Retro Cake Forks – SOLD

Retro forks and cake lifter

Retro forks and cake lifter

These cake forks are crazy retro! The box, which is a bit worse for wear, is almost too retro, but the forks themselves are just great! I love the design that’s embossed on the handles, and of course it’s always nice when a set’s complete and in mint condition.

Dimensions: Cake forks- 14.5cm long; Cake lifter – 26cm long

Price: R140

Note: Mint puts up three new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog (more…)

Apostle Teaspoons – SOLD

19 Nov

Silver plated 'apostle' teaspoons

Silver plated ‘apostle’ teaspoons

The box for these vintage silver plated ‘apostle’ teaspoons doesn’t seem quite in fitting with the style of the spoons, so I’m not sure if it’s original or not, but at least it’s managed to protect the teaspoons over the years – for the most part these teaspoons are in great nick! And aside from their condition, it’s also nice to see a complete set of six teaspoons, plus a spoon for serving sugar – not something that you see that often.

Note: I’m not sure why, but the teaspoons are a bit lighter than your average silver plated teaspoons.

Dimensions: Each teaspoon measures 12cm long

Price: R140 for the set

Note: Mint puts up three new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog (more…)

Retro Coffee Set – SOLD

21 Oct

Retro plated coffee set

Retro plated coffee set

I really wish there was a maker’s mark on this set because I’d love to know who made it – it’s got a bit of a Scandinavian feel to it, but without a stamp of any description it’s quite hard to find any definitive information. I’d guess that it dates to the 1960s, and presumably is part of a larger set. The milk jug is missing and for some reason there are two sugar bowls, although they’re different sizes – perhaps they’re to match the different sized coffee pots depending on how many guests you’re serving? I’d assumed that the smaller pot was for hot water, but perhaps it’s just a slightly smaller coffee pot? Who knows! Sadly there’s some damage, most notably to the taller coffee pot. Both the spout and the base have been bent out of shape (the metal’s really soft!), and the metal on the tray’s also a bit tarnished. But the rest of the set is nice and shiny, in fat it really doesn’t look like it’s been used very much? I love the wrapped handles, and the overall simplicity of the design. this may be a bit of an odd set (two sugar bowls, and no milk jug), but it’s an exceptionally handsome one!

Dimensions: Tray – 39cm long x 23.5cm wide; Tall coffee pot – 25cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Short coffee pot – 17cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Tall sugar bowl – 10cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Medium sugar bowl – 8.5cm tall x 9cm in diameter

Price:

  • Set one: Tall coffee pot, sugar bowl & tray – R320
  • Set two: Short coffee pot & sugar bowl – R240/OR
  • R500 for the full set

Demitasse Teaspoons – SOLD

19 Oct

Demitasse teaspoons

Demitasse teaspoons

These vintage demitasse teaspoons have seen a bit of use in their time and are starting to show their age – the silver plating is quite worn and the little coffee bean handles are a bit tired looking, but I’ve seen a lot worse! They’re still a very handsome set, and of course are perfectly functional.

A nice gift for anyone who’s into their coffee – a growing group given how coffee-obsessed people are these days!

Dimensions: Each spoon measures 10cm long x 2cm at their widest

Price: R130 for the set of seven teaspoons

Note: Mint puts up four new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third and fourth at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog (more…)

Small Plated Jug and Cup – SOLD

16 Oct

Small silver plated jug & brass cup

Small silver plated jug & brass cup

A friend of mine donated this lovely little silver plated jug and art nouveau cup to the cause, otherwise I’m not sure that I would have bought them – not that they’re not fantastic pieces, it’s just that they’re not really the style of goods I tend to buy. That being said I’ve fallen completely in love with this little brass cup! I’m not entirely sure what you’d use it for? Holding teaspoons? A pot plant for a wee cactus? Hopefully somebody will come up with a use for it because it really is quite something! I’m also not sure what the jug is for? Perhaps it’s a fancy-ass milk jug? I’m not too sure? But it’s quite delightful with its rattan-wrapped handle and unusual lid. It’s not in great condition, but I suspect that it’s quite old, so it’s not surprising that it has a few bumps and bruises!

Dimensions: Brass cup – 7.5cm tall x 6cm in diameter; Silver plated jug – 13cm tall x 8cm in diameter

Price: Brass cup – R75  SOLD; Silver plated jug – R110

Vintage Silver Plated Cocktail Shaker – SOLD

19 Aug

Vintage silver plated cocktail shaker

Vintage silver plated cocktail shaker

I see cocktail shakers for sale all the time, but most of them are modern chrome versions, which hold no appeal for me. This lovely vintage cocktail shaker, while very plain, is a completely different kettle of fish! For starters it’s silver plated, which immediately elevates it above its chrome counterparts, then you have the detailing that’s gone into the styling of the shaker – small things like a slight depression on the lid where your thumb sits neatly when you’re shaking your cocktail, and the deco shape of the top of the cocktail shaker – I think that’s probably the period it dates to. The inside is much cleaner than these cocktail shakers normally are, but there is some wear to the silver plating where the brass (or copper?) is starting to show through – it’s wear that I don’t really mind though – it shows that it’s been well loved and well used in its time. What’s the point of a good looking cocktail shaker if you don’t get a good margarita out of it?

Dimensions: Approx. 23cm tall x 11cn in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R220
