Retro Wall Mounted Spot Lights – SOLD

Vintage OMI wall mounted spot lights

Vintage OMI wall mounted spot lights

I can’t tell you how long I spent hunting for lights just like these for our bedroom before I gave up and bought a pair of table lamps! I loved the idea of having wall mounted bedside lights, and of course wanted something retro, but they’re pretty hard to come by, especially a matching pair. These super stylish lights were made by OMI, who were bought by the American lighting company Koch & Lowy in the 1960s, so these lamps pre-date the merger (later lights are stamped Koch & Lowy, not OMI). Because of their age there are a few issues with their condition – the black bases could probably do with being resprayed, and the chrome is quite scratched in places, but personally I think it’s still passable (I don’t think I’d have them re-chromed). The design of the light fitting is pretty clever: in the photos the screw-in fitting is right near the edge of the tube, but this can be adjusted backwards and forwards to accommodate different light bulbs, although presumably your bulb is always going to protrude slightly because of the limitation of the size of the tube. The light can also be adjusted up and down, as well as sideways, so even though they’re fixed to the wall you can still direct the light to wherever you need to. On the downside though the lamps need to be wired in, which means either chasing into the wall or having surface mounted wires – in other words these lights are quite a commitment – but in my mind, one well worth it!

P.S. This wall mounted OMI picture lamp selling for $125 was the closest fitting I could find to this pair. Click here to see a larger selection of their lights, and the serious prices that they sell for.

Dimensions: Each light measures 20.5cm long x 6cm in diameter x 19cm tall (measurement is from bottom of black base to top of light as positioned in the above photo)

Price: R590 for the pair

Retro Wall Mounted Light – SOLD

Retro wall mounted light

Retro wall mounted light

This is probably one of the crazier lights that we’ve sold – and we’ve sold some pretty crazy lights over the years! But that doesn’t mean that it’s not super cool, it’s just means that it needs someone brave to find just the right spot for it!

When I first bought it I thought it might be  from the 70s, but another dealer described it as art deco, and once I looked at it again I understood where they were coming from – the way the cut-out wood is set against the chrome backing, and how the whole ‘sculpture’ is suspended from the flat wooden panel that attaches to the wall – there’s something about the design which could very easily be deco. For the most part the light is in good condition, but as so often happens there are specks of white paint on the wood from where people have painted their walls while the light was still hanging. The wood is also slightly worn in places, and there’s some minor pitting to the chrome, but I don’t think any of the wear is going to be particularly noticeable once the light has been installed – all you’re going to notice is that completely mad design!

Dimensions: 39.5cm tall x 25cm wide x 22cm deep

Price: R390

Brass and Cut Glass Hanging Light – SOLD

Brass & cut glass hanging light

Brass & cut glass hanging light

The lights in our home in Joburg left a to to be desired and we put the majority of them on the rubbish heap, but I thought that this light was something quite special. While it’s not to our taste I can still appreciate how beautiful it is – I love the cut-glass inserts and the heavily ornate brass frame. There’s a similar light selling on eBay (for a whopping $290!) that’s described as 1950s Spanish – I don’t think that this light is Spanish, but I think the time period’s about right, if not a bit earlier – a lot of the fittings in our house were art deco. The cord is intertwined with chain, which isn’t that attractive, but I think it needs it for the weight of the light, plus it’s in keeping with the style of the piece.

I really hope that we can find a home for our light – it doesn’t belong in our house anymore, but I know that it will look quite beautiful in the right setting!

Note: We’ve given it a light clean, but it could probably do with a bit of Brasso and some elbow grease!

Dimensions: 21cm wide x 28cm tall/85cm tall with cord

Price: R380

Adjustable Desk Lamp – SOLD

I love the design of these old desk lamps – just two rods, with the top rod adjustable up and down, backwards and forwards. So simple, so clever! There’s some minor wear to the paintwork, and the plastic cap at the end of the rod is cracked, but on the whole I don’t think it’s in too bad a nick.

Dimensions: Approx. 60cm tall (when fully extended) x 15cm in diameter at base

Retro Table Lamp – SOLD

Retro table lamp

You might recognise this lamp from all the times that I’ve used it as a prop over the years – until very recently it held pride of place on our sideboard (and on numerous other sideboards where I’ve used it for styling), but as much as I love it, it just doesn’t go in our new house. I still think it’s a fantastic lamp though, and I know that someone else will appreciate it just as much as I have! The shade is just a cheapy, but I think it goes well enough with the base of the lamp, which I painted white a few years ago. The lamp shade has always been a bit wonky, and needs to be manipulated from time to time so that it sits straight, and there’s a hairline crack along the base of the lamp where the cord protrudes (see pics under ‘more’), but despite all its faults it still looks great, and gives off a lovely ambient light.

A handsome and quite striking light that will make a great feature piece in somebody’s home.

Dimensions: 44cm tall x 33cm in diameter (lamp shade)/25cm in diameter (base)

Price: R320

Vintage Gooseneck Lamp – SOLD

27 Aug

Vintage gooseneck lamp

Vintage gooseneck lamp

I love the dusty pink of this vintage gooseneck lamp- such a pretty colour! The lamp has a bit of wear, which I suppose is to be expected given its age. The gooseneck isn’t quite as bendy as it should be, there are one or two scratches to the pink paint work, as well as a more obvious mark on the inside of the shade, but this should be a bit less noticeable once you have a lightbulb screwed in.

An attractive lamp that would work equally well next to your bed as it would sitting on your desk.

Dimensions: 33cm tall (when fully extended) x 14cm in diameter (across base)

Price: R160
