Vintage Green Kitchen Jars – SOLD

Depression-era green glass kitchen jars

Depression-era green glass kitchen jars

I really think these might be the most special kitchen jars I’ve ever been lucky enough to find! I really don’t think I’ve seen a set quite like these before, and having hunted for them online there don’t seem to be any other matching jars out there (although if I’d spent a little longer looking I’m sure I would have eventually found something similar – the wonders of the interweb never cease to amaze me!). Going on the style of the jars, I’d guess that they’re what is referred to as ‘depression-era glass’ and date to sometime around the early 1940s. Because of their age there is a bit of wear and tear, with the most notable damage being a chip to one of the smaller jars. The rest of the set has a few fleabite chips, and some scratches here and there, although nothing too serious. The small jars are quite petite and look like they would have originally been used to store spices, although you could also use them for tea and sugar, you’d just need to refill them more often. The larger jars are a bit big for teabags, and probably a bit small for something like flour, but really you could use them to store whatever you like – it’s just a matter of personal preference. Whatever you choose to us them for I know that they’ll look amazing – I had to stop myself from doing a hop and skip when I spotted them for sale, they were so darn good looking!

Large vintage kitchen jars

These large vintage kitchen jars are part of the big haul that I found a few weeks ago. They’re in just as good a nick as the first lot of jars we sold (if not slightly better), and are exactly the same size. They’re the perfect jars for those oversized boxes of cereal, or would be great for storing dry goods like flour or rice.

Dimensions: Each jar measures 24.5m tall x 15cm in diameter

Price: R150 each

Note: Mint puts up three new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog (more…)

Large Kitchen Jars – SOLD

Large vintage kitchen jars

I seem to be on a bit of a roll lately with these vintage kitchen jars! I don’t normally see them that often, but this is the second time since I’ve moved to Jozi that I’ve come a cross a stash of them, and this time they’re the large jars, which is super exciting! And on top of the fact that I’ve found so many of them, and that these guys are nice and large, they’re also in pretty decent nick – the lids are often quite badly corroded, and while one of the lids here has a few dodgy spots, I know that it will still keep your cereal or rice nice and dry – the jar that I store my All Bran in has a few peep holes just like this lid, and I’ve never had any issues with my cereal going soggy!

Dimensions: Each jar measures 24.5m tall x 15cm in diameter

Price: R150 each

Vintage Kitchen Jars – SOLD

Collection of vintage kitchen jars

Collection of vintage kitchen jars

This is the mother load of jars! They came from the same home as the last few lot of jars that we’ve had – this was a lady who liked to cook and had loads of spices and rices and pastas and all sorts stored in all sorts of jars! Some of the lids are a bit worn, and one lid in particular is quite badly scratched. That being said I have quite a few jars with very sad lids, and at the end of the day you don’t really notice the wear.

Dimensions: Each jar measure 18cm tall x 12cm wide x 9cm deep

Price: R120 each

Vintage Portmeirion Jar – SOLD

7 Oct

Vintage Portmeirion jar

Vintage Portmeirion jar

This Portmeirion jar obviously belongs to the same set as the beakers that we featured yesterday, but luckily this time we have the lid! Like the pieces from yesterday, this jar is in fantastic condition, and even has the rubber seal that wraps around the lid and secures it to the jar. The pattern is part of a series called ‘Birds of Britain’ that was first introduced in 1974, but going on the maker’s mark I’d guess that this particular jar was made sometime during the ’80s.

A nice piece of good quality pottery that’s sure to come in handy, whether you use it in the kitchen to store biscuits or in the bathroom to store cottonwool and odds and ends.

Dimensions: 12cm tall x 12.5cm in diameter

Price: R120

Small Presto Kitchen Jars – SOLD

Presto kitchen jars

Presto kitchen jars

I’ve sold all sorts of kitchen jars over the years, but I think these are the first Presto canning jars that I’ve come across. I  love how squat they are, and they metal lids with the inscription “Tested & approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute” are just fantastic! Because they have a two part lid (glass insert with metal cover) they’re not quite as practical as some of the other kitchen jars that we sell, but I think the hassle’s worth it for such a handsome pair!

Dimensions: Each jar measures 9.5cm tall x 9.5cm wide

Price: R110 each
