German Kitchen Scale – SOLD

German Soehnle kitchen scale

German Soehnle kitchen scale

Soehnle is a German brand of kitchen scales that first opened their doors in 1868 and are still going strong today! The Reform balance scale was designed in 1937, but proved such a popular model that it remains in production today. Looking at the packaging that this scale came in I’d guess that this particular Reform model dates to the late 1970s or early ’80s. I had to throw the box away, but have held into the instruction leaflet, which is probably a good thing as I’ve never really been able to get my head around how these scales work! The scale seems to be in completely original condition – in fact I don’t think that anyone’s ever used it!

A great looking kitchen scale from a very respected German brand.

Dimensions: 30cm wide x 17cm deep x 10.5cm tall

Vintage Kitchen Scale – SOLD

Vintage West-German kitchen scale

Vintage West-German kitchen scale

This vintage German kitchen scale is in much better nick than most of the scales I come across. There’s a small crack in the plastic cover, but other than that it’s a very clean piece! There are very few vintage scales that I don’t like, but this particular West German design by Stube is one of my favourites – and of course I love the orange enamel!

Note: The scale seems to be in good working order, but I’ll happily take it back if there are any issues.

Dimensions: 23cm wide x 8.5cm deep x 22cm tall

Price: R200

Retro Kitchen Scale – SOLD

14 May

Retro EKS kitchen scale

Retro EKS kitchen scale

This 1960s kitchen scale by Swedish company, EKS, was a real find! It’s in absolutely mint condition, having never been used before. I bought it from a deceased estate where clearly the departed had a bit of a hoarding problem – I think we counted five vacuum cleaners still in their original boxes (I can only assume that she had a friend who worked for Hoover!). But I’m not complaining because it’s so rare to find a kitchen scale in this type of condition – normally they’re covered in grease, or missing half their paint, or both! But this one looks brand-spanking new – whoop! And in addition to being in great nick, it’s a quality scale made by a company that still produces kitchen scales some 70 years after they started.

A super handsome scale that will look fantastic sitting on your kitchen counter.

Dimensions: 30cm wide x 17cm deep x 9.5cm tall

Price: R280

Vintage Salter Scale – SOLD

Vintage Salter kitchen scale

Vintage Salter kitchen scale

The person who sold me this vintage Salter scale seemed to think that it was fairly accurate, but I weighed a tin of tuna with it yesterday and unless my maths is really out (I was converting ounces to grams) I don’t think that I’d be using it for baking anytime soon! But I don’t really mind the fact that it doesn’t work – although it would be really nice if it did – because I mostly bought it for the way that it looks. That 2D scale ‘face’ really appeals to me for some reason, and I don’t even mind the fact that it’s so worn looking. It’s not something that would really go with my decor, but it would look great in the right setting. I’m thinking something like a health or fruit and veggie store, but I’d even go so far as to say that it would work in a modern kitchen, provided it was a very clean space.

A character-filled bit of vintage kitchenalia that will add a bit of charm to your home.

Dimensions: 31cm tall x 19cm wide x 7cm deep

Price: R250

Retro Kitchen Scale – SOLD

Retro Stube kitchen scale

Retro Stube kitchen scale

I haven’t had the best of luck with scales – I tend get all excited when I spot one, run out the shop with it (after paying of course), only to get home and discover that it’s not actually working properly – it’s happened to me more than once. So I took a bit of time with this one, using it to weigh something before I bought it, and it seems to be working just fine! What’s nice about it – other than its obvious good looks – is that it’s in kilos. More often than not these vintage scales are in pounds, which although handy for some recipes, doesn’t make that much sense when you live in SA. On the downside though, there is a bit of rust on the body of the scale, but luckily most of the wear is under the tray so isn’t as obvious as it could be.

This is a very handsome and practical kitchen accessory that should keep going for years to come, provided you care for it well.

Dimensions: 23cm wide x 8.5cm deep x 22cm tall

Salter Wall Scale – SOLD

22 Oct

Salter wall scale

Salter wall scale

The blue cover on this retro Salter wall scale is a bit scratched, but the damage isn’t terribly noticeable – I’d still hang it on my kitchen wall. We have an orange version of this scale in Justin’s flat (not that we did any baking there!) and it looks great hanging on the wall, plus it’s a bit of a party-trick when you open it up to show visitors how it works! The idea is that the scale hangs on your wall (closed) as a permanent fixture, and you open it up when you want to use it: just plonk your flour in the ‘cover’ of the scale and then when you have the right weight, un-clip the cover and pour the flour into your mixing bowl; rinse the cover after you’ve used it and clip it back onto the scale and you’re all done! Voila!

NB: The scale is in pounds not kilos.

P.S. Have a look at the last pic below – you can see the orange scale from Justin’s flat in the left hand side pic of the kitchen. Looks cool, doesn’t it?!

Dimensions: 22cm wide x 22cm long x 5.5cm deep (dimensions when closed)

Price: R130
