Retro Coffee Cups and Saucers – SOLD

Retro 'Soraya' cups & saucers

Retro ‘Soraya’ cups & saucers

I bought these retro coffee cups & saucers at the same time as the coffee set that we had for sale last week. It’s the identical pattern, which I’m fairly confident is a Jessie Tait design produced for Midwinter during the early 1960s. For the most part this set is in excellent condition, but one of the cups does have a hairline crack that’s quite badly stained. I thought about reducing it to a set of four, but it seems a waste to throw the cup away when it’s stiill functional – plus if you have it on display, it’s always nice to see a complete set (even if you don’t us the one cup!).

A great bit of ’60s crockery from one of the UK’s top mid-century designers.

Dimensions: Cups – 7cm tall x 6.5cm in diameter; Saucers – 13cm in diameter

Price: R160 for the set

Note: Mint puts up four new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third and fourth at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog (more…)

Retro Coffee Set – SOLD

10 Feb

Retro coffee set

Retro coffee set

I was head-over-heels in love the moment I spotted this coffee set – what lover of retro wouldn’t have been? I snatched it up, took it home and started researching it immediately, but was soon very, very confused! The maker’s mark reads “PE Image 70 Soraya“. From what I’ve read it looks like PE stands for Peter England, which is presumably a pottery manufacturer, but if you google ‘Image 70 Soraya’ you’ll see that Jessie Tait is attached to the design, along with the pottery house, Midwinter. It’s sometimes the case that a popular design is produced by a number of diffferent manufacturers, but all of the items that claim to be Midwinter, designed by Tait, have exactly this same maker’s stamp. I’m flummoxed! To be honest though, it makes complete sense that this is a Jessie Tait design. She was such a talented lady – so many of my favourite mid-century patterns are Jessie Tait creations, and I can so see this mad spider-web design coming from her hand!

A great (albeit very confusing!) coffee set in excellent condition. Bar the absent sugar bowl this set is nearly mint!

Note: I do actually have the sugar bowl, it’s just quite badly stained – although still perfectly functional.

Dimensions: Coffee pot – 24cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Milk jug – 11cm tall x 7cm in diameter; Cups – 7cm tall x 6.5cm in diameter; Saucers – 13cm in diameter

Price: R320

Midwinter Teacups and Saucers – SOLD

12 Nov

Midwinter 'Quite Contrary' teacups & saucers

Midwinter ‘Quite Contrary’ teacups & saucers

These are the final pieces of the fabulous Midwinter ‘Quite Contrary’ dinner service – I think it will be a very long time until I find a set that comes anywhere close to the gloriousness of this service – I’m seriously grateful to have stumbled upon it! These teacups are a fair bit larger than the espresso-styled cups that we sold previously, so you could get a nice big cup of tea out of them! And they appear to be in excellent condition, with very few signs of wear.

I know that we’ve had Midwinter coming out of ears lately, but I don’t think you’ll see another set quite as lovely as this for some time now!

Dimensions: Cups – 7.5cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Saucers – 15cm in diameter

Price: R265 for the set

Note: Mint puts up four new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third and fourth at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog (more…)

Miwinter Cups, Saucers and Side Plates – SOLD

6 Nov

Midwinter 'Quite Contrary' coffee cups, saucers & side plates

Midwinter ‘Quite Contrary’ coffee cups, saucers & side plates

I never thought that I would utter such words, but I’m sure you guys are getting a bit sick of all this Midwinter! Don’t worry we’re nearly at the end of it all (nearly, but not quite!). These little cups and saucers are identical to the set that we sold last week, but with the addition of some lovely side plates (and minus two cups). The cups are on the small side, but not quite as petite as you’d expect an espresso cup to be. Perhaps a very generous double espresso? Or a slightly miserly cup of tea? I’m sure whoever buys them will put them to good use – they’re way too pretty not to use!

Note: There’s a bit of wear to the one saucer, but otherwise the set’s in very good nick!

Dimensions: Cups – 6cm tall x 8cm in diameter; Saucers – 12cm in diameter; Side plates- 16cm in diameter

Price: R200 for the set of four (12 pieces in total)

Note: Mint puts up four new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third and fourth at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog

Midwinter Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl – SOLD

31 Oct

Midwinter Stylecraft sugar bowls & milk jugs

Midwinter Stylecraft sugar bowls & milk jugs

I love the ‘modern’ shape of these Midwinter Stylecraft sugar bowls – they’re kind of crazy looking now, so can you just imagine how wild they must have looked when they were first designed in the 1950s? And it’s great to find both the small and the large versions, and to have found them in such perfect nick!

A great example of mid-century design in near mint condition.

Dimensions: Small milk jug – 8.5cm tall x 6.5cm wide x 12cm long; Small sugar bowl – 5cm tall x 9.5cm in diameter; Large milk jug – 10cm tall x 9cm wide x 15cm long; Large sugar bowl – 7cm tall x 14cm in diameter

Price: R120 for the small set/ R150 for the large set

Note: Mint puts up four new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third and fourth at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog

Midwinter Cups and Saucers – SOLD

30 Oct

Midwinter 'Quite Contrary' cups & saucers

Midwinter ‘Quite Contrary’ cups & saucers

A little taste of the fabulous Midwinter dinner service that I was talking about yesterday! Really how wonderful is this 1950s Jessie Tait pattern?! I’m not quite sure if the cups are meant for tea or coffee – I think that they’re probably too big for espresso, but maybe they’d be fine for an ordinary cup of filter coffee? The pattern is slightly inconsistent in places, but I think that’s probably a result of the manufacturing process – in terms of actual wear there are very few marks that I can see.

A wonderful bit of mid-century design that would make some collector (like myself!) very happy indeed.

P.S. This pattern really is very collectible – a full coffee set is for sale on ebay for £80 (R1400) with a set of four cups and saucers going for around R420!

Dimensions: Cups – 7.5cm in diameter x 6cm tall; Saucers – 12cm in diameter

Price: R230 for the set
