Retro Arabia Ashtray – SOLD

Arabia Finland ashtray by Kaj Franck

Arabia Finland ashtray by Kaj Franck

This is the first time that I’ve come across this Arabia ashtray in green glass. I see them for sale now and again, but all the versions I’ve ever seen have been clear glass, and I have to say I think the green makes it a much more interesting piece! In typical Scandinavian style this ashtray is a very simple design, but as beautiful as its simplicity is, the colour adds another dimension of interest. Not that I should criticise anything designed by Arabia, let alone by Kaj Franck who was responsible for designing this ‘Cigaro‘ ashtray. Some sites state that the ashtray was originally designed for Nuutajärvi (owned by the same holding company as Arabia) in the mid 1950s, and others that it was manufactured for Arabia in the late ’60s. I suppose it’s possible that it was made under both names at different times? Regardless it;s a very handsome chunk of glass that would make a great addition to a mid-century collection.

Note: There is a very small fleabite chip on the one corner, but it really is barely noticeable. The glass is also a darker green than it appears in the photographs.

Dimensions: 10cm long x 8.5cm wide x 6.5cm tall

Price: R230

1960s Arabia Salt Box – SOLD

1 Jul

Small Arabia wall planter

Arabia salt box

When I first spotted this piece of Arabia pottery I assumed that it was a small wall planter – the holes made it clear that it was meant to hang on the wall, but I must admit I was confused as to why there were no holes for drainage. It turns out that my little planter is actually a salt box, and that originally it would have had a wooden lid that pivoted to allow easy access to your salt – what a clever design! Sadly the lid is missing, but I think it would be easy enough to add. Another option would be to use the box for storing sponges next to your sink, or if you’re very brave you could always drill a hole in the bottom and turn my imagined planter into the real thing!

Note: Even without lids these Arabia salt boxes sell for around $100!

Dimensions: 17.5cm wide x 9cm deep x 13cm tall

Price: R250

1950s Scandi Teapot – SOLD

Arabia Finland teapot

Arabia Finland teapot

I couldn’t make out the maker’s mark on this teapot when I bought it (there is one, but it’s very, very faint), but I knew that there was something special about it. The simplicity of the design, with the understated matte glaze and the cane handle means, that you could easily overlook it, but really it’s its plainness that makes it so attractive – and timeless. This teapot was designed in 1953 by Ulla Procope for Arabia, Finland, making the design more than 60 years old! Arabia continued to produce the teapot for a good few years after that date though, so I’m not sure exactly how old this particular teapot is, but it’s in excellent condition, with the only real sign of wear being to the cane handle.

A very attractive and super collectible teapot that would look wonderful on display in a modern kitchen.

Note: This is a relatively small teapot – please pay attention to the dimensions below.

Dimensions: 11.5cm tall (excl. handle) x 11cm in diameter; 16.5cm tall incl. handle

Price: R200

Retro Enamel Roasting Dish – SOLD

6 May

Large enamel roasting dish

Large enamel roasting dish

This is without a doubt the most handsome roasting dish I’ve ever seen. It’s really not an exaggeration when I say I went weak at the knees when I spotted it – it was like I had found my true love (sorry Justin!). It really is that fantastic! Aside from its dashing good looks – bright red enamel with that beautifully sleek retro handle – it’s also a very good quality piece of cookware in excellent condition. If there weren’t a few dings in the enamel I’d be inclined to think that it had never been used before – the base is practically spotless. And on top of all of that it’s also a really nice size – large enough to do a serious roast – provided you have a big enough oven (a lot of modern ovens are rather puny!).

I think it goes without saying that if I spent any time in the kitchen (at all!) I’d be hanging onto this one – I’m already jealous of whoever its new owner is going to be!

Note: There’s no maker’s mark, but I’ve found identical dishes online that are advertised as Finel selling for around R1300.

Dimensions: 45cm long x 30cm wide x 17cm tall (incl. lid)

Price: R790

Pair of Arabia Finland Ashtrays – SOLD

Pair of Arabia Finland ashtrays

Pair of Arabia Finland ashtrays

This pair of Arabia Finland ashtrays are quite plain, although they have a nice simple style to them. What’s great about them though is that they’re in their original packaging. The plastic covers are a bit tired looking, but at least they’ve kept the ashtrays inside in mint condition – the one even has it’s original Arabia sticker!

Dimensions: Each ashtray measures 3cm tall x 8cm in diameter

Price: R65 each

Retro Finnish Percolator – SOLD

1 Aug

Finel coffee percolator

Finel coffee percolator

It’s been years since I’ve been lucky enough to come across one of these Arabia Finel coffee percolators! I think the last time I sold one was nearly four years ago, right at the beginning of Mint, when I had never heard of Arabia and didn’t have a clue what it was that I was selling! I knew that I liked it (a lot!), but had no idea how collectible Scandi designs are, and in particular this 1950s coffee percolator by Finnish designer Antti Nurmesniemi, which seems to make people go nuts (or at least pay crazy prices). And this is a lovely example in near mint condition, plus it’s bright red which never hurts matters!

Probably one of the coolest coffee percolators that you can buy. I would so love to add to this to our collection of coffee pots, but alas there are no spots left on the stove!

Note: This coffee pot comes in two sizes – this is the smaller of the sizes so please pay attention to the dimensions below.

Dimensions: 15cm tall x 11cm in diameter

Price: R360
