Electric Whistling Kettle – SOLD

28 Feb

Pointerware whistling kettle

Pointerware whistling kettle

I know that it’s probably quite an unusual addiction, but I really do have a bit of an obsession with kettles! Poor old Justin has to stop me from bringing every burnt out, well past its sell-by-date kettle home with me. I don’t know what it is, but I find it really hard to walk away from old kettles! But when we spotted this great little whistling kettle the other day, he had to agree with me that it was rather special! First off you hardly ever come across yellow kettles, then there’s the fact that it’s a whistling kettle (always very cool!), and add to that the manufacturer’s logo (you’ve got to love that little dog) and you have an all round winner! If I didn’t have a kettle or two myself (okay maybe more than two!) I’d definitely be holding onto this one.

Dimensions: 20cm tall x 18cm in diameter

Pair of Hendlers Pots – SOLD

Pair of vintage Hendlers pots

Pair of vintage Hendlers pots

I often worry that things look better in photos than they do in real life, but I think that the opposite is true of this pair of Hendlers pots. While there’s obviously some wear, most of the damage is around the rim of the pots which I don’t think will really affect how they cook at all. The lids are pretty solid (as are the pots themselves), so I think that the wear is most likely from the lids being repeatedly plonked onto the pots. Aside from a few scratches the inside of the pots are actually quite clean. I love the blue and yellow combo – the yellow lid is actually a bit lighter than it appears in the pics – and those cheesy roses are fantastic! Hendlers produced quality cookware that was designed to last – I think that these pots have a good many years of life left in them!

Dimensions:  Medium pot – 17cm tall (with lid on) x 19cm in diameter; Small pot 15cm tall (with lid on) x 17cm in diameter

Price: Medium pot – R190; Small pot R140/OR R300 for the pair

Large Hendlers Tea Pot – SOLD

13 Nov

Large H&H teapot

Large H&H teapot

Isn’t the floral pattern on this over-sized teapot just fantastic?! The style of the illustration looks to be 1960s, but based on the colours I’d say that it more likely dates to the early ’70s. It was manufactured by Hendlers & Hart, one of my favourite brands in basic kitchenware, and looks like it was very well used in its time. There’s a fair amount of staining on the inside of the pot, as well as a few scuffs and chips on the outside, but I think that it’s probably still useable – although practically speaking, how often do you need to make tea for 10+ people? I think that I’d re-purpose this teapot as a kettle  – just think how great this pot would look sitting on top of a gas stove!

Dimensions: 22cm tall x 20cm in diameter

Price: R170

Metal Bread Bin – SOLD

19 Jul

Hendlers bread bin

Hendlers bread bin

I try not to buy things that aren’t in good nick, but I couldn’t resist this bright orange bread bin from Hendlers! The outside of the bin has a few patches where the enamel has chipped off, but most of the wear is on the inside of the bin where there’s a dent in the metal – but being on the inside it doesn’t affect the look of the bread bin at all. I bought the bin a few months ago, but have been reluctant to part with it – my own bread bin is a bit rusted, so I was very tempted to steal this one for myself. But as my friend Smile loves to tell me, I run a business and can’t keep all the goodies I lust after. Much sadness. I hope someone enjoys this striking bin as much as I do!

Dimensions: 42.5cm long x17cm high x 24cm deep

Hendlers Pot – SOLD

Hendlers Pot

Hendlers Pot

This is a generously proportioned pot with the most fantastic yellow enamel finish. I think the stylised pattern is meant to be lemon slices – not sure what that has to do with cooking a stew? The inside which is showing signs of age, is finished in a pale blue enamel, and the yellow/blue combination works beautifully. The pot was manufactured by Hendlers, who are part of the SA Hart group. Looking at the base of the pot I’m inclined to think that a portion of the pot is made from cast-iron, but I can’t be certain. Whatever the material it’s a nice solid pot that’s stood the test of time.

Dimensions: 26cm in diameter x 14cm high (with lid on)
