Carlton Ware Salt and Pepper – SOLD

Carlton Ware S&P set

Carlton Ware S&P set

The person I bought these great little Carlton Ware salt and pepper robins from was very proud to show them off – and rightly so, because they really are quite delightful! And they seem to work surprisingly well – most shakers in this design get really easily clogged, but I’ve tried this pair out and they work perfectly well. Sadly there is some very minor damage to the salt cellar (see pics under ‘more’), but the damage really is negligible.

An unusual and quite lovely set that are sure to be the stars of your next dinner party!

Dimensions: Each shaker measures 7cm tall x 5.5cm in diameter

Price: R180

Retro Sugar Bowl and Butter Dish – SOLD

26 Aug

Carlton Ware Wellington sugar bowl and retro cheese dish

Carlton Ware Wellington sugar bowl and retro cheese dish

This retro sugar bowl and butter (cheese?) dish obviously aren’t a pair, but I thought that they looked quite smart together, despite being very different items. The sugar bowl was designed in the early 1970s for Carlton Ware as part of their Wellington range, and is a massive departure from their ott botanical designs. It’s quite badly stained, but it’s such a  strong design that I think this bit of wear can be overlooked! The small cheese dish appears to be a no-name brand, so presumably isn’t of the same quality as the sugar bowl. It’s a lot more naively constructed and also has a bit of stained crazing (although nothing serious), but I do love that crazy retro pattern, and the bright orange glaze certainly makes it stand out!

A very different ‘pair’ that will look great in a clean contemporary environment.

Dimensions: Carlton Ware sugar bowl – 6cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Butter dish – 7cm tall (with lid on) x 18cm long x 9cm wide

Price: R85 each (Butter dish SOLD)

Small Carlton Ware Bowl – SOLD

Small Carlton Ware 'Bleu Royale' bowl

Small Carlton Ware ‘Bleu Royale’ bowl

I wouldn’t ordinarily sell a single bowl, but it’s such a lovely bowl that I thought it was worth showing off – plus you seldom find full sets of Carlton Ware, so it’s a matter of taking what you can! This 1940s bowl formed part of the Royale series, which included the colours red, black, green and this lovely deep blue (Rouge, Noire, Vert & Bleu). The base of the bowl is quite stained, but the rest of it is in pretty good nick for something that’s close to 70 years old. I love the way that the blue graduates from a deep blue-almost-black glaze, to a beautifully textured paler blue. And of course the gold trim is just fantastic! A lovely piece for collectors of Carlton Ware or anyone who appreciates beautiful pottery.

Dimensions:  16cm in diameter x 7cm tall

Price: R120

Carlton Ware Pear Pot – SOLD

8 Jul

Vintage Carlton Ware pear pot

Vintage Carlton Ware pear pot

I’m not quite sure if this small Carlton Ware bowl was designed as a jam pot or a sugar bowl, but I’d be inclined to use it as the latter – not many of us go to the trouble of decanting our jam into pots these days! The maker’s mark that appears on the bottom of the pot was first used by Carlton Ware in 1926, but I suspect that this piece was manufactured a good few years later, perhaps sometime during the late 1940s or early 50s, which would make it in the region of 60 years old. It’s impressive then that it’s in such great condition! A delightful character sugar pot that would make a great gift for collectors of retro pottery and Carlton Ware alike!

Dimensions: 12cm tall x 8m in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R130

Carlton Ware Platter – SOLD

Carlton Ware platter

Carlton Ware platter

This Carlton Ware boomerang dish is in great nick for its age – it dates to sometime between 1958 and 1961, which makes it in the region of 50 years old. There’s a small fleabite mark on the rim, but otherwise it’s a very clean piece. The pattern is called Convolvulus, which is a fancy name for Morning Glory. I love the shape of the platter and the soft graduating lilac colour. A great piece for a collector of this great British ceramic house.

Dimensions: 36cm at its longest x 12cm at its widest

Price: R190

Carlton Ware Sugar Bowl – SOLD

Carlton Ware acorn sugar bowl

Carlton Ware acorn sugar bowl

I’ve never come across a piece of Carlton Ware that looks quite like this – the colours are quite different to what you normally see and for the life of me I can’t find anything else in this shape or pattern by this famous pottery house. That being said it is in keeping with their subject matter which is normally botanical in nature (excuse the unintended pun!). It looks to me like an acorn sitting on an oak leaf. There’s a small chip on the underside of the dish, but other than that it’s in perfect condition. An unusual piece that would make a fine addition to a Carlton Ware collection.

Dimensions: Dish – 14cm long x 10cm wide; Bowl – 8cm high x 7cm wide x 10cm long

Price: R140
