Zeiss Ikon Film Camera – SOLD

30 Nov

Retro Zeiss Ikon camera

Retro Zeiss Ikon camera

I’m not often tempted by old cameras – as beautiful as some of them are, I just don’t see them as being that practical, but something about this Zeiss Ikon camera won me over. The Ikomatic was made by Bilora in 1964 for Zeiss Ikon. Three models were made between 1964 and 1966, with each of them featuring different flash options. This version, model F, has a connector and reflector for the use of flash bulbs. Despite the fact that not many people use film cameras anymore, I was really hoping that somebody might buy it to use it (I read a review by someone who had walked around the streets with an Ikomatic camera, and they said the response from people was amazing), but sadly this camera takes a 126 film cartage which seems to be very hard to buy in SA. Luckily though this is such a handsome piece (I love the simple box shape, and the metal finish that runs along the edge of the camera is such a great design feature) that I think it’s good looking enough to use as a display piece in an office or home study. It would also make a great addition to a collection of cameras – grouped together these old cameras really are quite striking!

Collection of Vintage Tins – SOLD

25 Nov

Collection of vintage tins

Collection of vintage tins

I must be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of vintage tins (I’ve probably mentioned that before haven’t I?). I find them a bit frustrating – most of them don’t open that easily, and more often than not they’re a bit grimy. But a month or two ago I thought how nice it would be to use these old tins as gift boxes for homemade biscuits – wouldn’t they make great Christmas gifts? So that’s when I decided to keep my eye out for some nice tins, and this is the tin bounty that I managed to find! All of them are a bit scratched, and truth be told the Edward Sharp toffee tin isn’t that easy to open, but all of them are quite lovely and would, I think, make wonderful storage tins for some gooey chocolate brownies, or sugary sweet mince pies!

Dimensions & Prices:

  • Large round biscuit tin – R95; 27cm in diameter x 9cm deep
  • Edward Sharp biscuit tin – R85; 26cm long x 21cm wide x 6cm deep

Guzzini Ice Bucket – SOLD

19 Nov

Guzzini 'Amanda' ice bucket

Guzzini ‘Amanda’ ice bucket

Designed by Ambrogio Pozzi in the late 1970s the ‘Amanda‘ ice bucket is a Guzzini classic! There’s nothing really fancy about it, but something about the shape is very satisfying, and the clean white plastic works well with the plastic coated silver handle. Unfortunately this particular example is a little worse for wear – although the wear’s not particularly noticeable, the plastic is quite scratched, and the Guzzini maker’s mark has largely worn off the top of the ice bucket. But it still has it’s plastic inner, and should do a fine job of keeping your ice nice and cold – just in time for the festive season and all those cocktail parties (I make us sound very glamorous don’t I?!).

Eetrite Moderna Carving Set – SOLD

17 Nov

Eetrite Moderna carving set

Eetrite Moderna carving set

The Eetrite Moderna pattern is probably my very favourite design when it comes to retro cutlery! I love the combination of the black bakelite and the silver of the stainless steel – it gives such a modern impression, which I suppose was the idea when the design first introduced in the 1960s. Moderna sets are pretty hard to come by, especially complete sets, and I’m not sure that I’ve ever been lucky enough to find a carving set before? It’s probably difficult to tell from the photos, but these are quite large and impressive pieces, particularly the knives which measure nearly 40cm long! I’m a bit confused as to why there’s a bread knife as part of the set, although I suppose it would come in handy if you have rolls or a nice loaf of home-made bread on the side, and you could always use it for cutting meat as well.

P.S. Moderna cutlery sets can fetch some very high prices – a cake lifter with matching forks is selling online for a whopping $65!

Dimensions: Each knife measures approx. 39cm long x 2.5cm wide; Fork measures approx. 30cm long x 3cm wide

Price: R350 for the set

Copper-Plated African Bust – SOLD

12 Nov

Copper-plated African bust

Copper-plated African bust

I love how kitsch this African bust is! I’ve seen this design in various shapes and materials, but this version which is slightly larger than normal and is finished with a copper paint of sorts is just great. There’s some wear to the paintwork on the lady’s face, but on the whole I think the wear is commensurate with the age of the piece.

A striking bit of African kitsch that will look fantastic hanging on your lounge wall.

Soda King Syphon – SOLD

11 Nov

Soda King soda syphon

Soda King soda syphon

This has to be one of the most impressive soda syphons I’ve ever seen! Soda syphons are generally pretty decent quality, but this American Soda King syphon is even fancier than usual with its solid chrome case. Also the inside ‘straw’ which is normally made of plastic is glass, as is the inside bottle. I love the chrome case, the pattern that’s cut into it and the fill line.

A super stylish soda syphon that’s not only ridiculously handsome, but will also help you do your bit for the environment by not buying plastic bottles of sparkling water!

Dimensions: 32cm tall x 11cm in diameter
