most delightful set of tabletop filing drawers that I’ve come across! It’s not in perfect condition (the photos probably make it look a bit cleaner than it really is – the light was a bit crazy when I took the pics), but it’s not in terrible nick either, and on the plus side it has those great little legs and that very sweet paper top! I’m pretty sure that someone’s added the legs on after the fact, but they work pretty well, and the patterned paper is definitely a home-made add-on, but I love it!

The perfect gift for any crafter or DIY friends – you can stash all sorts of bits and bobs in those neat little drawers!

Dimensions: 46cm tall x 37.5cm deep x 26.5cm wide

Prices: R390

Retro Kiaat and Leather Armchair – SOLD

10 Dec

John Tabraham leather & kiaat armchair

John Tabraham leather & kiaat armchair

This is definitely one of the more expensive armchairs that I’ve bought, and while some people are going to think I’m crazy for paying the price that I did, but for me it was love at first sight! Despite the leather being quite worn, especially on the back straps, there was something about this chair that just shouted out to me. Designed by John  Tabraham for South African furniture makers, Kallenbach, the armchair has a definite retro aesthetic, with its low slung back and beautiful kiaat wooden frame. The leather could possibly do with being replaced at some point in the future, but for the time being I’ve just given it a really good polish, and provided that it’s well cared for, I think it’s probably good for a few more years.

A super stylish (and seriously comfortable)  armchair that will look absolutely fantastic in the right home!

Dimensions: 69cm tall x 77cm wide x 69cm deep

Price: R2950

Retro Magazine Rack – SOLD

4 Dec

Retro metal magazine rack

Retro metal magazine rack

This magazine rack isn’t in what you’d call mint condition, but it’s not doing too badly either given that it probably dates to the early 1960s. The paintwork is a bit scuffed, as are the red plastic feet, but it’s still a very striking design, and given its good looks I don’t think that you’ll really notice the wear too much! I love that great big swirl that forms the handle, an the combination of the black and brass adds a bit of interest to a piece that’s already quite eye-catching!

Dimensions: 43cm long x 29cm wide x 49cm tall

Vintage Metal Hospital Bed – SOLD

27 Nov

Vintage metal hospital bed

Vintage metal hospital bed

I think that this is probably the first time that I’ve bought a bed. I’ve bought a few headboards, but never an actual bed! The thing that appealed to me about this bed was the fact that it’s metal – you really don’t see these metal bed frames that often. And I love the fact that it’s been painted red, but obviously a very long time ago – the paint’s very chipped, but that only adds to the charm of the piece. The ‘base’ of the bed is made of metal slats, which have slumped a bit over the years (from what I’ve read this bed dates to the early 1900s!), but if you put a high density foam mattress on it, it should be comfy enough. It’s never going to be a Tempur, but it’d be perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon doze on your verandah!

NB: The bed is narrower than a standard single bed, so you’d need to get a piece of foam cut for the bed.

Dimensions: 187cm long x 75cm wide x 83cm tall

Price: R1600 (excl. mattress)

Retro Wood and Vinyl Armchairs – SOLD

16 Nov

John Tabraham wood & vinyl armchairs

John Tabraham wood & vinyl armchairs

I’m pretty sure that these retro wooden armchairs were originally intended for an office environment, in fact I bought them from a retired lawyer, but that doesn’t mean that they would’t work just as well at home. I love the style of the chairs – a side view shows the influence of Scandinavian design that South African furniture maker, John Tabraham, was so taken with in the 1950s and ’60s. We’ve sanded and varnished the wood to give it a new lease on life, but have left the original vinyl as is. There are a few tears in the vinyl, but personally I don’t think the damage isn’t bad enough to warrant new upholstery. For the time being at least I’d leave them as is, although perhaps down the line a softer fabric might make them a bit more home-friendly?

Dimensions: Each chair measures 80cm tall x 57.5cm wide x 54cm deep

Price: R850 each

Large Refurbished Ottoman – SOLD

10 Nov

Large refurbished ottoman

Large refurbished ottoman

I have to say, I’m quite happy with how this ottoman turned out! When I bought it the wooden base was really dark from years worth of old varnish, the cushion was rather saggy, and the brown corduroy had definitely seen better days! But with some new foam, a rather zany fabric, and some fresh varnish it looks almost brand spanking new – but is of course much better made than most modern furniture!

It needs a bit of space (it’s not small), but if you have the room this ottoman will provide some stylish extra seating for when you have guests round, or act as great foot rest for when it’s just you and your partner watching telly.

Dimensions: 75cm wide x 75cm long x 37cm tall
