Grindley Pudding Bowls – SOLD

Grindley pudding bowls

Grindley pudding bowls

I love the shape of these vintage Grindley bowls – isn’t it just great? It’s such a classic retro design, and so beautiful to look at! The maker’s mark dates to sometime after 1954, which I think is probably around the time that these bowls were produced, or perhaps just a few years later. Bar one or two minor manufacturing defects, the bowls are in great condition for their years, and its fantastic that there’s a full set of eight – while six is more common, having eight bowls is often very handy at dinner parties.

A fantastically retro design in great condition.

Dimensions: Each bowl measures 14.5cm long x 12.5cm wide x 4.5cm deep

Price: R180 for the set of eight

Large Grindley Jug – SOLD

19 Jun

Large vintage Grindley jug

Large vintage Grindley jug

This Grindley jug is the exact match for a breakfast set that I sold a while back, only much larger! In fact it’s quite hard to come across vintage jugs this big – they’re normally about the size of a milk jug, or otherwise made of glass. I’m not sure what it’s meant to be used for – because it looks like an oversized milk jug it’s a bit confusing, but I suppose just because it’s ceramic doesn’t mean that you can’t use it as a water or a juice jug. You could also use it for custard or gravy (if you’re having a seriously large dinner party!), or as a milk jug if you’re hosting the mother of all tea parties!

Dimensions: 14cm tall x 13cm in diameter

Price: R130

Vintage Grindley Casserole Dishes – SOLD

12 May

Pair of vintage Grindley 'Cream Petal' casserole dishes

Pair of vintage Grindley ‘Cream Petal’ casserole dishes

These beautiful Grindley casserole dishes match the equally lovely platter that we featured last week. They’re probably also in pretty much the same nick, with some wear to the gold trim and small areas where the yellow glaze is wearing thin, but on the whole they’re not doing too badly for their years. I love the soft yellow glaze (although it actually looks to be painted on, rather than glazed?) and the detailed handles and lid.

A very sweet pair o veggie dishes that will add a soft touch to the decor at your next dinner party.

Dimensions: Each dish measures 11cm tall (with lid on) x 23cm in diameter

Price: R160 each

Retro Grindley Cake Plates – SOLD

11 May

Retro Grindley side plates

Retro Grindley side plates

These retro Grindley side plates come from the same service as the coffee set that we featured last week, but given that there were only four cups and six side plates it made sense to split the set. Plus I think that sometimes it’s nice not to have everything too matchy-matchy if you know what I mean? The plates are in excellent condition bar one tiny chip, but the damage really is quite minor so I think that it’s fine to continue using the set as is.

A wonderful retro design in the most beautifully muted blues and greens.

Retro Grindley Coffee Set – SOLD

7 May

Retro Grindley coffee set

Retro Grindley coffee set

I wonder what it is about a design that makes it ‘retro’? When people ask me the difference between ‘vintage’ and ‘retro’ I tell them that retro items are generally pieces that were the height of modern in their day – it’s kind of my own made-up definition of the style, but it makes sense in my head, especially when I look at something like this fantastic Grindley coffee set – this wouldn’t have been your run of the mill set of crockery, it definitely would have been super fashionable when it was first produced!

Sadly two of the cups & saucers are missing, and there’s some staining on the base of the cups and the milk jug, but luckily none of the wear’s very noticeable – that crazy retro pattern is what catches your eye! And that’s why we love retro design so much – you can’t help but stare!

Dimensions: Coffee pot – 18cm tall x 12.5cm in diameter; Cups – 8cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter; Saucers –  15cm in diameter; Milk jug – 11cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 12.5cm tall x 9cm in diameter

Price: R350 for the set (11 pieces in total)

Vintage Grindley Platter – SOLD

7 May

Grindley 'Creampetal' platter

Grindley ‘Cream Petal’ platter

This WH Grindley ‘Cream Petal‘ platter has seen better days, but the yellow is so pretty that I think it almost negates the wear and tear! Plus there’s no proper damage, just some scratches to the yellow glaze and one or two marks on the cream body of the platter. There are some more obvious marks on the underside of the dish, but those are a result of the supports used during the firing process. All in all I don’t think that it’s in bad nick for a dish that’s in the region of 60 years old!

Dimensions: 36cm long x 30cm wide

Price: R130
