Arabia Kitchen Canisters – SOLD

Arabia Finland kitchen canisters

Arabia Finland kitchen canisters

Sometimes it really is very difficult to contain my excitement! Like when I spotted these Arabia Finland kitchen canisters – as a dealer you have to have a bit of a poker face, but when your heart’s going boom boom boom it can be quite hard! Designed in the 1970s by Richard Lindh, these canisters seem to be fairly rare, with very few of them for sale online, and the ones that are selling for a hefty price! This set seems to be in pretty good nick for its years, although there is some minor damage to the one canister, and the one seal seems a bit loose. There’s also no legible maker’s mark on the bases, but I know for certain that they are Arabia because there were other damaged canisters for sale at the same shop with a clear Arabia stamp.

A great set for a collector of Scandinavian design. You would be surprised at how good something so simple can look sitting on your kitchen counter!

Dimensions: Tall canisters – 20cm tall x 9.5cm wide; Short canister – 13cm tall x 9.5cm in diameter

Price: R350 for the set

Arabia Finland Napkin Rings – SOLD

27 Nov

Arabia Finland napkin rings

Arabia Finland napkin rings

These ceramic serviette rings definitely aren’t my favourite design from Arabia Finland, but if you’re a lover of this Finnish design house then napkin rings would make a great addition to your collection – they’re not really something that you see everyday. There’s a bit of wear to the edges which isn’t visible in the photos, but it’s not that noticeable that it would put you off the set.

A plain, but rather unusual set that would make an Arabia collector very happy indeed.

Dimensions: Each napkin ring measures 4.5cm in diameter x 3.5cm tall

Price: R170 for the set of 6

Vintage Finnish Pot – SOLD

16 Oct

Vintage cherry Finel pot

Vintage cherry Finel pot

I just love this ‘stock pot’ from Arabia Finland! There’s some obvious wear to the enamel, but the inside is still clean enough to cook with, and the wear to the outside doesn’t detract too much from that fabulous cherry design! A lot of the designs for this particular style of pot seem to have been done by Kaj Franck, but I can’t seem to find this cherry version for sale anywhere, so I’m not certain who’s responsible for the fantastic pattern!

A great piece of cookware from one of Finland’s most famous design exports. We should all be so lucky as to have such a cheerful pot in our kitchen cupboard!

Dimensions: 13cm tall x 19cm in diameter

Price: R250

Pair of Small Arabia Finland Tiles – SOLD

Small Arabia Finland 'his & hers' wall tiles

Small Arabia Finland ‘his & hers’ wall tiles by Gunvor Olin Grongvist

Maybe I’m just having an off-day, but these small wall tiles from Arabia Finland have to be one of the most difficult items I’ve ever tried to research! Aside from one pair that were sold on Etsy, there’s absolutely no evidence of these little plaques online, so I think it’s safe to assume that they’re fairly rare. The person who sold them to me said that they were signs for a boy and girl’s toilet – a nice idea, although not that practical in a home setting. Personally I think they’d look great displayed on a wall, outside of the context of a ‘his and hers’. There’s a small chip on the underside of the one tile, but otherwise they’re fairly clean – I’m not sure of their exact age, but they’ve got to be at least 40-50 years old. A real bit of treasure for all the Arabia collectors out there!

Dimensions: Each tile measures 9.5cm tall x 4.5cm wide x 0.5cm deep

Price: R140 for the pair

Retro Arabia Origami Dish – SOLD

23 Aug

This glossy black glaze is often associated with bad ’80s crockery, but when I looked at the style of this piece, I knew that it was anything but! And turning it over I saw a scratched and faded, but legible, Arabia of Finland stamp, and my heart did a little dance! Designed in the 1960s by Kaj Frank, the head of design for Arabia, this serving platter formed part of his aptly named Origami range. The cleverly designed geometric mould forms four cups in which to place your chopped carrots, mange tout, dipping sauces – anything you want really! It truly is a great design. And because it’s so beautiful and it’s Arabia and it’s Kaj Frank, these dishes sell for an arm and a leg, going for anything from $50 up to a couple of hundred dollars, with several for sale around the $100 mark. Unfortunately though this platter’s not in mint condition. There’s no real damage, but the glaze is a bit scratched (although not noticeably so). The most obvious wear is ironically around the maker’s stamp, which it looks like someone’s tried to scratch off! But even with the wear and tear it’s still a very cool piece and one that’s sure to prove very useful.

Dimensions: 31cm long x 25cm wide x 4cm deep

Price: R190

Small Arabia Finland Serving Dish – SOLD

3 May

Serving dish with Pastoraali print by Esteri Tomula for Arabia Finland

Serving dish with Pastoraali print by Esteri Tomula for Arabia Finland

I was going to suggest that this small serving dish by Arabia Finland could double-up as an ashtray, but that was until I read one site where the woman said that she cried when she saw someone ashing in this dish! Plus when you have a look at the crazy prices that these pieces go for, you kind of understand why you wouldn’t want to put your stompies out in them! Designed in the 1960s by Esteri Tomula for Arabia Finland, pieces belonging to the Pastoraali collection go for anything from 90 to 200 Euros – absolute madness! That being said, the design really is quite special, and any pieces by Arabia are considered highly collectible, especially at the moment when Scandinavian design is almost considered high art. There are some minor scratches to the print, but they’re not particularly noticeable, unless you’re looking for them. A fantastic investment piece of retro Finnish pottery in great condition!

Dimensions: 20cm wide x 20cm long x 3cm deep

Price: R220
