Pair of vintage Consol jars

Pair of vintage Consol jars

My love affair with vintage jars is eons old, so it’s very hard for me to pass one up, even when it’s a bit of a mismatch! If I was a purist I’d have an issue with the fact that this is a Ball lid on top of a Consol jar, but I don’t think that the two look bad together at all, plus the shape and size of the jar make it both visually appealing and nice and practical – a win on both sides!

The small Consol jar is not quite as functional, with a canning lid that comes in two parts, but the shape of this jar is really attractive, and if you don’t want to be bothered with the hassle of the lid just use it to store something that you don’t need regular access to – I use one for storing elastic bands, and it looks great sitting on my office shelf!

Dimensions: Tall Consol jar – 22cm tall x 11cm in diameter; Small Consol jar 10cm tall x 8.5cm in diameter

Price: Tall Consol jar – R110; Small Consol jar – R50

Vintage Glass Jars – SOLD

I’ve recently started storing stationery in clear jars and I can’t tell you how much joy it’s bought me (sad, but true). Everything just looks that much more appealing inside a vintage kitchen jar. My elastic bands that I use to bind the cords on electrical items have gone from boring old yellowy-brown bands to a mini-artwork! I have no idea why, but it really is true! Which got me thinking about all the other obvious uses for jars that we sometimes overlook – like filling them with delicious Christmas treats – and by treats I mean chocolate, and then some more chocolate! Although they would work just as well filled with some home-made mince pies – yes please!

Note: The metal on the Consol lids is a bit corroded (see pics under ‘more’).

Dimensions: Each jar measures approximately 18cm tall x 9cm in diameter

Price: Ball jar – R110; Consol jars – R95 each

Set of Glass Consol Jars – SOLD

Collection of vintage Consol jars

I’m not sure quite how old these Consol jars are, but they all have glass lids which makes them that much cooler than the modern jars with the metal canning  lids. The smallest of the jars definitely has a bit of age to it (I love its dumpy style!), but I’d say that the other two are relatively new, with the medium sized jar being the most modern of the lot. That being said they’re better value for money than the older jars, and will still look great grouped together.

Note: The one glass insert has a chip along its edge (see pics under ‘more’)

Dimensions: Large 17cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Medium – 14cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Small – 10cm tall x 9cm in diameter

Price: R140 for the set of three

Vintage Consol & Ball jar

Vintage Consol & Ball jar

When I found this vintage Ball jar the other day, Justin said to me that he knew what my opening line for my blog post would be – “I’m super excited to have found this fantastic Ball jar!”. And he was right. Bastard. I really was very happy to find it because just a week or two before I had seen one for sale for the first time. A friend of mine at the I Heart Market was selling it, and I have to say I fell a little bit in love! I would have taken it home with me in a heartbeat, but the lid was a little loose, presumably from where a rubber seal used to sit. But luckily for me, the version I found seems to fit together nice and snug. Woohoo!

The Consol jar is also really nice in that it’s quite a bit larger than most of the Consol jars you see, although I’m assuming that the lid has been replaced at some point – the original lid would probably have been embossed with the Consol logo. But it’s still a great jar and a nice size for storing your muesli.

A great pair of jars – although in my mind there’s a clear winner here. Gotta love that Ball jar!

Dimensions: Consol jar – 22cm tall x 11cm in diameter; Ball jar – 19cm tall x 10cm in diameter

Price: Consol jar – R90; Ball jar – R120

I’ve never before come across the name Kilner, but from the little bit that I’ve read on the company (their website doesn’t seem to be working and there’s not much else out there on their history) it would seem that they claim to be the inventors of this two-part lidded preserve jar. I’m pretty sure that I’ve read info on another company (Ball maybe?) with the same claim to fame, but maybe I’m wrong. Either way, they’re lovely jars and in pretty decent nick. They would originally have had rubber seals for making preserves, but I’d use these jars for storing a variety of dry goods (tea bags, sugar, muesli etc). The only downside to this style of jar is that the loose glass lids are a bit more difficult to handle than  a one piece lid, but that’s a small price to pay for such handsome kitchen jars! There’s a small chip in the glass lid of the one Kilner jar, and one of the Consol lids is slightly dented, but all in all they’re in great condition.

Prices:

  • Set of three Kilner Jars – R160
  • Set of three Consol Jars – R160

Collection of vintage Consol jars

Collection of vintage Consol jars

Anyone who’s been following my blog for a while will know how much I love vintage jars, so you can imagine how excited I was to find this bunch the other day (plus there’re a few more stashed away for a rainy day!). I couldn’t believe my eyes! These days it’s hard to find a single vintage jar, let alone a whole set – plus they’ve become so popular that they fetch stupid prices, so even when I do find them I can’t always buy them, which makes me very sad indeed! What’s nice about finding so many is that someone who wants to start a collection can buy a group of matching jars at one go. I don’t mind mixing and matching my jars at all, but it is rather nice to line up a set that’s the same height on your kitchen counter – they look very attractive! That being said the one medium-sized jar is slightly different to its partners – it has a different glass lid and different markings on the jar itself, but you really wouldn’t notice it unless you were looking for it.

A great find that will hopefully make someone very happy!

Dimensions: Tall Consol jars – 23cm tall x 11cm in diameter; Medium-sized Consol jars – 18cm tall x 9cm in diameter

Prices:

  • Tall Consol jars – R170 for the pair; Medium-sized Consol jars – R180 for the set/OR
  • All five jars – R320 for the set
