Demitasse Spoons – SOLD

3 Jul

Vintage demitasse spoons

Vintage demitasse spoons

These vintage demitasse teaspoons have seen some serious use in their time, and they’ve got the battle scars to prove it! The plainer set with the olive green bean handles are particularly worse for wear with the silver plating quite tarnished. The set with the brighter green handles has faired a bit better, and in addition to the handles still being nice and bright, they also have those lovely shell shaped spoons! So pretty! But even though both sets are a little sad they’re still very special in my books – I just love these demitasse teaspoons, and to get sets with different coloured handles (instead of the usual black) is always pretty exciting!

Dimensions: Each teaspoons measures approx. 10cm long x 2cm at their widest

Prices: Bright green handles – R120; Olive green handles – R80

Small Brass Handled Teapot, Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl – SOLD

1 Jul

Small brass handled teapot, milk jug & sugar bowl

Small brass handled teapot, milk jug & sugar bowl

I bought this small metal teapot with matching milk jug and sugar bowl some time back, but I wasn’t able to sell it because the hinge that keeps the lid on the teapot closed was missing. Luckily though I have some very clever jewellery friends (thank you Sir Nick!), and I was able to have a new hinge made! This is a rather small set, and not really the type of thing that I normally go in for, but I could tell that it was seriously well made, and the brass handles are really quite lovely to look at (and to hold)!

An unusual little set that would probably only serve tea for two, but what a civilised tea party it would be!

Dimensions: Teapot – 12cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter; Milk jug – 5.5cm tall x 6cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 5.5cm tall x 6cm in diameter

Price: R230 for the set

Vintage Snack Dish – SOLD

22 Apr

This vintage snack dish is a bit worse for wear, probably a bit more than it shows in the pics – although for its age it’s probably not doing too badly! Looking at the style of the dish, with the plastic (possibly bakelite?) round handle, I’d think that it dates to the art deco period. In the photo labels I’ve said that it’s plated, but it’s not stamped ‘epns’ as most silver plated pieces are, so I’m thinking that it might actually be chrome? Regardless of what it’s made from or how old it is, it’s still a delightful and practical snack dish – the ball handle makes it a nice quirky piece and the compartments mean that it will be easy to separate your crackers from your crudités!

Dimensions: 22.5cm wide x 5cm tall (including handle)

Price: R130

Silver Plated Beer Mugs – SOLD

15 Apr

Silver plated trophy beer mugs

Silver plated trophy beer mugs

While I really like old trophies, I don’t often buy them – I see so many of them for sale that there has to be something quite special about a trophy to make me want to take it home with me. While these silver plated beer mugs aren’t trophies per se, they’re in the same vein, but something about them caught my eye! For starters they’re pretty decent quality silver plate – definitely a lot fancier than your average trophy on a plastic stand! They also have a lovely shape to them – the handles in particular have a beautiful simplicity to them – and then there’s their condition, which is pretty good given that they’re in the region of 60 years old! In fact I think their condition is good enough for them to still be used as beer mugs – wouldn’t an ice cold beer taste good out of one of these mugs? And if you’re not a beer drinker, but still think that they’re lovely to look at you can always repurpose them as pot plants – they would look so lovely sitting in a light-filled bathroom or dining room with one or two succulents growing in them!

Dimensions: Each mug measures approx. 11cm tall x 9cm in diameter

Price: R95 each/R160 for the pair

Silver Plated Coffee Pot – SOLD

1 Apr

Silver plated coffee pot

Silver plated coffee pot

I don’t buy silver plated coffee pots very often – either they’re just too pricey for my pocket, or they’ve had their day and aren’t really functional as coffee pots any longer. But not only is this coffee pot in decent nick and fairly priced, but it also has a lovely style to it – a lot less ornate than silver plated pieces normally are. I love the wicker handle, even if it is starting to show its age, and the plainness of the shape is very attractive. There is a bit of tarnishing to the silver plate, but for its age it’s not doing badly at all!

P.S. This same coffee pot is for sale on eBay for close to £35 (that’s just over R600!).

Dimensions: 18cm tall x 10cm in diameter

Price: R230

Retro Stacking Candle Holders – SOLD

12 Mar

Retro West German candle holders stacked

Retro West German candle holders stacked

These über cool candle holders were designed in the 1960s by Ceasar Stoffi and Fritz Nagel, and were manufactured by BMF (Bayerische Metallwaren Fabrik). The design is based on a triangular formation, and comes in a number of variations (wood, copper, slightly different shapes), with this particular permutation, Orion, supposedly being one of the rarer. Traditionally the candle holders were sold in sets of three, with the idea that you could build onto the set by buying more, but these days the prices are so high that you see them sold individually (sorry!). But while they are rather pricey (especially for their size!), you can’t help but appreciate what a great design they are – I love the fact that they’re so well balanced that you can leave one of the holders hanging in midair!

Note: Candle holders sold without candles.

Dimensions: Each candlestick holder measures 11cm wide x 7.5cm tall

Price: R180 each/R500 for the set
