Large Apothecary-Style Glass Jar – SOLD

Large apothecary-style jar

Again this is a piece that I don’t think has any age to it – it’s obviously modelled on an old-school apothecary jar, but there’s no real wear, suggesting that it’s modern. But it’s still really lovely! It’s nice and large so makes a serious impact – I know it’s a very American thing to do (and not very health conscious), but think how great it would look filled with a whole lot of coloured candy! When we were kids we went to visit a friend of my dad’s in Los Angeles and he had a giant dish like this filled to the brim with jelly beans – it clearly made an impact on me because I’ve never forgotten it! But if you don’t want your whole family to land up at Weighless you could also use the jar for decorative purposes – doesn’t it look lovely filled with shells (which by the way are a fantastic collection – some lovely cowrie shells and a nice piece of coral). Or for cottonwool or soaps in your bathroom? It needs a bit of space, but in the right bathroom it could look quite wonderful!

Dimensions: 35cm tall x 22cm in diameter

Price: R200 for the jar – SOLD/R100 for the shells

Vintage Kitchen Jars – SOLD

Vintage kitchen jars

I bought this set of kitchen jars from the same home as the Ball jars that we featured last week – these are the green lids that they were trying to match when they painted the zinc lids. These jars are in reasonably good nick – a few of the lids are a bit scratched, but not too badly, and the glass is in near perfect nick! These jars are a great size – they’re one-up from the smallest size and can be used for everything from rice and lentils to sugar and small bags of muesli.

Dimensions: Each jar measures 18cm tall x 12cm wide x 10cm deep

Price: R120 each

Vintage Ball Kitchen Jars – SOLD

Ball kitchen jars

When I bought these vintage Ball jars the lids were painted a bluey-green to match the other jars that the lady had in her kitchen. I was a bit concerned that we wouldn’t manage to get the paint off (they really didn’t look great blue!), but luckily we did and the lids are now squeaky clean (or as clean as vintage zinc lids are ever going to look!). And on top of that the white glass lid liners are still intact, and the glass jars themselves seem to be in perfect nick!

Dimensions: Each jar measures 18cm tall x 9cm in diameter

Price: R130 each

Vintage Kitchen Jars – SOLD

I always consider myself very lucky when I find these vintage kitchen jars, and even luckier when they’re in such good nick! The lid on the smaller jar is probably the worse off of the two, but compared to my own jars that I have in my kitchen, these ones are pretty darn clean! The large jar would be great for cereal – it should take one of those jumbo boxes of cereal, and the smaller jar for tea or sugar, or possibly a small bag of muesli.

Dimensions: Large jar – 23m tall x 15cm in diameter; Medium jar – 18cm tall x 12cm wide x 9cm deep

Price: Large jar – R150; Medium jar – R120

Vintage Glas Jars – SOLD

Vintage glass jars

Vintage glass jars

I paid a king’s ransom for this vintage green kitchen jar, but I don’t come across them very often, and I’ve never seen one this large (this is kind of the size for a packet of flour, whereas they’re normally better suited for storing tea and sugar) – plus the green glass is just beautiful!! The lid’s obviously quite badly worn, but it still screws on perfectly well, and a bit of wear’s to be expected with something this old. The milk glass jar’s just a bit of fun really –  I’m not sure it’s big enough to store any kitchen goods (it’s about the size you’d expect for a jar of honey?), but it’s so sweet with the little faded tulips, and I’m sure you could find some use for it – I’m always looking for jars to keep different bits of stationery and other odds and ends in!

Dimensions: Green jar – 20.5cm tall x 14cm wide x 12.5cm deep; Milk glass jar – 11cm tall x 9cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: Green jar – R200; Milk glass jar – R65

Ribbed Glass Water Bottle – SOLD

21 Aug

Large ribbed glass water bottle

Large ribbed glass water bottle

It may seem like a silly thing to get excited about, but this vintage water bottle really made my day when I found it! I just love these old fridge bottles, and they’re really not that easy to come by. I have three of them, but all of mine have damaged lids (I use them for bubble bath, so it doesn’t really matter that the lids are cracked). Not only is this bottle in excellent condition, but it’s also the largest version that I’ve ever seen! It’s only marginally bigger (about 2cm tall and 3cm wider), but the fact that I’ve never seen this size makes it extra, extra special!

Dimensions: 25cm tall x 15cm wide x 8cm deep

Price: R140
