Alfred Meakin Gravy Boat – SOLD

17 Dec

Alfred Meakin gravy boat

Alfred Meakin gravy boat

I’m not sure how well it comes across in the photos, but this Alfred Meakin gravy boat is the most delightful yellow! And I love the shape of that handle! Sadly there are a few marks on the inside of the gravy boat, and the underside is also quite stained, but fortunately you won’t really notice that, and the marks on the inside aren’t terribly obvious and should be mostly covered when it’s fill of deliciously rich gravy for your Christmas gammon!

Dimensions: Gravy boat  – 21cm long x 10cm wide x 9cm tall; Gravy dish – 21.5cm long x 15cm wide

Price: R130

Alfred Meakin Part Coffee Set – SOLD

17 Jul

Alfred Meakin teapot & teacups

Alfred Meakin coffee pot & cups

I’m not certain whether this is a coffee or a tea set, I suppose the shape could lend itself to either really, but what I do know is how much I love it!! Isn’t it just delightful? The colours are great (particularly that blue!), and the coffee pot has a great shape to it – the spout is slightly angled, which makes it stand out from your classic coffee pot design.

A very attractive set that would make a nice addition to an eclectic crockery service.

Dimensions: Coffee pot – 18cm tall x 10cm in diameter; Cups – 6cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter; Saucers – 12cm in diameter

Price: R250

Retro Meakin Casserole Dishes – SOLD

25 Jun

Pair of Alfred Meakin 'Glo-White' casserole dishes

Pair of Alfred Meakin ‘Glo-White’ casserole dishes

I think these casserole dishes might be some of the nicest pieces that I’ve seen from Alfred Meakin, and it’s not like I’m not a Meakin fan! The bowls are obviosly very simple, but the pattern on the lids is just outstanding! I love the dark blue glaze, and that raised zigzag pattern’s a real winner!

Note: There are some minor marks on the inside of the one bowl (see pics under ‘more’), but otherwise both dishes are in excellent condition.

Dimensions: Each dish measures 11cm tall (with lids on) x 20cm in diameter

Price: R180 each

Meakin Vegetable Dish – SOLD

29 Apr

Alfred Meakin 'Primrose' vegetable dish

Alfred Meakin ‘Primrose’ vegetable dish

I don’t think that I’ll ever tire of this beautiful pastel yellow glaze that’s so reminiscent of the ’50s and ’60s! As is the shape of this dish – isn’t it so lovely? There’re some light marks on the rim of the lid, and on the underside of the dish, but luckily the wear is mostly hidden from sight.

A very fashionable dish that will look wonderful sitting on your dining room table filled with some delicious honey-glazed carrots!

Dimensions: 20cm in diameter x 13cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R140

Meakin Teacups, Saucers and Side Plates – SOLD

14 Apr

Alfred Meakin teacups, saucers & side plates

Alfred Meakin teacups, saucers & side plates

This is a very sweet set of Alfred Meakin teacups, saucers and side plates, and is in better nick than you’d expect. It’s a strange comment to make, but I think that this set is probably cleaner than it looks – there’s a gold rim around the cups and saucers that’s been purposefully smudged as part of the design, which makes the set look a bit more tired than it actually is. Ironically I think it may have been done as a way of making the set appear ‘vintage’, which now it really is!

A very attractive and practical set – the teacups are a more functional size than vintage cups often are – in excellent nick for its years!

Dimensions: Teacups – 7cm tall x 8.5cm in diameter; Saucers – 14.5cm in diameter; Side plates – 18cm in diameter

Price: R160 for the set (18 pieces in total)

Meakin Breakfast Set – SOLD

30 Mar

Alfred Meakin breakfast set

Alfred Meakin breakfast set

This sweet little Alfred Meakin breakfast set isn’t in quite as good a nick as the Midwinter one that we featured last week, but in a way I prefer it. I really like that pattern! Aren’t the colours so lovely? I can’t seem to find the pattern name, but I’d guess that it dates to around the 1960s, which explains the amount of wear to the gold trim. There’s also some stained crazing around the base of the teapot, but no real damage per se. As with the Midwinter set, the teapot, milk jug & sugar bowl are all much smaller than you’d expect them to be, which makes them extra sweet, but it also means that this really is tea for two – no second helpings and no visitors popping round!

Dimensions: Teapot – 10cm tall x 11cm in diameter; Milk jug – 6.5cm tall x 8.5cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 4.5cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Cups – 7cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Saucers – 14.5cm in diameter

Price: R220 for the set
