Trio of Meakin Jugs – SOLD

Trio of J&G Meakin jugs

Trio of J&G Meakin jugs

I was so lucky to find this set of J&G Meakin jugs! I bought two of them from a lovely elderly lady in Durban North, and the very next day found the matching smaller jug in Morningside – what are the chances?! The medium sized jug has a bit of wear to the base, and a small patch on the arm of the jug is missing a spot of blue glaze – a mishap during the manufacturing process, but nothing too serious. Given their age, I think they’re doing pretty well – the plain blue pattern ‘Celeste‘ (which is a bit darker than it appears in the photos) was first introduced in 1940, which makes these jugs as old as 75 years!

Note: The jugs aren’t ginormous, so please pay attention to the dimensions below.

Dimensions & Prices:

  • Large jug – R130; 13cm tall x 11cm in diameter
  • Medium jug – R100;¬†11cm tall x 9.5cm in diameter
  • Small jug – R90; 10.5cm tall x 9cm in diameter¬†/
  • R290 for the set

Meakin Espresso Cups and Saucers – SOLD

J&G Meakin espresso cups & saucers

I think that this set of 1950’s J&G Meakin coffee cups and saucers is just delightful! I love the colour, and that gold edging is a lovely touch – as is the scalloped shape – it gives it a very feminine feel. One or two of the saucers have some stained crazing, and there are some quite obvious marks on the inside of one of the cups, but for its age I think it’s doing quite well.

A very attractive set that would make somebody a wonderful house-warming or Christmas present.

Dimensions: Cups – 6cm tall x 6.5cm in diameter; Saucers – 12.5cm in diameter

Price: R180 for the set

Collection of Platters – SOLD

Collection of platters

Collection of platters

These are the last of our wedding platters – I promise! And because they’re the last ones and because I really have had my full when it comes to platters, I’m selling them at the bargain price of R55 each! There are one or two marks here and there, but overall they’re in pretty decent nick. They’re not the largest dishes, but that’s sometimes a good thing, and for the money they’re good value.

Attractive, functional and cheap as chips!

Dimensions: Each platter measures approx. 30cm long x 25cm wide

Price: R55 each

Meakin Dinner and Salad Plates – SOLD

20 Aug

J&G Meakin dinner & salad plates

J&G Meakin dinner & salad plates

I bought these rather kitsch J&G Meakin plates as part of a lot on auction – you may have noticed a bit of a surge of Meakin pieces lately – that would be the reason! Unfortunately there are only four salad plates and three dinner plates, but on the plus side there’s not a massive difference between the size of the plates, so I think it would be perfectly acceptable to mix the plates up and use them all as dinner plates. Also whoever owned this set previously got some good use out of it – I don’t think that it’s visible in the photos, but there are a bunch of fine scratches along the surface of each plate, presumably caused by knives and forks scratching along the glaze. But for all the problems that this set has, it’s still a pretty cool 1950s design, and is reasonably priced – especially if you compare it to any half-way decent crockery that you can buy today!

Dimensions: Salad plates – 23cm in diameter; Dinner plates – 25.5cm in diameter

Price: R140 for the set

Meakin Casserole Dish – SOLD

15 Aug

J&G Meakin casserole dish

This J&G Meakin casserole dish is the identical shape to the Night Club dish that we featured earlier this week, but I have to say, I think I prefer this Capri pattern – isn’t it just so cool?! I L-O-V-E it! And that turquoise lid with the matte glaze really makes it stand out. Plus it’s in near perfect nick, in fact I don’t remember seeing a mark on it!

A wonderful bit of 1960s crockery that I would love to be able to call my own!

Dimensions: 10cm tall (with lid on) x 20cm in diameter

Price: R180

Meakin Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl – SOLD

J&G Meakin Amulet milk jug & sugar bowl

J&G Meakin Amulet milk jug & sugar bowl

This J&G Meakin milk jug and sugar bowl are from the same set as those fantastic ’60s side plates that we featured yesterday, and they’re just as handsome, if not more so! I love the angle of the handle on the milk jug and the neatness of the design of the base with that subtle indent just does it for me! And then of course there’s the fantastic ‘Amulet’ pattern, which is really the real winner!

A super-stylish set that would look great mixed in with some contemporary plain white crockery.

Note: Both pieces are in great condition, with no obvious signs of wear.

Dimensions: Milk jug – 9cm tall x 8cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 7cm tall x 11cm in diameter

Price: R130 for the set
