Royal Doulton Cake Set – SOLD

3 Feb

Royal Doulton cake set

Royal Doulton cake set

This beautiful Royal Doulton cake set matches the cups and saucers that we had for sale last week – isn’t it so lovely? I really do think that it’s something special! And in fantastic condition given its age – bar some minor wear to the gold trim, there’s very little wrong with this set, which is impressive given that it’s in the region of 70 years old! I love the colours – the gentle green and grey make for a really lovely combination, and the pattern itself is so beautifully designed – it looks like it could have been produced yesterday!

A great set in near mint condition.

Dimensions & Prices:

  • Cake plate – R75; 22cm in diameter (24cm in diameter incl. ‘handles’)
  • Side plates – R160 for the set; each plates measures 15.5cm in diameter

Royal Doulton Teacups – SOLD

30 Jan

Royal Doulton teacups & saucers

Royal Doulton teacups & saucers

People really do go nuts for Royal Doulton, and while it’s obviously very good quality china, I sometimes find the patterns a bit too old fashioned for my liking. But no so with these beautiful teacups& saucers! Ordinarily I would avoid buying a set that’s so incomplete, but these teacups were just so beautiful that I was more than happy to take them home with me! Plus they may have lost a few of their friends over the years, but for their age they’re in fantastic condition! I can’t track down the pattern name, but because of Royal Doulton’s clever marking system I can tell you that these cups & saucers date to between 1939 and 1942, making them around 70 years old!!

Dimensions: Cups – 7cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Saucers – 14cm in diameter

Price: R65 per cup & saucer

Royal Standard Teacups and Saucers – SOLD

28 Jan

Royal Standard 'Paulette' teacups & saucers

Royal Standard ‘Paulette’ teacups & saucers

How pretty are these Royal Standard teacups?! So lovely! ‘Royal Standard’ was one of the trademarks used on china made by Chapmans Longton Ltd., a pottery house based in Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England. The trademark was used from 1949 until 1969, when Chapmans Langton were taken over by Royal Doulton – going on the style of the teacups I’d guess that they date to the late ’40s or early 1950s latest. The gold trim on the cups and saucers is quite worn, but the floral decoration, bits of which are hand-painted, is in excellent condition for its years.

A delightful tea set that would make a wonderful addition to a collection of vintage china!

P.S. A single Royal China ‘Paulette’ teacup & saucer is selling for $22 on Etsy!

Dimensions: Cups – 7cm tall x 8cm in diameter; Saucers – 14cm in diameter

Price: R150 for the set

Trio of Meakin Jugs – SOLD

27 Jan

Trio of J&G Meakin jugs

Trio of J&G Meakin jugs

I was so lucky to find this set of J&G Meakin jugs! I bought two of them from a lovely elderly lady in Durban North, and the very next day found the matching smaller jug in Morningside – what are the chances?! The medium sized jug has a bit of wear to the base, and a small patch on the arm of the jug is missing a spot of blue glaze – a mishap during the manufacturing process, but nothing too serious. Given their age, I think they’re doing pretty well – the plain blue pattern ‘Celeste‘ (which is a bit darker than it appears in the photos) was first introduced in 1940, which makes these jugs as old as 75 years!

Note: The jugs aren’t ginormous, so please pay attention to the dimensions below.

Dimensions & Prices:

  • Large jug – R130; 13cm tall x 11cm in diameter
  • Medium jug – R100; 11cm tall x 9.5cm in diameter
  • Small jug – R90; 10.5cm tall x 9cm in diameter /
  • R290 for the set

Wood’s Ware Espresso Cups and Saucers – SOLD

16 Jan

'Beryl' Wood's Ware espresso cups & saucers

‘Beryl’ Wood’s Ware espresso cups & saucers

There’s something so classically beautiful about Wood’s Ware! I love the ridged cups and saucers, and the small detail on the handles, and of course the colour of the glaze, ‘Beryl‘, is just so lovely! The set dates to the 1940s so it’s not surprising that a few of the cups have broken or gone missing along the way – I assume that it would originally have been a set of six, not four.

A fantastic set of coffee cups in near mint condition.

Price: R140 for the set of four

Vintage Waffle Machine – SOLD

2 Dec

Vintage Neumarker waffle machine

Vintage Neumarker waffle machine

I think this has to be the coolest waffle maker that I’ve ever come across! Manufactured by Neumarker (who still make waffle irons today!), I think that it dates to the late 1940s/early 1950s, so for its years it’s not doing too badly at all! We’ve spent hours cleaning it, but it still has some obvious signs of wear, particularly on the inside of the machine where it’s difficult to clean all the crevices. That being said, it’s a super handsome waffle maker – how could anyone resist a waffle in the shape of a heart?!

A beautiful piece of vintage kitchenalia that promises to deliver the most delightful treats!

Note: These machines can sell for as much as $120 with a stove-top version selling for a whopping $160!

Dimensions: 20cm in diameter x 12cm tall

Price: R420
