Continental Coffee Cups, Saucers and Side Plates – SOLD

Continental coffee cups, saucers & side plates

Continental coffee cups, saucers & side plates

There’s no maker’s mark on this set, but when I bought it it was in its original packaging, which was labeled Continental, so I’m fairly confident that that’s who produced this¬† lovely coffee set, plus I think I’ve actually sold a dinner service in this pattern before and I have a memory of it being Continental.

Having never been used before the set is in immaculate condition, with absolutely no signs of wear. The coffee cups are quite a lot bigger than you normally see with vintage sets, which also makes them that much more practical.

Dimensions: Cups – 8.5cm tall x 7cm in diameter; Saucers – 14cm in diameter; Side plates – 18cm in diameter

Price: R160 for the set

Continental Tea Cups and Saucers – SOLD

Continental teacups & saucers

Continental teacups & saucers

These teacups are stamped Pioneer on their bases, but I bought them in their original packaging which said ‘Continental‘? It’s not something that I’ve researched before, but I’d guess then that Pioneer was a brand of Continental – that would make the most sense…..

Being in their original packaging (which I had to toss because it was a bit grim) this set has obviously never been used before, but that doesn’t mean that they’re in perfect nick – I think that this set was what they call ‘seconds’; i.e. a factory reject that’s then sold on at a lower cost. The pattern is slightly off-centre on a few of the cups, but more noticeable is the one cup, which is quite wonky! I didn’t notice it at first, but when I was taking pisc from above I could clearly see that the cups weren’t perfectly symmetrical – quite funny actually!

Dimensions: Cups – 7cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Saucers – 14cm in diameter

Price: R90 for the set

Continental Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl – SOLD

Continental Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl

Continental Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl

I don’t think that my photos do justice to this lovely Continental milk jug and sugar bowl! It used to be fairly common, but this ’50s style Continental design is fairly hard to come by these days, especially a matching pair in good nick! Aside from the glazes (they come in the most beautiful pastel colours), I think it’s probably the voluptuous shape that’s so attractive – that fat bottom on the milk jug and the way that the sugar bowl is cut away to create a place for your spoon to rest – a really smart and attractive design!

Dimensions: Milk jug – 13cm tall x 9.5cm in diameter; Sugar bowl 6.5cm tall x 9cm in diameter

Price: R150 for the pair

Mint Green Tea Set – SOLD

20 Mar

Waku teapot, sugar bowl & Continental milk jug

Waku teapot, sugar bowl & Continental milk jug

I think that this mint green tea ‘set’ is just beautiful, but sadly it’s not in great nick. For starters, it’s not really a set, although you wouldn’t know it to look at it – the milk jug was made by Continental (South Africa), whereas the sugar pot and teapot were manufactured by Waku Feuerfest Keramik (West Germany). The glazes are so close in colour though, that I don’t think it would be easy to spot the difference. Also I think that they’re definitely from the same era – probably dating to sometime between the 1950s and 1960s – which is another reason they go so well together. In terms of wear the teapot has some stained crazing, both on the inside and outside of the pot, but fortunately the crazing on the outside of the teapot isn’t terribly noticeable. The milk jug and sugar bowl also have some staining, although the wear isn’t very serious. But while the set isn’t in great condition, there are no chips or cracks, so structurally it’s fine – and most importantly it’s so beautiful, and unusual, that I think the wear and tear is pretty easy to ignore!

Dimensions: Teapot – 15cm tall x 12cm in diameter; Milk jug – 10cm tall x 7cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 10.5cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter

Price: R220 for the set

Continental Dinner Service – SOLD

17 Dec

18 Piece Continental dinner service

18 Piece Continental dinner service

It really is quite unusual to find such a complete vintage dinner service! Short of matching casserole dishes and cups and saucers that some larger sets include, this Continental dinner service seems to be all there. With six dinner plates, bowls and side plates you have all the basics, with the bonus of the set being in excellent condition. Bar a bit of crazing, I can’t really see much wrong with this set, and add to that that beautifully delicate pattern, and you have a real winner!

Dimensions: Dinner plates – 24cm in diameter; Side plates – 18cm in diameter; Bowls – 20cm in diameter x 3.5cm deep

Price: R290 for the set

Continental Bowls and Side Plates – SOLD

Set of 4 Continental bowls and side plates

Set of 4 Continental bowls and side plates

Just the other day I was talking about the beautiful pastel glazes that Continental produced during the ’50s and ’60s, and this set of breakfast bowls and side plates is another example of how lovely this range of kitchenware is. Sadly this set’s not in mint condition, with some minor surface scratches and a bit of a discolouring to the underside of the bowls and the plates. The most obvious damage though is a small chip in the glaze on the one bowl, but I can’t quite decide if it’s a chip or a manufacturing defect.¬† But for all the wear and tear this is a still a lovely set that will brighten up your breakfast table – plus Continental is a great South African brand, and it’s always nice to know that things were made close to home!

Dimensions: Bowls – 15cm in diameter x 3.5cm tall; Side plates – 18cm in diameter

Price: R130 for the set of 4 bowls & 4 plates
