Blue Fire-King Snack Dish – SOLD

15 Apr

Blue Fire-King snack dish

Blue Fire-King snack dish

How terribly kitsch is this Fire-King snack dish? Personally I think it’s great, and I just love the blue glass, but if I didn’t know the make (and if I hadn’t researched it before) I’d be very surprised to find out that it came from Mid-century America – it looks far more Eastern to me! Although that being said I do have some vague memory of seeing a similar piece in some ’50s styled movie…..

The gold trim is slightly worn, but even that’s not in terrible nick, and the glass itself seems to be completely free from wear. A wonderfully over-the-top relish dish that will make the ideal serving plate for some crunchy crudites and home-made dip.

Dimensions: 28cm long x 19cm wide x 3.5cm high

Price: R130

Jadeite Fire King Salad Plates – SOLD

5 Sep

Stack of Fire King Jadeite plates

Stack of Fire King Jadeite plates

From the bit of research that I did on these Fire King salad plates (they’re a wee bit smaller than dinner plates, but bigger than side plates), it would seem that this particular range of Fire King pyrex was designed for the restaurant industry, which makes complete sense given that I found so many of them! I would have thought that they wouldn’t be quite as valuable, being restaurant-ware, but that logic doesn’t seem to hold water when you look at what these plates sell for online – anything from $17 for a single plate to a whopping $160 for a set of 8! Silly money really. Fortunately all 18 of these plates are in great condition, with no obvious signs of wear. I don’t think too many of us are in the restaurant business, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t take advantage of these hard-wearing plates in our homes! Three beautiful sets of plates that promise to wear will over the years – not quite kid-proof, but close as!

Dimensions: Each plate measures 23cm in diameter

Price: R130 per set of 6

Jadeite Mixing Bowl – SOLD

3 May

Fire-King Jadeite mixing bowl

Fire-King Jadeite mixing bowl

I’ve always loved this milky green glass which was produced by Fire-King from the mid-1940s until 1975 when production stopped. I’m not sure why they stopped manufacturing this pyrexware though, as it’s proved to be the most popular brand under the Fire-King/Anchor Hocking name. This is a lovely example of a Jadeite mixing bowl – it’s in great nick, and while I’m not normally a massive fan of ‘swirls’, the pattern works well here. A handy and charming bowl that you’re sure to get plenty of use out of!

Dimensions: 10cm tall x 20cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R130

Small Pyrex Bowls – SOLD

Set of 3 small pyrex bowls

Set of 3 small pyrex bowls

I actually bought these bowls months apart – it may only be small, but it’s taken me a long time to be able to part with the slightly larger white and yellow Fire-King bowl! When I found the two matching JAJ pyrex bowls I thought that the three would make a nice set so decided it was time I gave up my pretty Fire-King bowl. Not only are they really attractive, but you’d be surprised at how practical this size bowl really is! I have some petite little enamel bowls and my good friend Chris (who used to do a lot of the cooking at my house) used them all the time in the kitchen!

Dimensions: Small JAJ pyrex bowls – 10cm in diameter x 6cm tall; Small Fire-King bowl – 13cm in diameter x 5.5cm tall

Price: R110 for the set of three

Pair of small pyrex bowls

Pair of small pyrex bowls

I wouldn’t ordinarily buy such small pyrex bowls, but I loved the bright colours and the yellow stripe is fairly unusual. Plus I think we forget how handy small bowls can be in the kitchen -a salad for one, dips for a dinner party, storage for left-overs, a brekkie bowl when you haven’t done the dishes – the list is endless!

Dimensions: Yellow Fire-King bowl – 15cm in diameter x 8cm tall ; Red JAJ pyrex bowl – 10cm in diameter x 6.5cm tall

Price: R110 for the pair

Pair of Pyrex Dishes – SOLD

7 Jan

Pair of JAJ pyrex dishes

Pair of pyrex dishes

My brother is a great cook, and has a kitchen full of beautiful enamel and pyrex dishes, roasters, great big cast-iron pots – practically all the bits and bobs you’d ever need. But over the years he’s had a bit of a tendency to buy anything and everything pretty that he saw, whether he needed it or not. So over the holidays he did a bit of a clean out and these two great JAJ pyrex dishes landed on my doorstep – yay! Now neither of them are in what you’d call ‘mint’ (cheeky grin) condition. The yellow dish in particular has quite a few scratches, but I think any wear and tear is more than made up for by those great colours that really do pop! Plus, it’s so unusual to find a pyrex dish with its original lid, especially one with such great style (I love that rounded bubble shape!). A great pair that will look fantastic on a table together – I hope they go to the same home – it would be a real shame to see them parted!

Dimensions: Yellow dish – 11cm tall (with lid on) x 17cm wide x 27cm long; Red dish – 7cm tall x 19cm wide x 28cm long

Price: Yellow dish – R130; Red dish – R90
