Vintage Pyrex Water Jug – SOLD

11 Nov

Vintage American pyrex jug

Vintage American pyrex jug

I know it’s terribly difficult to get a good idea of this jug against the bright orange background, but this really is quite a cool piece! Being made of very fine pyrex there’s a certain fragility to the jug, despite the fact that pyrexware’s pretty hardy! The handle’s also a great design feature – I love the fact that it doesn’t return, that it’s kind of suspended in mid-air.

An unusual and practical water jug that I’m certain will be well used by whichever lucky fella or lass lands up with it!

Dimensions: 22cm tall x 13cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R150

Pyrex Bowl and Dish – SOLD

20 Oct

Small pyrex mixing bowl & lidded dish

Small pyrex mixing bowl & lidded dish

I love this little mixing bowl, but the real star here is the lidded dish! Isn’t it so lovely? It may be a bit on the small side, but the pattern is just fantastic, and for its age it’s in excellent condition! The mixing bowl is equally as lovely, just not as unusual, although it doesn’t have a maker’s mark (you’d expect to see a Hamilton Beach stamp on its base), which I suppose makes it slightly different.

A nice bit of pyrexware in good, clean condition.

Dimensions: Lidded dish – 19cm long (incl. handles) x 16cm wide x 6.5cm tall (with lid on); Mixing bowl – 11.5cm tall x 16cm in diameter

Prices: Lidded dish – R120; Mixing bowl – R85

1970s Arcopal Dishes – SOLD

19 Oct

Set of 6 Arcopal dishes

Set of 6 Arcopal dishes

I love pyrex dinnerware! Well in this case it’s not actually pyrex, but Arcopal glass, a toughened glass very similar to pyrexware, just a bit milkier. And I love the 1970s pattern – ‘Scania’ – no idea why it’s called that, but it’s lovely to look at! There’s some wear to the pattern, and the glass has some fine scratches, but given that the dishes are in the region of forty years old, they’re really not doing too badly!

P.S. These dishes are quite deep – would make good pasta dishes or even shallow soup bowls

Dimensions: Each dish measures 22cm in diameter x 3cm deep

Price: R140 for the set

Milk Glass Shaving Mugs – SOLD

22 Sep

Macbeath Evans milk glass shaving mugs

Macbeth-Evans milk glass shaving mugs

I’ve seen one or two of these double-headed horse mugs over the years and have always wondered about them so I’m glad that I’ve now had an excuse to do a bit of research on them. The mugs were made by an American company, Macbeth-Evans, who specialised in fine glassware, but were most famous for their depression-ware glass. These milk glass mugs were designed as shaving mugs, with most sites dating them to the 1930s. The period makes sense to me because the company was taken over by Corning in 1936, and no one seems to refer to the mugs as anything other than Macbeth-Evans. Obviously not many people shave with a brush and blade anymore, but for those few civilised folk out there who do then this is the missing accessory that you’ve been looking for! And for everyone else I think these mugs would make great cups for your bathroom (toothbrush, toothpaste etc), especially if you have a bit of a deco theme going on, but even if you don’t!

Note: the one mug is more of a white than the other, which is a light cream colour (see pics under ‘more’).

Dimensions: Each mug measures 9.5cm tall x 13.6cm wide x 6.5cm in diameter

Price: R110 each

Hamilton Beach Mixing Bowls – SOLD

19 Aug

Pair of Hamilton Beach mixing bowls

Pair of Hamilton Beach mixing bowls

These pyrex mixings bowls would originally have been sold with a Hamilton Beach mixer, and are a great example of the quality that you used to see back in the day. These were just accessories, but look how beautifully they were designed, and consider the quality of the materials they used that have allowed these bowls to remain practically unscathed after sixty odd year of use. I think you’d struggle to find something made today (that doesn’t require you to bond your house to buy it) that’s going to look this good in sixty years time!

Dimensions: Large bowl – 12cm tall x 22cm in diameter: Small bowl – 12cm tall x 16cm in diameter

Price: R18o for the pair

Daisy Pyrex Dish – SOLD

13 Aug

JAJ Daisy Pyrex dish

JAJ Daisy Pyrex dish

I’m a massive fan of these pastel coloured pyrex dishes, in fact I’d go so far as to say that, with the exception of vintage kettles, they’re probably one of my favourite kitchen items! We have a collection of different coloured and different shaped pyrex bowls of our own, and not only do we use them all the time, but they look so pretty on display! Sadly I don’t have this 1950s Daisy pattern in my collection (I wish I did), and none of my dishes have lids, but I can’t justify holding onto this one – I have too many already, and I’m not prepared to part with any of mine!

Note: Both the dish and the lid have some wear – see pics under ‘more’.

Dimensions: 30cm long x 17cm wide x 7.5cm high (with lid on)/4.5cm without lid

Price: R130
