Crown Devon casserole dish

Crown Devon casserole dish

How pretty is this casserole dish?! It’s quite funny when you think about it though – it looks to me like the dish has been decorated to look older than it is (or at least older than it was at the time!). The glaze has been purposefully yellowed in places, and that graduating green glaze also gives off an air of antiquity. The irony is of course, that it is really is nearly an antique now! The Crown Devon maker’s mark was in use from the early 1930s to the mid 1960s, but I suspect that this is an earlier rather than a later piece. It’s in good condition on the whole, although there are a few marks along the rim, but no real damage per se.

A very attractive dish with great art deco details.

1940s Royal Commemorative Mugs – SOLD

1940s Crown Devon Royal commemorative mugs

These are probably my favourite design when it comes to commemorative mugs (I know it’s an odd thing to have a favourite of, but it’s true!). I like the fact that the design is raised, and being a South African, anything with a springbok on it is pretty cool! Also I know that the old South African colours carry a lot of meaning, but they also happen to go really well together – maybe not on a flag, but on crockery the combination is quite striking!

Dimensions: Each mug measures 8.5cm tall x 8cm in diameter

Price: R120 each

Crown Devon Lettuce Plate – SOLD

Crown Devon cabbage plate

Crown Devon cabbage plate

This is the sister dish to the first Crown Devon plate that we featured last week, and it’s just as beautiful, although not in quite as good a condition. Fortunately though, the only wear is on the underside of the dish, so isn’t visible unless you pick it up and have a look underneath. Also if you consider its age (the maker’s mark dates to the late 1930s), it’s not doing too badly at all!

A very nice example of a cabbage plate from a very respectable name in porcelain.

Dimensions: 21cm wide x 22cm long x 5.5cm deep

Price: R160

Crown Devon Lettuce Plate – SOLD

Crown Devon lettuce plate

Crown Devon lettuce plate

It’s unusual to find one of these ‘lettuce’ plates in such good nick – I don’t think there’s a scratch on it! Made famous by Carlton Ware these serving plates were all the rage in the ’40s and ’50s, and are becoming increasingly popular once again – although I have to admit that it’s a bit of a niche market, they’re definitely not to everyone’s taste! But if this quirky style does appeal to you, then this Crown Devon dish is a must have! The gentle yellow glaze is quite beautiful and the leaf is much more detailed than you often see.

A striking piece of 1940s* crockery in near mint condition.

* The maker’s mark dates to 1939.

Dimensions: 28cm long x 19cm wide x 5cm tall

Price: R190

Royal Commemorative Mug – SOLD

Crown Devon commemorative mug

Crown Devon commemorative mug

I love commemorative paraphernalia – it’s so much easier to find out the history of something when it’s so clearly dated! Although, truth be told, I’m not a massive fan of Royal family collectibles, but there are a few pieces that I really enjoy, and this Crown Devon mug commemorating the visit of George VI and Queen Elizabeth to South Africa in 1947 is definitely one of them! It may not be very PC to admit it, but I like the use of the old SA colours (blue and orange happen to work really well together!), and the springbok on the back of the mug is a really nice touch. I also love the way old George and his queen appear in relief – it’s a nice detail. My English grandmother (who, like a lot of the English, had a real love affair with the Royal family) would probably have been horrified at the suggestion, but I think that these commemorative mugs make great toothbrush holders for the bathroom! They’re the perfect vessels for a tube of toothpaste and an old-school manual toothbrush, and they’ll add a bit of humour and interest to your decor.

1930s Wall Hanging – SOLD

Crown Devon George of the River wall plaque

Crown Devon George of the River wall plaque

Designed in the 1930s for Crown Devon as part of a series of nine ‘Champion’ dogs, this Dalmation wall plaque really is quite something! For starters, he’s in fantastic condition for a piece of pottery that’s in the region of 80 years old, with the most beautiful glazed finish. Then there’s the art work, which is of a very high standard – just look at the detail in that eye, and finally there’s the fact that old George sells for a small fortune: there are a few for sale on ebay and they seem to range from 50 quid all the way though to a massive 100 pounds!

Dimensions: 17cm wide x 17cm tall x 8cm deep

Price: R290
