Retro Wall Mounted Light – SOLD

30 Oct

Vintage wall-mounted light

Vintage wall-mounted light

I bought this 1950s wall-mounted light in my hunt for bedside lamps, but then Justin decided that we should have a light on either side of the bed (makes sense I suppose!), but I really wish it had worked because it’s quite a beautiful light – very Mad Men-esque! There’s some wear to the brass goosenecks, and the salmon pink shades are a bit worse for wear, particularly where they knock into each other, but in the right bedroom (or hall or dining room), I know that it will look fabulous!

Dimensions: 40cm tall (when fully extended); Each shade measures 8cm in diameter

Price: R370

Villeroy and Boch Baking Dish – SOLD

28 Oct

Villeroy & Boch baking dish

Villeroy & Boch baking dish

I think it probably goes without saying that I love the bright yellow glaze on the inside of this Villeroy & Boch baking dish! Bizarrely though, I also quite like the slightly kitsch textured black glaze on the outside of the dish – not only does it contrast beautifully with the yellow, but I think the unusual texture makes for an interesting feature. The dish appears to be in excellent condition for its years – I’m not sure exactly when it was made, but V&B made a pattern called ‘Biarritz’ in the 1950s that had the identical black & yellow colour combo, so it could well be from the same period.

Dimensions: 36cm long x 21cm wide x 5cm deep

P.S. These V&B baking dishes normally sell for around $40 – with our rather sad exchange rate that works out to about R500!

Price: R200

Pair of Midcentury Swedish Pots – SOLD

22 Oct

Midcentury Jie Gantofta pots

Midcentury Jie Gantofta pots

Scandinavian design is world famous and I don’t think I’ve ever come across a Scandi design that I didn’t love, so I was quite surprised when I looked up the work of Swedish company, Jie Ganofta – they’ve made some quite terrifying pieces over the years! Luckily though, they also made some very cool pieces, like this pair of cooking pots! I know they won’t be to everyones taste, but their chunky handles, and retro pattens really appeal to me, plus the colours are quite lovely! From what I’ve read, I’d guess that these pots date to sometime around the late 1950s, which is when the company were focusing on kitchenware. After this date they moved more into ornamental ware, which is when some of their scary designs came into production!

Dimensions: Large pot – 19cm tall x 16cm in diameter (at its widest); Medium pot – 6.5cm tall x 16cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R220 each

Retro Meakin Casserole Dishes – SOLD

14 Oct

Retro Alfred Meakin casserole dishes

Retro J&G Meakin casserole dishes

I love the shape of these retro J&G Meakin casserole dishes! The maker’s mark dates them to between 1954 and 1960, which is very much in keeping with the style of the dishes. I love the retro handles, both on the lids and on the sides of the dishes – such great retro flair! There are quite a few manufacturing defects in the glaze (see pics under ‘more’), and on the yellow dish you can actually see where someone’s touched up the glaze after the fact, although looking at how well it matches, the touch up looks like it was definitely done in the Meakin factory.

A great pair of serving dishes that will hopefully stay together – the colours contrast so beautifully!

Dimensions: Each dish measures 25cm long (incl. handles) x 22cm wide x 10cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R165 each/R300 for the pair

Collection of Kitchenalia – SOLD

30 Sep

Collection of kitchenalia

Collection of kitchenalia

Hopefully there are some serious lovers of kitchenalia out there because you’re going to see a fair bit more of it on Mint than you used to! Previously I would keep a lot of these smaller pieces for the I Heart Market, but with no market to sell at in Jozi I’ll be putting them up for sale on the blog. Some of them are quite curious, like this vintage wood and aluminium cooker – I’ve called it a cooker, because obviously it’s for cooking something, but goodness knows what! Perhaps little grated potato cakes, or round toasted sarmies? I really have no idea! Then there’s the lovely little pyrex dish, which not only has a super cool retro pattern, but also has its lid (a rare find!). The aluminium measuring cups are probably my favourite (despite the fact that I don’t bake!), but the melamine egg cups and pyrex syrup pitcher are also pretty cool! Finally we have the food mould – I’m never sure which ones are for jelly, which for pates and which for cakes, although I think we can cancel out cakes for this mould – it’s just too thin.

A great collection of kitchen bits that will look great on display in your kitchen – and hopefully someone will spot the cooker sitting on your shelf and tell us what it’s for!

P.S. One of our clever Mint peeps, Tania, just pointed out that the ‘cooker’ is actually a crumpet iron! You open it up so that you can do four crumpets at one go. Is Tania super clever or am I just a bit sleepy?!

  • Melamine egg cups – R85 for the set of four; 3cm high x 9cm across SOLD

Holmegaard Selandia Bowl – SOLD

25 Sep

Holmegaard Selandia bowl

Holmegaard Selandia bowl

Designed in 1957 by Per Lütken for Holmegaard the ‘Selandia‘ dish is the epitome of minimalist Scandinavian design. The simplicity of the design means that it’s relatively easy to overlook at first glance, but when you look at the fluidity of the shape – the way the glass is almost suspended – you begin to understand the brilliance of Per Lütken, the master of Danish glass design. This mauve version of the Selandia dish is unsigned and has some very small fleabite chips along its base, but it’s unmistakeable as a piece of Holmegaard, one of my very favourite Scandi design houses.

A lovely piece of glass that would make a wonderful addition to someone’s collection.

P.S. The Selandia dish was put back into production by Holmegaard in 2011 and retails for $285. Vintage Selandia bowls sell for around the $100 mark.

Dimensions: 26cm long x 19cm wide x 9.5cm deep

Price: R300
