Grindley Dessert Set – SOLD

Grindley 'Romany Rye' dessert set

Grindley ‘Romany Rye’ dessert set

When I bought this lovely 1950s Grindley dessert set it was complete, and in perfect nick! Such a treat! But then I managed to break one of the bowls (and my heart in the process!). Previously when I had an incomplete set, I would reduce it to a set of four – people always seem to prefer even numbers – but then I thought, wouldn’t you rather have as many plates or bowls as you could? The maker’s mark on the bowls was in use from 1954, and the shape is very much in keeping with that time – I love how fluid it is!

A beautifully retro set that you’re going to get plenty of use out of – these bowls are the perfect size for everything from breakfast cereal to a nice healthy serving of pasta!

Dimensions: Serving bowl – 23cm long x 20cm wide x 8cm deep; dessert bowls – 15cm long x 13cm wide x 5cm deep

Price: R220 for the set

Vintage Grindley Teapot – SOLD

2 Oct

Vintage Grindley teapot

Vintage Grindley teapot

I think by now it’s obvious that I have something of a weakness for yellow, but justifiably so! Look how it takes a rather ordinary teapot to another level – I just love this Grindley teapot with its yellow lid, but to be honest, if the lid was another colour I’m not sure how much I’d like it!

A great little teapot that would be perfect for everyday use.

Note: There’s a minor flaw in the glaze on the lid (a small patch of white), but overall the teapot’s fairly clean for its years.

Dimensions: 14cm tall x 12cm in diameter

Price: R140

1950s Grindley Breakfast Bowls – SOLD

1950s Grindley breakfast bowls

1950s Grindley breakfast bowls

I think these are possibly the nicest bowls that I’ve ever seen – seriously! They were much more than I’d normally pay for a set of bowls, but I think I would have paid nearly anything to get my hands on them! Aren’t they just great?! The colours are so bold, and I really like that rather mad speckled glaze. They also have a great retro shape, and are quite large so you could use them for anything really, not just your morning cornflakes.

A wonderful set of retro bowls that I really, really wish I could justify holding onto!

Note: There are only five bowls, instead of the standard six.

Dimensions: Each bowl measures 16.5cm long x 14cm wide x 6cm deep

Price: R240 for the set of 5 bowls

Pair of Large Vintage Platters – SOLD

Pair of vintage platters

Pair of vintage platters

Another set of platters – can you believe it?! This pair are in slightly better nick than a few of the others that we’ve sold, with the only real damage being on the underside of the platters. The Grindley dish has quite a retro feel to it with that speckled Fernlea pattern, and the Alfred Meakin dish is very sweet with a rather delicate floral design.

A lovely pair of platters that would be perfect for Christmas dinner or other large family gatherings.

Dimensions: Each platter measures approx. 36cm long x 30cm wide

Price: R95 each

Some more platters! Aren’t they just darling! The red dotted platter from Elijah Cotton and the scalloped Grindley platter both have a few marks on them, but they’re still so lovely and definitely worth showing off! Plus these are slightly smaller platters, so you’re sure to get plenty of use out of them – you could use them for serving tasty cakes, crunchy crudites, cold meats, you name it!

Dimensions: Each platter measures approximately 30cm long x 25cm wide

Price: R70 each

Grindley Soup Bowls and Saucers – SOLD

WH Grindley & Co soup bowls & saucers

WH Grindley & Co soup bowls & saucers

I was so excited to find this set of Grindley soup bowls that I failed to notice that two of the saucers are slightly smaller than the rest! Presumably the smaller saucers are from tea or coffee cups, and while it is a bit upsetting I don’t think it’s the end of the world – if your dinner guests are as impressed as I was with this set, they’re not likely to even notice the difference!

The perfect set of crockery for a winter dinner party – now you just have to find the perfect soup recipe to match the bowls!

Dimensions: Bowls – 12cm in diameter x 5.5cm tall; Saucers – 15.5cm in diameter: Saucers (small) – 14.5cm in diameter

Price: R160 for the set
