Pyrex Bowl and Dish – SOLD

20 Oct

Small pyrex mixing bowl & lidded dish

Small pyrex mixing bowl & lidded dish

I love this little mixing bowl, but the real star here is the lidded dish! Isn’t it so lovely? It may be a bit on the small side, but the pattern is just fantastic, and for its age it’s in excellent condition! The mixing bowl is equally as lovely, just not as unusual, although it doesn’t have a maker’s mark (you’d expect to see a Hamilton Beach stamp on its base), which I suppose makes it slightly different.

A nice bit of pyrexware in good, clean condition.

Dimensions: Lidded dish – 19cm long (incl. handles) x 16cm wide x 6.5cm tall (with lid on); Mixing bowl – 11.5cm tall x 16cm in diameter

Prices: Lidded dish – R120; Mixing bowl – R85

Daisy Pyrex Dish – SOLD

13 Aug

JAJ Daisy Pyrex dish

JAJ Daisy Pyrex dish

I’m a massive fan of these pastel coloured pyrex dishes, in fact I’d go so far as to say that, with the exception of vintage kettles, they’re probably one of my favourite kitchen items! We have a collection of different coloured and different shaped pyrex bowls of our own, and not only do we use them all the time, but they look so pretty on display! Sadly I don’t have this 1950s Daisy pattern in my collection (I wish I did), and none of my dishes have lids, but I can’t justify holding onto this one – I have too many already, and I’m not prepared to part with any of mine!

Note: Both the dish and the lid have some wear – see pics under ‘more’.

Dimensions: 30cm long x 17cm wide x 7.5cm high (with lid on)/4.5cm without lid

Price: R130

Note: Mint puts up three new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog (more…)

JAJ Pyrex Gravy Boat – SOLD

30 Jun

JAJ Pyrex gravy boat

JAJ Pyrex gravy boat

While I can definitely appreciate the beauty of a fine piece of china, my personal taste is a bit more rugged, preferring pyrex over porcelain! And this JAJ Pyrex gravy boat with matching saucer is a great example of why I love pyrexware so much! For one it’s generally much more durable and hardwearing than porcelain, and secondly, and most importantly, the patterns are generally much funkier! with its stylised pattern and bright orange and blue flowers, this gravy boat is right up my street!

Note: There’s a minor mark near the spout, but otherwise the jug and saucer are both in great condition.

Dimensions: Gravy boat – 19cm long x 8.5cm wide x 7cm tall; Saucer – 20cm long x 15cm wide

Price: R125

Daisy Pyrex Dish – SOLD

30 Apr

 JAJ Pyrex 'Daisy' dish

JAJ Pyrex ‘Daisy’ dish

This is probably one of the more expensive pyrex dish that I’ve sold, but they’ve become so popular in recent years that they really are hard to come by – especially this 1950s daisy patten, which was pretty rare to begin with! The dish is in good condition for its age, but there’s some staining on the underside of the one handle that we can’t seem to get rid of (see pics under ‘more’). It’s nothing major though – in fact you can’t see it unless you pick the dish up and look underneath – not advisable once it’s filled with some freshly cooked veggies!

Dimensions: 29cm long (incl. handles) x 18cm wide x 9.5cm tall (incl. lid)

Price: R160

JAJ Pyrex Dishes – SOLD

Pair of JAJ pyrex dishes

Pair of JAJ pyrex dishes

I probably should have walked away from this pink JAJ Pyrex dish, but they’re so hard to come by these days that I thought that it was worth trying to save. You see it was in need of a serious scrub – the type of scrub that takes you a good day or two to do (soak, scrub, soak, scrub!). But even with all of our efforts there are still some signs of wear left over – some of the marks wouldn’t come clean, and others were caused by our scrubbing. It’s definitely clean enough to use now, and when you stack it with other pyrex dishes you don’t really notice the marks, but by itself the wear is definitely visible.

The yellow snowflake dish is the complete opposite – barely a mark on it! It’s not as deep as the daisy dish, but it’s sometimes handy to have smaller dishes for when you’re cooking for less people. We have an assortment of these pyrex dishes in our kitchen and use all of them all of the time – not only are they great for doing veggies in the microwave (or for taking meat off the braai), but they’re a great feature in our kitchen – the different colours and patterns are really striking!

NB: The daisy dish is a much softer pink than it appears in the photos (it almost looks red in the pics, but it’s definitely pink!).

Dimensions: Pink daisy dish – 29cm long (incl. handles) x 17cm wide x 6.5cm deep; Yellow snowflake dish – 29cm long (incl. handles) x 17cm wide x 4.5cm deep

Price: R210 for the pair

JAJ Snowflake Dish – SOLD

14 Oct

Fire-King snowflake dish

JAJ snowflake dish

I know that the last time we featured a piece of pyrexware I wrote about how expensive it’s become, but since then I’ve seen pyrex dishes fetching even higher prices, so I had to express my horror once again! I absolutely love pyrex – it’s probably some of the best looking cookware that you can buy, but I just don’t think that it should cost the earth to buy. A very plain blue pyrex dish recently sold on Bidorbuy for somewhere around R350 – and it didn’t even have a beautiful snowflake pattern on it! Madness!

Note: This JAJ pyrex dish is in excellent condition, with only some very minor marks showing its age.

Dimensions: 32cm long x 21.5cm wide x 5cm deep

Price: R130
