Small Retro Vase – SOLD

Small retro glass vase

Small retro glass vase

It’s not quite of the same quality, but this small retro glass vase reminds me a lot of the work produced by Finnish glass manufacturer RiihimakiThe simplicity of the design, the lack of any ornate curves, and the colour of the glass reminds me a lot of the mid-century Scandi style of art glass, although I really can’t say for certain – for all I know this glass could have been made yesterday! But that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s a very handsome vase, in near mint condition, that would look fantastic as part of a collection of retro glass.

Retro Japanese Carafe – SOLD

Retro Tivoli carafe

Retro Tivoli carafe

This retro green carafe isn’t that large, but it’s super stylish! I love the fact that it doesn’t have a handle, and the shape is fantastic! For some reason I thought ‘Tivoli‘ was an Italian make, but it turns out that it’s Japanese, which in my world is way cooler (sorry to all the Italians out there!).

Dimensions: 17.5cm tall x 10cm in diameter (at its widest)

Small Retro Glass Vase – SOLD

Small retro glass vase

Small retro glass vase

This vase may not be that large, but it’s definitely interesting – and in a good way! I really like the shape – those pinched sides make for a very striking design! It’s also a bit strange in that it looks to be moulded glass, but it’s much better quality than you’d expect to see with a mass-produced piece of glass? And while it’s a bit on the petite side, it’s still a very solid vase.

A great quality piece for all the retro lovers out there!

P.S. I’m not sure how clear it is from the photos, but the colour of the glass is a great charcoal grey.

Dimensions: 14.5cm tall x 11.5cm wide x 6.5cm deep

Tall Cylindrical Vase – SOLD

30 Nov

Tall cylindrical vase

Tall cylindrical vase

I really wish I knew something about this vase, but I’ve hunted for information online and come up with absolutely nothing! It’s a strangely difficult vase to photograph , and I have to sat I think it probably looks better in person. It’s a very tall piece, and I’m not sure how well that comes across in the photos, plus the way that the rim of the vase curls looks a bit clumsy in the pictures, but in reality it’s a very clean looking piece of glass. Not being able to find any about its history I obviously can’t say how old it is, but my gut tells me that it has some age to it, plus it took us quite a while to get it completely clean – there were some very stubborn old water stains that you normally only see with older pieces of glass.

This is a great statement piece that would look fantastic on display as is, or filled with a bunch of delicious monster leaves or some other equally impressive flowers.

Dimensions: 35cm tall x 11cm in diameter

Price: R330

Small Murano-Style Sommerso Vase – SOLD

24 Nov

Murano-style sommerso vase

Murano-style sommerso vase

I have to say, this really is a rather peculiar vase! It’s fantastic quality, and going on the design I’d guess that it’s Murano glass, but there’s something strange about the opening at the top of the vase. It’s much smaller than you’d expect it to be and something about the way that it’s been finished makes the vase look a bit like a base for a lamp? But there’s no opening for the wire so presumably it was always intended to be a vase – in which case it would be described as a ‘bud vase’ for single stems. And as fas as bud vases go, I think it’s a pretty special one – at least I’ve never seen one quite like it before!

Dimensions: 27cm tall x 9cm in diameter (at its widest)

Scandinavian Art Glass Vase – SOLD

Retro Riihimaki vase by Tamara Aladin, Design no. 1376

Retro Riihimaki vase by Tamara Aladin, Design no. 1376

Founded in 1910 Riihimaki were at one stage the largest glass manufacturers in Finland. Over the eighty odd years that the company was in existence Riihimaki produced some seriously beautiful glass, including this wonderfully simple bamboo-inspired vase, Design no. 1376. The vase was designed by Tamara Aladin who joined the company in 1959, and produced this design in 1970. Some 45 years later and the vase still has such a contemporary edge to it, as do most of the Riihimaki pieces that I’ve researched.

A timeless piece of glass that would look fantastic in a contemporary setting.

NB: Please pay attention to the dimensions below – this is not a large vase.

Dimensions: 25cm tall x 10cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R150
