Danish Scan-globe – SOLD

19 Nov

Danish Scan-Globe

Danish Scan-Globe

Can you believe I found another Scan-Globe?! After years of hunting for one I managed to find two in the space of a month! Woohoo! This one’s quite different to the one that I sold earlier this month – it doesn’t have the pointer and the longitude and latitude dial, but in a way I prefer the design – it’s slightly less bulky. It’s also in better nick, with the only real wear being a bit of corrosion to the metal frame. And of course it lights up making it the coolest globe you can buy!

P.S. Click here to see what the globe looks like lit up!

Dimensions: 40cm tall x 30cm in diameter

Price: R580

Vintage Hot Water Bottle – SOLD

16 Nov

Vintage Noah's Ark hot water bottle

Vintage Noah’s Ark hot water bottle

I know it’s the wrong time of the year to be selling a hot water bottle, especially with the heat wave that we’ve been having in Joburg, but I just couldn’t wait until winter to show off this crazy hot water bottle! Isn’t he just so wonderful!! he’s made of a thick textured rubber by Noah’s Ark, Singapore, and I’d guess that he dates to around the 1950s. Noah’s Ark made an assortment of these animal hot water bottles, with each of them just as kitsch as the next – think blue bunnies and French poodles with red bow ties! So cool!

Note: There’s some minor wear here and there, but the rubber appears to be intact.

Dimensions: 35cm tall x 17cm wide

Price: R150

Danish Scan-globe – SOLD

3 Nov

Vintage Scanglobe

Vintage Scanglobe

It’s not often that I struggle to part with things, but I’ve been hunting one of these Scan-globes for about two years now, so this really is a reticent sale! I first discovered the miracle of the Scan-globe when a friend of mine bought one – when I spotted it I thought “cool globe”, but when I found out that it lit up (yes, it has a light inside!!) I was completely green with envy! So when a dealer approached me the other day asking a pretty heavy price for this globe I didn’t hesitate for a second – it just had to be mine! But then I got it home and looked at the Reader’s Digest globe that my father gave me a few years ago and I realised that I could never part with it, and given that you can’t really have two globes in one house I knew that I’d have to sell it. Of course I played with it for a few weeks before I had to part with it, so I’ve discovered just how great it is! It has a crack along its base (fortunately not very noticeable), but the light works just fine as does the pointer – turn the dial to longitude first and then move the dial for latitude – a small spotlight will point to the position you have chosen! And in addition to the wonderful educational element, this globe would make the most awesome night light for your kid’s bedroom – that’s if you can bear to part with it…..

Backgammon Set – SOLD

23 Oct

Backgammon set

Backgammon set

It’s been quite a while since we had a backgammon set for sale, so I was very happy to find this set the other day! It’s a bit strange in that it doesn’t have compartments for the pieces (there’s normally a space on either side of the board where you can stack all your ‘men’), but I suppose it’s not the end of the world if they lie loose in the case? The important thing is that the set is complete and that with the exception of a bit of wear to the metal clasp, and a bit of dust on the felt (it could maybe do with a vacuum!) it’s in pretty decent nick!

Dimensions: Case measures 36.5cm long x 20cm wide x 4.5cm deep

Price: R140

Chinese ‘Paper Dolls’ – SOLD

22 Oct

Chinese 'paper dolls'

Chinese ‘paper dolls’

I’ve called these little men and women ‘paper dolls’, but in truth they’re mostly made from fabric, with little features made from paper – I’m just not sure what else they would be called? They look like they’re designed to be hung, but I’m not sure if they’re meant for kids or adults? The box (which is a bit worse for wear) is quite grown-up? Personally though I think that they would work best hung on a wall in a child’s room, or otherwise framed and hung wherever you want – framing would also help reserve them as they’re quite fragile.

Dimensions: Each doll measures approx. 22cm tall x 6cm wide

Price: R140 for the set

Donald Duck Night Light – SOLD

16 Sep

Donald Duck night lamp

Donald Duck night lamp

How cool is this Donald Duck night light?! I just love him! I’ve had a few of these Disney character lamps over the years, but this little guy is probably the neatest lamp I’ve ever had – in fact I’m not sure that he’s ever been used? There’s a sticker on the base of the lamp where you open it up to change the bulb, and it looks like the sticker’s never been moved, so my guess is the lamp’s hasn’t even been turned on. I might be wrong, but either way old Donald’s still in great nick! There’s some yellow missing from his beak, but that looks more like a manufacturing defect to me than actual wear & tear.

A wonderfully quirky nightlight that will hopefully ease your little boy or girl off to sleep – although I’ve seen these lamps turned on and they look kind of mad, so don’t blame me if your kid complains of being chased by a crazed Donald Duck in his dreams!

Dimensions: 17cm tall x 10cm wide

Price: R220
