Fire King Mixing Jug – SOLD

Fire King Jadeite mixing jug

Fire King Jadeite mixing jug

Jadeite pyrexware is one of my favourite types of pyrex – I just love that colour!! Plus I have a massive soft spot for these vintage mixing jugs that allow you to mix your batter and then pour it straight into you cake mould – no mess no fuss. And if you really wanted to make an unusual cake you could pop the whole thing straight into the oven – pyrex can go from table to oven, and oven to table (although I’m not sure anyone would really want a cake in that shape!).¬† A great example of 1950s kitchenalia. The ideal gift for the baker who has it all.

Dimensions: 10cm tall x 19cm in diameter (at its widest)

I love the simplicity of this 1960s Fire King baking dish. It’s a nice clean piece with the sweetest Summerfield pattern on it. The perfect dish for a small potato bake, or veg lasagne for two.

Vintage Fire King Snack Dish – SOLD

Vintage blue and gold Fire King snack dish

Vintage blue and gold Fire King snack dish

I absolutely love this vintage Fire King snack dish! Isn’t it just fantastic? It’s very kitsch compared to most Fire King pieces you find, which is one of the reasons that I like it so much – it looks something out of modern day India, not 1950s America! The colour is called Azurite, and has a similar look to it as milk glass. The dish is in near perfect condition, with some very minor wear to the base. A lovely piece for any collector of pyrexware.

Dimensions: 28cm long x 19cm wide x 3.5cm high

Price: R140

Jade-ite Fire King Mixing Bowl – SOLD

26 Oct

Green Fire King mixing bowl

Jade-ite Fire King mixing bowl

First introduced by McKee in the 1930s, Jade-ite is a stain and heat-resistant, milky-green glassware. The now very collectible glass was originally sold in American hardware and five-and-dime stores, and given away as promotional items to encourage sales of anything from oatmeal to movie tickets! Anchor-Hocking started manufacturing Jade-ite in the 1940s under their Fire King brand, and the colour proved so popular that they continued production right through to the 1970s. This Jade-ite bowl would originally have been sold as part of a set of four bowls of varying sizes, but I’m yet to find a complete set. The pattern name is Swirl (very imaginative!) and was produced by Fire King from 1949 to 1951. Supposedly it came in a variety of colours, but again I’ve only ever seen the green version. But even by itself, it’s a lovely bowl, and in great condition for its age. The perfect anything-bowl – great for salads, mixing a cake or serving up pasta!

Dimensions: 20cm in diameter x 10cm tall

Price: R110

Set of mixed colour Fire-King coffee mugs

Set of mixed colour Fire-King coffee mugs

I’ve been searching my memory banks, but I don’t think that I’ve ever bought pyrex mugs quite like these. In South Africa pyrex cups aren’t that common, but I do see them from time-to-time. I just don’t think¬†that I’ve ever seen such brightly coloured ones – aren’t they fantastic?! One site dedicated to Fire-King mugs dates the maker’s mark to the 1960s, but later on talks about the stacking cups only being introduced in the ’70s, which is a date I’m more comfortable with – that two-tone olive green has more than a bit of a ’70s vibe to it doesn’t it? There’s some wear to the mugs where the paintwork is a bit scratched, but these were never the most refined of pieces, so a mark here or there isn’t really the end of the world. The perfect mugs for young children (they’re much hardier than their ceramic counterparts) or for anyone who wants to add a bit of fun to their kitchen!

Dimensions: Each mug measures 7.5cm in diameter x 9cm tall

Price: Coloured set – R95 (SOLD); Two-tone green set – R75

Fire King Pyrex Bowl – SOLD

Fire King bowl

Fire King bowl

I came across this pyrexware pattern for the first time a month or two ago, and was absolutely delighted to find it again! It’s one of the sweetest patterns I’ve seen. The bowl is in fair nick – there are some slight scatches in the paintwork and some very minor staining in the glass, but the overall impression is pretty clean.

Dimensions: 19cm in diameter x 10cm high

Price: R95
