Vintage Cast-Iron Pot – SOLD

15 Dec

Small cast-iron pot

Small cast-iron pot

I’m a little bit suspicious of this pot! Only after I bought it did I notice a slight difference in colour between the pot and its lid – the pot is a definite solid red, whereas the lid has a hint of orange to it. The pot is also cast-iron enamel, whereas the lid is just enamel, plus the lid is marked ‘Hendlers’, and I don’t ever remember seeing cast-iron pot from Hendlers before. But that being said if I didn’t notice the difference as first, it obviously doesn’t shout out at you, plus it’s still a good quality pot, and because of my suspicions, its a bit cheaper that it would normally be.

NB: There is some wear to the inside of the pot, as well as to both the wooden and metal handles (see pics under ‘more’).

Dimensions: 17cm in diameter x 15cm tall (with lid on)

Vintage Ornate Mirror – SOLD

14 Dec

Vintage ornate mirror

Vintage ornate mirror

This is one elegant mirror – way too pretty for my house, but in the right home it’s going to look quite beautiful! There’s some minor damage to the frame, but overall both the glass and the frame are in good nick for their years. In fact looking at the condition of the glass, I’d say that it’s probably been replaced at some point. The glass also has a visible polished edge, whereas for its age I’d expect either a bevelled edge, or a piece of glass that fits under the frame, but it’s not the end of the world – it’s still a really striking mirror that wold look great in a guest loo, entrance hall or bedroom.

Dimensions: 88cm tall x 34cm wide (at its widest) x 2.5cm deep

Price: R520

Cut-Glass Decanter – SOLD

14 Dec

Vintage cut-glass decanter

Vintage cut-glass decanter

I bought this cut-glass decanter from the same couple that I bought that beautiful blue decanter from a few months back. It was another piece that they had inherited, and I suspect that it’s from more or less the same period. The glass really is quite beautiful with its dark green base trimmed with gold, and finished off with a faceted stopper. The stopper gives the impression of being crystal, but I’m fairly certain that it’s not – the finish isn’t nearly as fine as you’d expect with a piece of crystal glass, although it’s still a very delicate piece of glass.

A beautifully elegant decanter for your drinks trolley or bar – pair it with some vintage glasses and you’ll add some serious vintage style to your home.

Dimensions: 32cm tall x 12cm in diameter

Price: R260

Vintage Japanese Teapot – SOLD

14 Dec

Vintage Chinese teapot

Vintage Japanese teapot

At first glance I would have thought that this vintage teapot was Chinese (not that I know that much about oriental ceramics!), but after a bit of research it seems that this ‘Phoenix Ware’ teapot is in fact Japanese, and was produced by world-famous porcelain producers, Noritake. I have to say it’s quite different to any Noritake that I’ve seen before – while it’s very delicate, it’s not quite as refined as Noritake pieces tend to be, although I think it has a fair bit of age to it which might explain the difference. The teapot had a set of matching teacups that sadly I couldn’t afford – the teacups were very fine (and quite beautiful!), as is the teapot with its lovely bamboo handle and wonderful phoenix pattern. It also has a removable tea strainer, so you can  choose to use it with leaves or bags. Sadly the strainer’s been damaged, but the repair is barely noticeable, although it should act as a warning to others – this is a fragile piece to be treated with respect!

A wonderful gift for any tea lovers out there – how much more civilised to drink your tea from this delightful teapot than from a plain old mug!

Dimensions: 25cm tall (incl. handle) x 13cm in diameter

Small Retro Vase – SOLD

14 Dec

Small retro glass vase

Small retro glass vase

It’s not quite of the same quality, but this small retro glass vase reminds me a lot of the work produced by Finnish glass manufacturer RiihimakiThe simplicity of the design, the lack of any ornate curves, and the colour of the glass reminds me a lot of the mid-century Scandi style of art glass, although I really can’t say for certain – for all I know this glass could have been made yesterday! But that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s a very handsome vase, in near mint condition, that would look fantastic as part of a collection of retro glass.

Tabletop Filing Drawers – SOLD

11 Dec

Vintage tabletop metal filing drawers

Vintage tabletop metal filing drawers

This is one of the most delightful set of tabletop filing drawers that I’ve come across! It’s not in perfect condition (the photos probably make it look a bit cleaner than it really is – the light was a bit crazy when I took the pics), but it’s not in terrible nick either, and on the plus side it has those great little legs and that very sweet paper top! I’m pretty sure that someone’s added the legs on after the fact, but they work pretty well, and the patterned paper is definitely a home-made add-on, but I love it!

The perfect gift for any crafter or DIY friends – you can stash all sorts of bits and bobs in those neat little drawers!

Dimensions: 46cm tall x 37.5cm deep x 26.5cm wide
