Milk Glass Shaving Mugs – SOLD

22 Sep

Macbeath Evans milk glass shaving mugs

Macbeth-Evans milk glass shaving mugs

I’ve seen one or two of these double-headed horse mugs over the years and have always wondered about them so I’m glad that I’ve now had an excuse to do a bit of research on them. The mugs were made by an American company, Macbeth-Evans, who specialised in fine glassware, but were most famous for their depression-ware glass. These milk glass mugs were designed as shaving mugs, with most sites dating them to the 1930s. The period makes sense to me because the company was taken over by Corning in 1936, and no one seems to refer to the mugs as anything other than Macbeth-Evans. Obviously not many people shave with a brush and blade anymore, but for those few civilised folk out there who do then this is the missing accessory that you’ve been looking for! And for everyone else I think these mugs would make great cups for your bathroom (toothbrush, toothpaste etc), especially if you have a bit of a deco theme going on, but even if you don’t!

Note: the one mug is more of a white than the other, which is a light cream colour (see pics under ‘more’).

Dimensions: Each mug measures 9.5cm tall x 13.6cm wide x 6.5cm in diameter

Price: R110 each

Retro Wall Mounted Light – SOLD

9 Sep

Retro wall mounted light

Retro wall mounted light

This is probably one of the crazier lights that we’ve sold – and we’ve sold some pretty crazy lights over the years! But that doesn’t mean that it’s not super cool, it’s just means that it needs someone brave to find just the right spot for it!

When I first bought it I thought it might be  from the 70s, but another dealer described it as art deco, and once I looked at it again I understood where they were coming from – the way the cut-out wood is set against the chrome backing, and how the whole ‘sculpture’ is suspended from the flat wooden panel that attaches to the wall – there’s something about the design which could very easily be deco. For the most part the light is in good condition, but as so often happens there are specks of white paint on the wood from where people have painted their walls while the light was still hanging. The wood is also slightly worn in places, and there’s some minor pitting to the chrome, but I don’t think any of the wear is going to be particularly noticeable once the light has been installed – all you’re going to notice is that completely mad design!

Dimensions: 39.5cm tall x 25cm wide x 22cm deep

Price: R390

Brass and Cut Glass Hanging Light – SOLD

Brass & cut glass hanging light

Brass & cut glass hanging light

The lights in our home in Joburg left a to to be desired and we put the majority of them on the rubbish heap, but I thought that this light was something quite special. While it’s not to our taste I can still appreciate how beautiful it is – I love the cut-glass inserts and the heavily ornate brass frame. There’s a similar light selling on eBay (for a whopping $290!) that’s described as 1950s Spanish – I don’t think that this light is Spanish, but I think the time period’s about right, if not a bit earlier – a lot of the fittings in our house were art deco. The cord is intertwined with chain, which isn’t that attractive, but I think it needs it for the weight of the light, plus it’s in keeping with the style of the piece.

I really hope that we can find a home for our light – it doesn’t belong in our house anymore, but I know that it will look quite beautiful in the right setting!

Note: We’ve given it a light clean, but it could probably do with a bit of Brasso and some elbow grease!

Dimensions: 21cm wide x 28cm tall/85cm tall with cord

Price: R380

Vintage Margarita Glasses – SOLD

13 May

Art deco margarita glasses

Art deco margarita glasses

This have to be one of the most handsome sets of cocktail glasses that I’ve featured on Mint to date! Aren’t they just beautiful? I love the coloured pink and green stems – the style looks very art deco to me. I seldom come across glasses of this quality in a price range that I can afford, especially ones in such good nick. There are a few fleabite chips, but they’re barely noticeable – for the most part these glasses are in fantastic condition!

A very cool set of margarita glasses that are so pretty you’ll be scared to use them!

Dimensions: Each glass measures 10cm tall x 13cm in diameter

Price: R320 for the set

Berda Coffee Percolator – SOLD

4 May

Vintage Berda coffee percolator

Vintage Berda coffee percolator

This vintage Berda coffee percolator is starting to show its age – the chrome on the base of the pot is quite corroded, and the inside of the coffee pot is a bit patchy, but that doesn’t take away from what a grand coffee pot this is! I love the art deco shape of the handle, and the detail on the glass handle which allows you watch your coffee percolate, is so lovely!

It may be a worse for wear, but I think that this coffee percolator still has a good few years left in it. Regardless of how good a cup of coffee it makes, its good looks alone is worth the money!

Dimensions: 28cm tall x 15cm in diameter

Price: R280

Wooden Art Deco tray – SOLD

23 Apr

Vintage wooden tea tray

Vintage wooden tea tray

I have to say, I think that this tray is quite amazing! Not only is the design pretty unusual, but I think it dates to the art deco period, which makes it in the region of 60-90 years old, depending on whether we’re talking about early or late art deco. There are obviously some scratches to the wood, but no major damage, and it doesn’t look like anything’s ever been repaired. I love the way the sides of the tray are quite separate from the base, and the interaction between the different angled sides makes for some very interesting shapes in the negative spaces.

A very cool tray the likes of which you don’t see for sale very often in SA.

Dimensions: 56cm long x 27cm wide x 4cm deep

Price: R230
