Japanese Soup Bowls – SOLD

9 Oct

Retro Japanese soup bowls

Retro Japanese soup bowls

How cool are these Japanese soup bowls? Such great colours and such fun patterns! The bowls are obviously made by the same company, but it looks like they come from two different sets. Personally I prefer the bowls with the coloured glazes on the inside, but on the whole the set’s quite lovely!

Note: The one bowl has some very small fleabite chips, and the handle on the one bowl has some slight crazing (see pics under ‘more’), but nothing too serious.

Dimensions: Each bowl measures 5cm tall x 10cm in diameter x 14cm long (incl. handle)

Price: R230 for the set

Vacuum Coffee Pot – SOLD

14 Sep

Vintage Hario vacuum coffee maker

Vintage Hario vacuum coffee maker

This probably isn’t the best looking coffee pot I’ve ever come across (personally I’m not the biggest fan of the gold detail), but it is in great condition for its years, and the fact that it’s a vacuum coffee maker immediately makes it more interesting! Plus it’s Japanese (always a win) – Hairo first started making coffee pots in 1921 and are still going strong today (Visit their website to see their contemporary coffee pot designs). A vacuum coffee maker works as a syphon: when the bottom pot heats up it changes the vapour pressure and pushes the water up into the upper vessel where the coffee grinds sit; when the water cools down it falls back down into the lower vessel. Click here to watch a vacuum coffee pot in action!

NB: I think that this coffee pot would be safest used on a gas stove.

Dimensions: 24cm tall x 12cm in diameter

Price: R190

Large Japanese Anglepoise Lamp – SOLD

7 Aug

Retro anglepoise lamp

Retro Yamada-Shomei anglepoise lamp

This Japanese anglepoise is slightly different to your standard desk lamp. For one it’s a bit larger than the anglepoise lamps you normally see, and it’s also made of a lighter material (possibly sprayed aluminium?), but the thing that stands out most is the shade, which has a black outer casing and a white inner sleeve – it makes it quite striking! The lamp has a bit of wear and tear, which is to be expected given its age (it must be at least 30 years old) – the black hood is a bit scratched, and there’s a small patch where the white paint has been rubbed away, but on the whole I think its condition is fair.

A handsome piece of lighting that would look great in your home office.

Dimensions: 99cm tall (when fully extended) x 20cm in diameter

Price: R460

Japanese Bowl Set – SOLD

23 Jun

Retro Japanese bowl set

Retro Japanese bowl set

And if you thought today’s tiger was mad kitsch, what do you make of this crazy set of Japanese bowls?! They’re probably not far off in terms of quality – like the tiger, these bowls are quite chunky and roughly produced, but that doesn’t mean that they’re not bloody fantastic! I love the crazy illustrations, and while they’re not exactly refined, the shape has some serious style to it!

Note: There are some small chips in the glaze, most notably on the large bowl, but overall the condition isn’t bad.

Dimensions: Large bowl – 31cm long x 26cm wide x 9cm tall (at its tallest); Small bowls – 17cm long x 16cm wide x 5.5cm tall (at their tallest)

Price: R265 for the set

Mikasa Cups and Saucers – SOLD

11 Feb

Mikasa cups & saucers

Mikasa cups & saucers

I got very excited when I found these Japanese Mikasa cups and saucers the other day, until I realised that what I thought was the price for the set, was actually per cup and saucer! Darn that eBay- it makes everyone with internet access think that they can sell their goods for the prices that they fetch in Dollars! But after a bit of reasoning with the seller I managed to get the price down a smidgen, enough for me to make a wee profit, and more importantly get to show off these lovely cups! I know that some people won’t understand why I wanted them so badly – the pattern is a bit ’70s kitsch, but I love the Mikasa brand, and while some speckled glazes are just too much, this yellow version hits the spot (well, for me at least). Plus with the exception of one tiny fleabite chip, the set appears to be in very good nick.

Dimensions: Cups – 6cm tall x 8.5cm in diameter; Saucers – 16.5cm in diameter

Price: R150 for the set

Ice Cream Maker – SOLD

22 Jan

Vintage Japanese ice creamer

Vintage Japanese ice creamer

I don’t think that this is the most technologically advanced ice cream maker, but I’ve had a look online and this seems to be a fairly popular design: a cylinder that you pack with ice while your ice cream sits in a tub on the inside, slowly turning. We turned it on and the motor sounds fine, and given that there aren’t too many moving parts I can’t really see anything going wrong with it.

The perfect appliance for entertaining your kids over these sweltering summer weekends – plus you get to reap the benefits of homemade ice cream (seriously, have you ever tried homemade ice cream? It’s delicious!).

Dimensions: 30cm tall x 22cm in diameter

Price: R190
