Retro Flip Clock – SOLD

Retro Copal flip clock

Retro Copal flip clock

I just love these retro flip clocks – even when they’re a bit worse for wear, like this Copal bedside clock is. It’s missing the clear plastic pane that should protect the face of the clock, an there’s also a small crack along the top of the clock. On top of all of that the plastic’s also a bit discoloured in places, but for all its wear it’s still a very handsome clock (the damage doesn’t really shout out at you), and it’s in perfect working order, which I suppose is pretty important when it comes to keeping time!

Dimensions: 13cm wide x 8cm deep x 6.5cm tall

Price: R140

Large Enamel Chargers – SOLD

11 Dec

Pair of large enamel chargers

Pair of large enamel chargers

These enamel chargers are a wee bit tinny (not as heavy an enamel as I’d like them to be), but what they lack in quality they more than make up for in size – they really are quite large! In fact I’m not sure that I’ve had an enamel tray this big before, definitely not one the size of the largest of this pair. As with most enamel, there are a few chips to the paintwork, but the wear just adds character to the trays.

A great pair to hang on your kitchen wall, or to display glasses on at your next pool party!

Dimensions: Extra large enamel charger – 50cm in diameter x 4cm deep; Large enamel charger – 45cm in diameter x 4cm deep

Price: Extra large enamel charger – R150; Large enamel charger – R130

Retro Kiaat and Leather Armchair – SOLD

10 Dec

John Tabraham leather & kiaat armchair

John Tabraham leather & kiaat armchair

This is definitely one of the more expensive armchairs that I’ve bought, and while some people are going to think I’m crazy for paying the price that I did, but for me it was love at first sight! Despite the leather being quite worn, especially on the back straps, there was something about this chair that just shouted out to me. Designed by John  Tabraham for South African furniture makers, Kallenbach, the armchair has a definite retro aesthetic, with its low slung back and beautiful kiaat wooden frame. The leather could possibly do with being replaced at some point in the future, but for the time being I’ve just given it a really good polish, and provided that it’s well cared for, I think it’s probably good for a few more years.

A super stylish (and seriously comfortable)  armchair that will look absolutely fantastic in the right home!

Dimensions: 69cm tall x 77cm wide x 69cm deep

Price: R2950

Melitta Coffee Filters – SOLD

10 Dec

Melitta coffee filters

Melitta coffee filters

Ideally I would have liked to find these Melitta coffee filters with their matching coffee pots, but I’ve only ever sold a few complete sets, so I don’t think they’re too common. Luckily though it’s a nice simple design so these ceramic ‘filters’ should easily fit on top of other coffee pots. I’ve called them filters for lack of a better name, but in reality you still need a paper filter to fit on the inside of the ceramic, so I suppose a better name would probably be ‘filter holder’? The idea is that you pop the filter (ceramic with paper inside) on top of a coffee pot or cup (depending on the size of your filter), pour your grinds inside, fill the filter with hot water, and let the coffee drip through – it’s as simple as that!

Click here to watch a video of a someone’s who’s perfected the art of the Melitta pour over method – it obviously doesn’t need to be this obsessive, but if you’re seriously into your coffee this might interest you…..

P.S. Having finished writing this blog post I’ve just discovered that these filters are in fact called ‘brewing cones’!

Dimensions: Large brewing cone – 11cm tall x 12.5cm in diameter (at its widest); Small brewing cone – 7cm tall x 8.5cm in diameter (at its widest)

Prices: Large brewing cone – R110; Small brewing cone – R90

Retro Kathie Winkel Coffee Pot – SOLD

10 Dec

Retro Kathie Winkle coffee pot

Retro Kathie Winkle coffee pot

I love everything about this Kathie Winkle coffee pot designed for James Broadhurst & Sons in 1971. I love the fact that it’s in such great nick, that the colours are still so bright, including the white porcelain body of the coffee pot, and of course I love that fabulous 70’s Roulette pattern! So, so cool! I even love the maker’s stamp – I think I’ve mentioned this before – the Kathie Winkle backstamp is super attractive! The only issue, and it’s a minor one, is that the lid is ever so slightly wobbly. It’s definitely the original lid, but it doesn’t fit the coffee pot perfectly. There’s no risk of it falling off (fortunately it’s a nice deep lid), but it does wobble a wee bit…..

P.S. As much as I love this coffee pot, there’s another dealer who thinks even more of it than I do – someone is selling this exact coffee pot on eBay for nearly R2000 – but I have to say that they’re probably short a few marbles!

Dimensions: 22cm tall x 13cm in diameter

Price: R220

Retro Handblown Glass Bowls – SOLD

9 Dec

Set of retro hand-blown bowls

Set of retro hand-blown bowls

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a set of bowls quite like this! They’re unusual in that all of the bowls are hand-blown, evident by the fact that the bowls are all slightly different sizes. There’s also a certain naivety or roughness to the glass that contradicts the sleekness of the design – bar the detail on the foot of the larger bowl, the set has quite a contemporary feel to it.

I’m sure they won’t be to everyone’s taste, but personally I think that this is an uber stylish (and super exciting) set of bowls!

NB: The glass is quite a bit darker than it appears in the photos – almost a dark olivey-brown colour.

Dimensions: Large bowl – 25.5cm in diameter x 9cm tall; Small bowls –  12cm in diameter x 5cm tall;

Price: R320 for the set
