Art deco Grindley gravy boat

Art deco Grindley gravy boat

This Grindley gravy boat and saucer is the height of art deco – just look at the angles on that handle, and the simple geometric pattern – just wonderful! There’s some slight wear to the silver edging, and a few scratches to the paintwork, but the most part, the set is in great condition.

A classic bit of art deco that wouldn’t have gone amiss on your Christmas dinner table.

Grindley Breakfast Set – SOLD

11 Dec

Peach Petal Grindley breakfast set

Peach Petal Grindley breakfast set

I don’t think many of us are quite civilised enough to entertain something as lovely as this on a daily basis, but wouldn’t it just make your day to be served tea in bed on this lovely Grindley breakfast set now and again? And if you can’t ever see that happening, it would be a delightful way to serve a special guest tea – although they’d have to be so special that you wouldn’t be joining them for a cuppa, seeing as there’s only one setting! But while I’m not sure how practical it is, I do think it’s quite delightful, and aside from some wear to the decoration on the handle it seems to be in pretty good nick.

A special bit of crockery that might serve as a reminder to your partner that everyone deserves tea in bed, even if only now and again!

Note: Please pay attention to the dimensions of the tea cup – it’s more of an espresso sized cup, than an actual tea cup.

Dimensions: Tray – 18cm long x 15cm wide x 2cm tall; Milk jug – 7.5cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter; Cup – 6cm tall x 6cm in diameter; Saucer – 11cm in diameter

Price: R230

Retro Grindley Cups and Saucers – SOLD

Set of 4 Grindley cups, saucers & side plates

Set of 4 Grindley cups, saucers & side plates

Isn’t this retro Grindley set just fantastic?! I know that the pattern is a bit intense, but I really like it, and I’ve always loved this particular shade of blue. Another great feature is the way that the oval side plates contrast with the round saucers – really nice design detail. I can’t seem to find any information on this particular pattern, but the maker’s mark dates to 1954, and looking at the style of the cups and saucers I’d say that that’s probably in keeping with when this set was made.  A great example of retro English ceramics in near mint condition.

Dimensions: Cups – 8cm in diameter x 8cm tall; Saucers – 15cm in diameter; Side plates – 18cm long x 17cm wide

Price: R160 for the set

Grindley Serving Dish – SOLD

17 Jul

Grindley serving dish

Grindley serving dish

The maker’s mark on this Grindley serving dish was used from 1954 onwards, so it’s hard to say exactly what year this dish dates from, but I wouldn’t put it later than the mid-’60s. I bought it for its great shape (aren’t those handles just lovely?), and that wonderful blue glaze. There’s a small bit of wear to the rim of the lid, but it’s barely noticeable, and the rest of the dish in excellent nick. A lovely looking, practical dish that will great on your dinner table.

Dimensions: 20cm wide x 29cm long (incl handles) x 13cm tall

Price: R150

Soup Tureen with Ceramic Ladle – SOLD

2 Feb

Grindley soup tureen with ladle

Grindley soup tureen with ladle

It’s very rare to find tureens with their ceramic ladles still intact, so I was very excited when I came across this set by Grindley that dates sometime between 1936 and 1954. The pattern is called ‘Chameleon’ in reference to the multi-coloured edging that’s so striking. I know it’s completely over the top and definitely won’t be to everyones’ taste, but you have to appreciate it for its bold design – and the combination of the colours really is quite beautiful. It’s a large piece with a heavy price tag (I paid more for this tureen than I normally sell them for!), but it’s a special piece and well worth it. There’s a slight mark on the inside of the bowl, but other than that it’s in perfect condition. A great piece of pottery that’s sure to get your dinner guests’ tongues wagging!

Dimensions: Tureen – 25cm in diameter x 14cm high; Ladle – 24cm long x 10cm in diameter

Price: R390

1960s Grindley Serving Dish – SOLD

1960s Grindley serving dish

1960s Grindley serving dish

This serving dish from Grindley (England) is a bit of an odd piece in that the pattern is very ’60s, but the maker’s mark throws you a bit because it looks so contemporary. Despite looking a bit like a ’90s logo I was convinced that it was a retro piece and was relieved to find out I was right when I found it online. Obviously Grindley was racing into the future when it designed this backstamp! The dish is in excellent nick, with no damage that I can see. I love the matte glaze and the oversized flower pattern. The shape is also fantastic. All-in-all a winning piece!

Dimensions: 19cm in diameter x 12cm high (with lid on)

Price: R150
