Retro Continental coffee cups – SOLD

Retro Continental coffee cups

Retro Continental coffee cups

It’s a real pity that there are only four cups and no saucers, but the pattern on these retro Continental coffee cups is so cool that it makes up for any shortcomings! I just love that crazy orange pattern and the ridged white porcelain. There are some minor signs of wear & tear, but generally speaking these cups are in decent nick for their years.

Dimensions: Each cup measures 7cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter

Price: R110 for the set of four cups

Continental Espresso Cups and Saucers – SOLD

Continental espresso cups & saucers

Continental espresso cups & saucers

I don’t think that these Continental espresso cups have any real age to them – the maker’s mark looks way too modern, and the cups are chunkier than any vintage Continental cups that I’ve come across – but it’s still a very sweet set! The thing that really appealed to me was the pattern on the saucers. It reminds me of a more simplistic version of Susie Cooper’s ‘Wedding Band’. Obviously it’s nowhere near as refined a design, but it’s still very attractive!

Dimensions: Cups – 5cm tall x 6cm in diameter; Saucers – 12cm in diameter

Price: R110 for the set

Continental Coffee Set – SOLD

Retro Continental coffee set

Retro Continental coffee set

What a great set! I love the poppy design on this Continental coffee set, with those great retro shapes – just one look at the sugar bowl and you know that you’re looking at something that dates to around the 1960s. I don’t think that I’ve ever managed to date this ‘modern’ Continental shape, but I’m fairly confident that it can’t be any older than the mid ’60s, and possibly even earlier. Which makes the condition of this set very impressive – bar a missing saucer (there are actually six espresso cups, I just haven’t shown them all), the set is not only complete, but also free of any really wear and tear*.

A wonderfully cheerful coffee set in surprisingly good nick!

*Note: There are one to two scratches on the print (see pics under ‘more’), but nothing too serious.

Dimensions: Coffee pot – 11cm in diameter x 15cm tall (with lid on); Milk jug – 7cm in diameter x 10.5cm tall; Sugar bowl – 8cm in diameter x 7cm tall; Cups – 6cm in diameter x 5.5cm tall; Saucers – 12cm in diameter

Price: R250 for the set (14 pieces in total)

Continental Teacups and Saucers – SOLD

9 Jan

Set of 6 Continental cups & saucers

Set of 6 Continental cups & saucers

I really like the shape of these Continental teacups! As a rule Continental have very simple designs – with the exception of their pastel range, they’re pretty much run of the mill shape-wise. But these cups have a bit more style to them! I also like that terribly kitsch floral pattern – the illustration’s a bit more detailed than you normally see, and the blue and yellow combination is quite lovely to look at! On the downside though, the gold trim is quite worn looking, and there’s a small chip on the underside of one cup (see pics under ‘more’), but they’re not doing too badly given that they’re in the region of forty years old.

A very attractive and well priced set of teacups and saucers that would make an interesting alternative to the sets that you can buy at Mr Price and Boardman!

Dimensions: Cups – 8cm in diameter x 7cm tall; Saucers – 14cm in diameter

Price: R110 for the set

Continental NPA Cups and Saucers – SOLD

NPA Continental tea cups & saucers

NPA Continental tea cups & saucers

These Continental cups and saucers show my age! I was super excited to find the same teacups that my primary school teachers used to have in their ‘staff room’, but when I started talking about them to Noks (who’s 27 years old), I realised that the younger generation won’t have a clue what these are! How depressing! This NPA stamp (I think it stood for ‘Natal Provincial Authority’) is all over memories of my childhood! And aside from the nostalgia factor, I quite like the simplicity of the design – there’s something to be said for the starkness of government branding back in the day!

A great set of teacups and saucers – well at least for those of us old folk who are old enough to remember them!

Dimensions: Cups – 8.5cm in diameter x 5.5cm tall; Saucers – 14.5cm in diameter

Price: R130 for the set

Continental Tea Service – SOLD

6 Oct

Vintage Continental tea set

Vintage Continental tea set

It’s really nice to find such a complete tea service – it doesn’t happen that often! With all six teacups, saucers and side plates, there’s absolutely nothing missing – and nothing damaged! A real win! The pattern might not be that exciting, but I really like the shape of this Continental tea set. I like the flatness of the lid on the teapot and that retro design of the sugar basic and milk jug is really appealing.

A great tea set that you’ll be so glad you bought the next time the girls (or boys) pop round for a cuppa!

Dimensions: Teapot – 13cm tall x 13cm in diameter; Milk jug – 10cm tall x 7cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 6.5cm tall x 9cm in diameter ; Cake plate – 24.5cm in diameter; Teacups – 7cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Saucers – 14.5cm in diameter; Side plates – 18cm in diameter
