Glass Ice Bucket – SOLD

10 Oct

Vintage glass ice bucket

Vintage glass ice bucket

This is probably one of the most special ice buckets that I’ve ever been lucky enough to come across! It may look rather plain, but just the fact that it’s glass, and red glass nonetheless, means that it’s pretty unique. And then you have the fact that the glass is ‘dimpled’ – it looks like somebody has taken the base and squeezed it on all four sides. And I love the stainless steel handle, it adds a great sleekness to the glass and finishes it off perfectly.

The ice bucket was sold to me as Murano glass, but it could just as easily be Scandinavian or Italian. Truth be told I have no idea of its provenance, but I know that it’s a serious piece of quality glass with great style!

NB: Pay attention to the dimensions below – this is a small ice bucket.

Dimensions: 20cm tall (incl. the handle) x 11cm in diameter (at their widest)

Price: R260

Ice Bucket and Hot Choc Pot – SOLD

18 Sep

Vintage ice bucket & hot chocolate pot

Vintage ice bucket & hot chocolate pot

I’m not really certain what makes this a hot chocolate pot, but it was sold to me as one, and when I researched it online its seems that that’s exactly what it is. It’s not designed to go on the stove, so presumably you boil your milk first and then add the chocolate and the milk to this pot. I suppose it’s just an elegant way of serving hot chocolate – harking back to the days when people were actually served (very Downton Abbey-esque!). The ice bucket is also a delightful piece (I love the ball and claw feet!), but  the silver plating is a bit marked in places which doesn’t show up that well in the photos. It’s also not a massive ice bucket, so if you’re throwing a serious bash (versus a polite dinner party) then this probably isn’t the bucket for you!

Dimensions: Ice bucket – 16cm tall x 13cm in diameter (at its widest); Hot chocolate pot – 20cm tall x 13.5cm in diameter

Price: Ice bucket – R130; Hot chocolate pot – R210

Retro Guzzini Ice Bucket – SOLD

9 Jul

Retro Guzzini ice bucket

Retro Guzzini ‘Amanda’ ice bucket

Another retro ice bucket – I think that this is my fourth one in the past two weeks! But while the other ice buckets I featured were kind of retro kitsch, this Italian ice bucket from Guzzini is more on the stylish side. And aside from being rather good looking it’s also nice and practical – it has a white plastic lining that sits inside the clear lucite case and can be removed for easy cleaning. There’re some scratches on the handle where it looks like someone’s tried to remove a label, but otherwise this 1970s design classic is in pretty good nick!

Dimensions: 17cm tall x 16cm wide

Price: R130

Pair of Retro Ice Buckets – SOLD

Pair of retro ice buckets

Pair of retro ice buckets

I swear we had this exact car ice bucket growing up, which means that it most likely dates to the mid-70s, which is probably more or less when the yellow ice bucket was also produced. Both of them have a bit of wear – the chrome band around the yellow ice bucket is quite corroded in places, as is the lid on the car ice bucket – but I don’t think they’re doing too badly for their years: I have way more signs of age and I think I’m probably a few years younger! One kitsch and one cool ice bucket, but whichever you pick they’ll do a great job of chilling your ice for your whiskey and soda, or whatever tipple tickles your fancy this winter.

Dimensions: each ice bucket measures approx. 18cm tall x 14cm in diameter

Price: R95 each

Retro Apple Ice Bucket – SOLD

27 Jun

Retro apple ice bucket

Retro apple ice bucket

This anodised apple ice bucket has seen better days – but what glorious days they must have been! While it has its fair share of dents and scratches, and is definitely no longer in its prime, you can just see how crazy cool this ice bucket was in its day! And I have it on good authority that it was put to excellent use and saw plenty of cocktail parties! It was made in Australia, presumably sometime during the 1960s, and while at first glance it’s quite similar to other apple shaped ice buckets, it’s definitely a step or two above your average ice bucket. For starters it has “A Daydream Production” stamped on its base – any ice bucket with those words embossed on it has to be cool! Then you have the fact that it’s made of metal as opposed to the more common plastic variety, and that it has a lid within a lid to make sure your ice stays nice and cold. This has to be one of the best ice buckets I’ve seen in a long time, and to be honest if it was in better nick I’d be selling it for a small fortune (there’s one selling on ebay for a whopping 100 Aussie Dollars), but it is in a bit of a sad state so the price reflects that.

An uber cool bit of retro design that will look amazing in any home!

Dimensions: 20cm tall x 20cm in diameter

Price: R140

Pair of Apple Ice Buckets – SOLD

Pair of plastic apple ice buckets

Pair of plastic apple ice buckets

These plastic apple ice buckets are terribly tacky, but they’re also great fun! And even though they’re pretty cheaply made they’ll still make quite an impact sitting on your kitchen shelf or drinks’ trolley. Plus they’ll definitely elicit a comment or two at your next party – people will love helping themselves to ice from your cheesy apple!

Note: The plastic is a bit scratched/dull from use, which isn’t visible in the pics.

Dimensions: Each apples measures 24m tall (incl. stem) x 18cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R80 each
