Vintage Kid’s Print – SOLD

Vintage children's print: 'Trips in a Balloon' by Klaus Schottler

Vintage children’s print: ‘Trips in a Balloon’ by Klaus Schottler

How delightful is this vintage print, ‘Trips in a Balloon’ by Klaus Schottler! The artist isn’t well known, and the print itself is a bit worn, but it’s such a wonderful composition – can’t you just see it hanging in a little boy or girl’s bedroom? I suspect that the print is probably more or less the same age as the original painting, so a bit of wear’s to be expected, and the damage isn’t bad enough that you notice it immediately, or that it detracts from the print.

A beautifully quirky print that would look wonderful in a nursery or toddler’s bedroom.

Dimensions: 33cm long x 25cm wide x 1.5cm deep

Price: R120

Vintage Tretchikof Print – SOLD

23 Feb

'The Dying Swan' by Vladimir Tretchikoff

‘The Dying Swan’ by Vladimir Tretchikoff

It’s been a while since we’ve had a Tretchikoff print for sale – he’s become so popular that people have started charging mad prices for his prints (not that they were that cheap to begin with!). But I was lucky enough to buy this lovely print of The Dying Swan (1951) on sale, so it was just within my budget! And while the colours have faded with time, it’s in very good condition compared to a lot of the Tretchi prints that you see for sale. The frame was even in near perfect nick – that is until I decided to open it up to check for a signature! A second, original Tretchikoff signature can sometimes be found just below the edge of the printed area, but sadly the framers have glued the print onto the mounting so I couldn’t check after all – and in the process I made a bit of a mess of the back of the frame! Luckily though it’s the back, so isn’t noticeable – plus I’m not so sure that this print couldn’t do with a new frame to update it? I think a plain, dark frame might actually work quite well!

P.S. Please pay attention to the dimensions below (this isn’t the largest print)

Dimensions: Frame measures 40cm long x 31cm wide x 2cm deep

Price: R340

JH Lynch Woodland Goddess – SOLD

25 Jul

JH Lynch 'Woodland Goddess'

JH Lynch ‘Woodland Goddess’

I was really lucky to get this JH Lynch print – artworks by Lynch seem to have risen in popularity in recent years, almost mirroring the success of vintage Tretchikoff prints. This print of Lynch’s 1960s Woodland Goddess is a bit worse for wear, but the damage isn’t terribly noticeable. There’s a water stain on the one foot, and the wooden frame is a bit worn on the corner, but overall I’d say that the print is in reasonably good condition. I was a bit concerned that I might have paid too steep a price for her (I knew that she’d sell for a lot so I bid high!), but when I came home and looked at what prints sell for online, I realised the price I paid was justified – an original print of Woodland Goddess can sell for as much as $350 (that’s R3500!), and regularly sell for around the R1500 mark – crazy isn’t it?!

Dimensions: 87cm tall x 65cm wide x 2.5cm deep

Price: R590

1970s Limited Edition Framed Print – SOLD

13 Jun

Limited edition 1970s framed print

Limited edition 1970s framed print

I’m sure that most of you will recognise that this isn’t the sort of thing that we normally sell, but this print really caught my eye, and when I looked at the date (1970) and noticed that the telephone number of the framers was only five digits long, I thought “well it is retro after all”! But that’s not really the reason I bought it – I think it’s a great composition, and isn’t that what they say you should do when it comes to investing in art  – buy what you like?

The frame could do with a bit of TLC, although I think you could still get away with it as is. The only real issue are the yellow spots that have started to appear on the paper. To be honest they don’t really bother me, but if it is an issue you could always have it re-framed – the portion of the paper that has the actual print on it seems to be fine.

A really interesting and attractive retro print that would fit in perfectly with a contemporary office or home.

Dimensions: Frame measures 55cm long x 39cm wide x 1.5cm deep

Price: R240

Swan Plaster Wall Plaque – SOLD

13 May

Swan ballet plaster wall plaque

Swan ballet plaster wall plaque

I’ve had this wall plaque for sometime now, but it was a copper colour and had one or two chips along the rim, so it needed a bit of a fix-me-up! It’s taken me a year or so, but I finally got round to it, and I have to say I think it looks quite lovely (although I’m not the best painter – I did miss one or two spots!). The plaque is signed Alan D. Burbidge, and as far as I can tell is an interpretation of Trtechikoff’s The Dying Swan – the pose might be different, but if you look at the ruffles in the ballerina’s skirt you’ll see that there’s a striking similarity. I love the composition of the picture, with the swan’s wing arching over the ballerina – a really graceful image.

This would make a lovely addition to a little girl’s bedroom, but would work just as well in a lounge or dining room.

Dimensions: 32.5cm long x 22.5cm wide x 5cm deep

Price: R180

Small Vintage Mirror Picture – SOLD

14 Nov

Vintage mirror picture

Vintage mirror picture

I’ve always loved these art nouveau style picture mirrors, although I have to say the larger versions are that much more impressive. This is quite a small version, and it’s a bit worse for wear – the wooden frame is a bit tired looking and the silver is starting to go around the edges of the mirror – but it’s still very presentable and would look quite sweet in a bathroom or dressing area.

Dimensions: 29.5cm long x 22.5cm wide x 1.5cm deep
