Japanese Pavlova Plate – SOLD

8 Dec

Japanese pavlova plate

Japanese pavlova plate

Have I ever mentioned how much I love pavlova? Well, I really do! I especially love the pavlova made by my best friend’s mom, Helen – she does a killer pavlova with the most beautiful fruits. It’s a serious work of art! I wonder what Helen would make of the recipe that’s printed on this pavlova plate – such a nice detail! And how great is that 1960s floral pattern? There’s an orange version of this plate, but I think this blue is so much prettier!

A delightful bit of Japanese kitchenalia in tip-top condition!

Dimensions: 31cm in diameter

Price: R130

Pair of Vintage Flasks – SOLD

Pair of vintage flasks

Pair of vintage flasks

How pretty are these vintage flasks? So much prettier than the thermoses you can buy today! I love the blue and gold aluminium, and the pale bluey-green lid on the gold thermos that of course doubles as a cup. Given their age – I’d guess that that they date to sometime in the 1950s/’60s – it’s not surprising that there are some signs of wear & tear, although on the whole I think that they’re pretty clean. The most noticeable wear is to the stoppers, but luckily you don’t see the wear until you remove the lids.

A fun, but functional pair of flasks just perfect for a summer picnic!

Dimensions: Blue flask – 27cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter; Gold flask – 25.5cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter

Price: R130 each

Retro Melamine Part Dinner Service – SOLD

7 Dec

Retro Eileen melamine part-dinner service

Retro Eileen melamine part-dinner service

While most of us think of plastic crockery as being best suited for camping, there was a time in the 1950s when it nearly overtook conventional ceramics in people’s kitchens, but by the late ’60s things had returned to normal, and melamine designs became more targeted for the outdoor market. But because of this melamine craze in the ’50s, you see these beautiful sets of melamine dinner services that were clearly designed for more than just camping trips! Just look at the beautiful detail on the cup handles – way too pretty for a caravan holiday! That being said if you are into the outdoors why shouldn’t you drink your tea out of a pretty cup? The bowls and plates would also be great for families with young kids – while melamine can break, it’s still way more hardy than traditional crockery!

Note: The set is in decent condition of its years, but the plates do have some fine scratches that are visible if you’re looking for them, and someone (not me!) has scratched the centres of the plates and bowls trying to remove old price stickers.

Dimensions: Dinner plates – 25.5cm in diameter; Bowls – 4cm deep x 13.5cm in diameter; Cups – 7cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Saucers – 15cm in diameter

Price: R295 for the set (16 pieces in total)

Retro Flower Power Tray – SOLD

30 Nov

Retro Worcester Ware tray

Retro Worcester Ware tray

If I hadn’t recently read about Worcester Ware when I was researching those oriental placemats a few weeks back, I might have thought that this metal drinks tray was new – it’s in such good nick that it could easily pass as a modern piece! But when I saw the label on the back of this crazy flower-power tray I immediately recognised the name. I suppose the design of the label is also a bit of a giveaway and there are some scratches on the underside of the tray, but it definitely doesn’t look like it’s anywhere near 50 years old, which is how old I think it probably is!

Dimensions: 30cm in diameter x 3.5cm deep

Price: R140

J&G Meakin Side Plates – SOLD

23 Nov

J&G Meakin side plates

J&G Meakin side plates

You don’t get more ’60s flower-power than this set of J&G Meakin side plates! I just love that bold pattern, and the pinks that they’ve used in the design are so pretty! The pattern is called ‘Filigree‘ and was designed in 1969. For the most part the plates are in good nick for their years, but there are a few scratches here and there – nothing too serious though.

A lovely set of retro side plates for the next time you have the girls (or boys) over for tea and cake!

Dimensions: Each plate measures 18cm in diameter

Price: R140 for the set of six

Eetrite Moderna Carving Set – SOLD

17 Nov

Eetrite Moderna carving set

Eetrite Moderna carving set

The Eetrite Moderna pattern is probably my very favourite design when it comes to retro cutlery! I love the combination of the black bakelite and the silver of the stainless steel – it gives such a modern impression, which I suppose was the idea when the design first introduced in the 1960s. Moderna sets are pretty hard to come by, especially complete sets, and I’m not sure that I’ve ever been lucky enough to find a carving set before? It’s probably difficult to tell from the photos, but these are quite large and impressive pieces, particularly the knives which measure nearly 40cm long! I’m a bit confused as to why there’s a bread knife as part of the set, although I suppose it would come in handy if you have rolls or a nice loaf of home-made bread on the side, and you could always use it for cutting meat as well.

P.S. Moderna cutlery sets can fetch some very high prices – a cake lifter with matching forks is selling online for a whopping $65!

Dimensions: Each knife measures approx. 39cm long x 2.5cm wide; Fork measures approx. 30cm long x 3cm wide

Price: R350 for the set
