Vintage Kitchen Scale – SOLD

Vintage Tower scale

Vintage Tower scale

Even if you’re not the biggest fan of vintage kitchenalia, I’m sure you’ll agree that there’s something very appealing about old kitchen scales! Especially when they’re a rustic red, and the famous Tower brand! Unusually (and luckily for us!) the metal tray is in relatively good nick – nearly always these ‘stainless’ steel trays are very corroded. On the downside though, the scale is in pounds, which isn’t that useful in SA, and a further problem is that it doesn’t seem to be 100% accurate (when you convert the measurement into grams), which is a bit of a problem if you’re going to be using it for baking. But if you’re after a great looking kitchen prop, or something for cooking (as opposed to baking) then this old scale will work a treat!

Dimensions: 22cm tall x 22cm long x 16cm wide (width of tray)

Vintage Harper Kitchen Scale – SOLD

Vintage Harper kitchen scale

Vintage Harper kitchen scale

They may not be the most practical items these days, but there’s something very cool about vintage kitchen scales! And while the weights make them even more antiquated, they also make them that much more interesting – something about playing with blocks as a child that strikes a chord here! For its age this Harper scale isn’t doing too badly: it still has all of its original weights, and while the paintwork has seen better days, for the most part it’s in reasonably good nick. I’ve never quite worked out how you use the weights for baking (I wouldn’t have thought that they were accurate enough), but if you are a baker and have a bit of know how this could be the scale for you! Not only will it add a bit of interest to your kitchen decor, but your friends will be super impressed when you tell them that you baked those delicious pound cakes using this most modern of kitchen accessories!

Dimensions: Base -25cm long x 9cm wide x 15cm at its highest; Bowl – 16cm wide x 23cm long

Retro Salter Scale – SOLD

Retro Salter kitchen scale

Retro Salter kitchen scale

I have to say I don’t think my rather shoddy photos do justice to this lovely Salter kitchen scale – I didn’t realise quite how blurry my pics were until I had uploaded them! The photos give an accurate depiction of the olive green base of the scale, but they make the plastic beige bowl seem  much whiter than it actually is. I suspect that it was white at some point, but the plastic has yellowed with age. You also can’t see the wear and tear to the face of the scale – bits of the face have peeled away, but the writing is still legible and the wear isn’t offensive at all. I love the unusual shape of the bowl which is pointed forward to create a pouring spout. I also really like the retro shape of the scale itself – nice and chunky, but with great style. Another plus is the fact that the scale measures in pounds and kilos, so no need for conversion charts, plus it seems to be pretty accurate, which is very important for baking (or so I’m told!). A handsome piece that will serve you well in the kitchen!

Vintage Krups Scale – SOLD

26 Sep

Vintage Krups scale

Vintage Krups scale

I think that this vintage Krups scale is probably going to be more of a decorative piece than a functional kitchen accessory – while it seems to be in good working order (despite how it may look!), the measurements are in pounds not grams or kilos, so it’s probably not that practical. That being said a lot of recipes do call for pounds and ounces, so it might come in handy now and again (no need to use that conversion app on your phone!). The paintwork is more than a little worse for wear, but it is what it is. I think that a bit of rust and peeling paint on this style of kitchen scale almost looks right – it would look most peculiar if it was in mint condition, and with the number of retro  knock-offs  around these days, a bit of wear and tear adds a certain credibility to a piece. An old-school scale with great style that deserves a second chance at life!

Kitchen Scale – SOLD

28 Jun

Soehnle kitchen scale

Soehnle kitchen scale

There’s nothing spectacular about this kitchen scale, but you’d be amazed at how hard it is to find older scales in decent nick! They’re invariably missing their trays or have stopped weighing accurately, so when I spot a working scale that’s got a bit of style I jump at the chance to buy it! This Soehnle scale (Germany) has seen a fair bit of use. The plastic face of the scale is a bit murky from being scratched, and the corners of the tray are slightly stained, but there’s no serious damage and the overall impression is fairly clean. My main reason for buying it was the combination of colours: the orange, black and white look great together! I also like the simplicity of the design – the sharp lines and the bold colours make for a plain, but strong design. A practical, functional piece that will look great in a modern kitchen.

Dimensions: 23cm tall x 13.5cm wide x 13.5cm deep

Tower Kitchen Scale – SOLD

14 Jun

Tower kitchen scale

Tower kitchen scale

The plastic cover on this scale has gone a bit milky with age and the paint work is corroded in areas, but really who cares – it’s a yellow kitchen scale! Can you tell I’m a fan of the colour? I’ve sold a few of these Tower scales over the years, and they’re always quite bold colours, but I’ve never seen a yellow one before. Super exciting! And it works, and it’s in kilos. All good news! I’m a little envious of whoever gets to take this one home with them!
