Susie Cooper Set – SOLD

2 Dec

A Susie Cooper part tea set

A Susie Cooper part tea set

I wouldn’t ordinarily buy a set that was so incomplete, but Susie Cooper pieces are fairly hard to come by these days, and when I do come across them they’re normally selling for prices way beyond my reach! Plus this is such a pretty set that I’m sure someone out there would be happy to add this to their collection of vintage cups and saucers! The set, which dates to sometime between 1932 and 1964, consists of an espresso cup and saucer, a milk jug and sugar bowl, and a larger jug which would also work as a milk jug or creamer, but I suspect might actually be a gravy boat. All of the pieces are in great condition for their age, but the larger jug des have some crazing which is a bit stained (see pics under ‘more’), but it’s not so bad that it’s the first thing you notice – what you notice is the beautiful ‘Kestrel’ shape of the milk jug a the delightful faded green glaze.

A wonderful set from one of the 20th Century’s most respected female designers.

Dimensions: Cup – 6cm tall x 6.5cm in diameter; Saucer – 12cm in diameter; Small jug – 7cm tall x 7cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 4.5cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Large jug – 8cm tall x 11.5cm in diameter

Price: R180 for the set

Stainless Steel Jug – SOLD

10 Nov

Stainless steel jug

Stainless steel jug

This water jug has a definite art deco feel to it, but unusually it’s made of stainless steel – not a material that you’d expect for something from the art deco era. Typically a deco jug would be made of chrome or silver-plate, so I’m not convinced that the jug has any real age to it, but it’s still a lovely design and large enough to be able to use at your dinner table – you could probably get a good five or six glasses of water out of it.

A stylish water jug in excellent condition.

Dimensions: 21cm tall x 13cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R160

Art Deco Flip Toaster – SOLD

Art deco flip toaster

Art deco flip toaster

It’s a good day for art deco! The metal on this vintage flip toaster isn’t quite of the quality that you’d expect of a deco piece, but it’s definitely in the art deco style, and looking at the cabling and the way that it’s been made, it’s easy to see that it’s not a reproduction. I actually had an identical version of this toaster for sale a month or two back – this toaster’s in ever-so-slightly worse nick than that toaster, but it’s still very clean for its age.

A great looking appliance that will do a fine job of toasting your day old chelsea buns!

Dimensions: 17cm tall x 17.5cm wide x 11cm deep

Wood’s Ware Coffee Pot – SOLD

2 Nov

Beryl Wood's Ware coffee pot

Beryl Wood’s Ware coffee pot

I think that Wood’s Ware must be one of the most timeless designs – looking at this beautiful coffee pot you’d never guess that it was first produced in the 1940s! Aside from the fact that it’s in near mint condition, the simplicity of the shape with nothing but a few lines for decoration, could so easily have been designed today. Wood’s manufactured this same design in a variety of different coloured glazes, with this pale green earthenware glaze being called ‘Beryl‘.

A great piece of art deco design inspired by the the austerity measures introduced during the war years – necessity, the mother of all inventions!

Dimensions: 19cm tall x 10cm in diameter

Price: R165

Art Deco Cigarette Dispenser – SOLD

2 Nov

Art deco cigarette holder

Art deco cigarette holder

This art deco cigarette holder heralds from a time when smoking was much more fashionable, so much so that people bought beautiful cases, boxes and holders to store their cigarettes in! This is one of the more simply designed cigarette dispensers that I’ve seen – normally they’re spring-loaded or have some other mechanism so that as soon as you remove the lid the ciggies pop up, but with this design you simply take off the lid and your cigarettes are all neatly lined up – a bit like one of those great Crayola towers we had when we were kids!

They may not be that PC these days, but if you are tempted by the occasional cigarette when you’re entertaining, how much nicer to be able to offer your guests a cigarette presented in this delightful dispenser than a plain old cardboard box!

Note: The bakelite base is in good condition, and the chrome cover has only very minimal wear.

Dimensions: 14.5cm tall x 10.5cm in diameter

Price: R220

Art Deco Dressing Table – SOLD

Art deco dressing table

Art deco dressing table

Some friends of mine are moving house and need to sell a few pieces, so all of the items that we’re featuring on Mint today belong to them – the lovely Nathan & Levinia! Levinia used to run an online store called The New Vintage, hence the reason that her flat is filled to the brim with furniture! This art deco dressing table is one of the pieces from her store, although I don’t think it’s one that she had restored. The mirror has two cracks along its bottom edge, and the silvering has started to fade, so it could probably do with being replaced – although if you’re a fan of vintage mirrors you could always just have it cut shorter and hang it on a wall in a bedroom or a bathroom. The wooden base of the dressing table seems to be in good nick, and is solid wood so even if it could do with a light sand (which I don’t think it does) then it wouldn’t be an issue. Obviously you’d need a bit of space to display a piece like this, but in terms of value for money you’d struggle to find a contemporary dressing table of this quality in this price range!

Please contact Nathan if you have any questions or are interested in buying this art deco dressing table:
