Tinus de Jongh Print – SOLD

29 Oct

Tinus de Jongh framed print

Tinus de Jongh framed print

Despite having studied art at school, my knowledge of SA artists is pretty limited, but even I know who Tinus de Jongh is! Born in the Netherlands, but having spent most of his adult life in South Africa, de Jongh was a prolific painter of South African landscapes. In fact he produced so many paintings that I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you didn’t grow up with an original hanging on your wall! Sadly I’m only lucky enough to own a print that hangs together with a  collection of vintage prints in my ‘Mint’ room (see last pic below). I need to add one or two more frames, but even with only half the wall finished the effect is quite striking – and that’s how I envision this lovely framed print hanging in someones home – as part of a larger collection of paintings. The frame is a little worse for wear, but being very dark, the wear really isn’t very noticeable. I think that the print itself has probably also faded a bit, but I really like the colours as they are and the way that they contrast with the dark frame.

A simple, but striking composition from one of South Africa’s most renowned painters.

P.S. Please excuse the poorly lit pic of my ‘Mint’ room – I took it very late in the afternoon when the sun had already disappeared!

Hand-Coloured Photo in Convex Frame – SOLD

Hand-coloured photo in convex frame

Hand-coloured photo in convex frame

I nearly didn’t buy this last of the hand-coloured photos because of the poor condition of the frame – while all of the frames could do with a bit of TLC, this one is definitely in the worst nick! But an artist-friend of mine who was quite excited by the photo said that if it was hers to keep she would paint the frame black with gold accents, and as kitsch as that sounds I think it would probably look fantastic, and probably wouldn’t even be that hard to do! I’m very grateful that I did end up taking this frame though, because nearly everyone who saw the three photographs together liked this one the most! And I can understand why – it really is the most lovely image!

Dimensions: 54.5cm long x 34cm wide x 2.5cm deep

Prices: R370

Hand-Coloured Photo in Convex Frame – SOLD

Hand-coloured photo in convex frame

This is another one of those haunting hand-coloured photos – I think that they’re really quite beautiful, but also a little scary at the same time, if you know what I mean? Although after I’ve said that, I have an entire wall of this style of art in my spare bedroom, and I just love the affect! Like the picture that I featured last week, there’s a fair bit of wear to the both the photo and the frame, but the clear convex glass saves it from looking too tarnished. The curve of the  glass also means that it’s incredibly difficult to photograph, so my apologies if the image isn’t very clear!

A very special piece that will hopefully find an equally special new home to house it!

Dimensions: 54.5cm long x 35cm wide x 2.5cm deep

Extra Large Mounted Print ‘Zoologischer Garten Munich’ – SOLD

17 Oct

1912 poster, 'Zoologischer Garten Munich' by Ludwig Hohlwein

1912 poster, ‘Zoologischer Garten Munich’ by Ludwig Hohlwein

I’ve been eying out this mounted poster for some time now, but because of the damage, and the fact that it’s so darn large, I was a bit wary to buy it. But after a couple of months of lusting after it I realised that if I loved it this much it’s likely that somebody else will also fall in love with it and forgive it its imperfections. And to be honest the scratches aren’t that noticeable once its hanging on the wall – I bought a smaller version of a similar poster for Justin’s ‘man cave’ and I can’t really see the scratches anymore at all.

Designed in 1912 by German illustrator Ludwig Hohlwein, it would seem that poster was used to promote the zoological gardens in Munich. I think it’s absolutely amazing that Hohlwein imagined this composition over a hundred years ago – it really does look like it could have been designed today!

A beautiful piece of design that will look incredible in the right home.

Note:

  • A small reproduction of this poster printed onto canvas will cost you a whopping $75!
  • This is a seriously large poster so please pay attention to the dimensions below.

Dimensions: 130cm long x 98cm wide x 1cm deep

Price: R410

Hand-Coloured Photo in Convex Frame – SOLD

Hand-coloured photo in convex glass frame

Hand-coloured photo in convex glass frame

I’ve seen quite a few of these hand-coloured photographs over the years, but more often than not they’re either too expensive or too far gone to consider buying. This portrait of a young lady is obviously quite worn (I’d guess that she’s in the region of 100 years or so though, so it’s not that surprising), but she’s not beyond recognition, in fact I think the image is quite lovely! I bought two other hand-coloured portraits at the same time, and I think that the three would look fantastic grouped together, although they might be quite intense as a group? But alone, or as part of a collage, this convex glass framed photograph is definitely going to make an impact. A special piece of local family history that deserves a second chance at life.

Note: These hand-coloured photos tend to sell for around $80, but can go for a fair bit more.

Dimensions: 54.5cm long x 34cm wide x 2.5cm deep

Set of 5 Framed Postcards – SOLD

19 Aug

Set of 5 framed postcards

Set of 5 framed postcards

At first I though that  these reproduction 1920s postcards were pretty new, but when I opened up the frames and saw the stamp for The Art Centre, East London, on yellowed cardboard, I realised that they must be at least 20 or 30 years old, which somehow makes them more appealing than if they were framed yesterday! They really are a fantastic collection of art from the period and would look great hung together in a home office or bedroom – in fact I think that they’d probably look great hung anywhere!

Dimensions: Each frame measures 19cm long x 14.5cm wide

Price: R40 each/R180 for the set of 5
