Retro Melamine Part Dinner Service – SOLD

7 Dec

Retro Eileen melamine part-dinner service

Retro Eileen melamine part-dinner service

While most of us think of plastic crockery as being best suited for camping, there was a time in the 1950s when it nearly overtook conventional ceramics in people’s kitchens, but by the late ’60s things had returned to normal, and melamine designs became more targeted for the outdoor market. But because of this melamine craze in the ’50s, you see these beautiful sets of melamine dinner services that were clearly designed for more than just camping trips! Just look at the beautiful detail on the cup handles – way too pretty for a caravan holiday! That being said if you are into the outdoors why shouldn’t you drink your tea out of a pretty cup? The bowls and plates would also be great for families with young kids – while melamine can break, it’s still way more hardy than traditional crockery!

Note: The set is in decent condition of its years, but the plates do have some fine scratches that are visible if you’re looking for them, and someone (not me!) has scratched the centres of the plates and bowls trying to remove old price stickers.

Dimensions: Dinner plates – 25.5cm in diameter; Bowls – 4cm deep x 13.5cm in diameter; Cups – 7cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Saucers – 15cm in diameter

Price: R295 for the set (16 pieces in total)

Vintage ridged water bottle

I think this is the nicest of the vintage water bottles I’ve ever come across! It’s the same great design, but is in absolutely mint condition! The lining on the inside of the cap is even intact! I have a few of these bottles at home – I use one for keeping water cold in the fridge and a few more for decanting bubble bath into – the pearly bubbles look so pretty in the ridged glass!

Mache’s House to Rent!

24 Nov

Pete's lounge

Pete’s lounge

My brother, Pete (aka Mache!), is busy exploring Berlin so is renting out his rather mad and wonderful house! Read his story below and email me or Pete if you’re interested…..

My beautiful house in Durban is available to rent from 1 December, fully furnished and decorated. It includes two bedrooms, one with a dressing room attached, the other with a shower/toilet ensuite. It also has a lovely, fully equipped kitchen (washing machine, espresso machine, blender, juicer etc), a nice big lounge and one of the nicest balconies in the world! The front garden is wild jungle and the back is cultivated with a herb garden and vegetable garden (both mostly unplanted at the moment). It also has an outdooor bath with hot/cold water and a really great outdoor shower. The house has solar water heating and one lock-up garage. It would suit a small family or perhaps two young professionals sharing. But because it is so completely decorated it would be an unsatisfying experience for those who want to put their imprint on the space.

Click here to watch a video of the house made by the itswhatiminto.com people a while back.

  • Rent: R8000 p/m excl lights & water
  • Avail: 1st December 2015
  • Address: Puntan’s Hill, Morningside

A Long Weekend!

20 Nov

I’m afraid there’ll be no blog posts today – I spent yesterday driving around Jozi looking for bathroom taps, so didn’t have the time to write today’s posts! So sorry! But so go the joys of renovations! See you all on Monday…..

Aventurine Glass Ashtray

16 Nov

Vintage aventurine glass ashtray

Vintage aventurine glass ashtray

It’s been a good while since we’ve had one of these beautiful aventurine ashtrays for sale! Aventurine is a form of quartz, characterised by its translucency and platy mineral inclusions that give a shimmering or glistening effect. The name derives from the Italian ‘a ventura’ meaning ‘by chance’, referring to the lucky discovery of the glass during the 18th Century. Isn’t is just beautiful? And this is a lovely example, with those glorious copper-coloured flecks complementing the peach glass so perfectly!

A lovely piece of hand-blown glass in near perfect nick.

Dimensions: 16cm long x 14cm wide x 5cm high

Price: R320

German Food Ricer – SOLD

5 Nov

Westmark Spatzle Purett

Westmark Spatzle Purett

I love how industrial this German ‘Spatzle Purett‘ looks! I wasn’t 100% sure at first, but after a bit of reading I’m convinced that the Spatzle Purett can be used as a potato ricer (a utensil which in the words of one Mint customer “can change your life”!). But I think it can probably also be used for pureeing a variety of veggies (and according to some sites, fruit too!).

A very handsome and great quality piece of kitchenalia in tip-top condition.

P.S. A modern Spatzle Purett sells for $60 (R800)!

Dimensions: 34cm long x 8cm wide x 9cm tall

Price: R190
