Retro Meakin Side Plates – SOLD

J&G Meakin Amulet side plates

J&G Meakin Amulet side plates

I often worry that things look better in photos than they do in real life (I really don’t want disappointed customers!), but I think that the opposite is true of these great 1960s J&G Meakin side plates – I just love them! Not only are they in fantastic condition but there’s a full set of six of them, which is hard to find with retro crockery. Most of all though, it’s the pattern that I’m crazy about! It’s so seriously retro, but against the crisp white glaze it almost has a contemporary feel to it, if you know what I mean?

A wonderful set of side plates that will add some serious style to your next afternoon lunch party.

Dimensions: Each plate measures 18cm in diameter

Price: R130 for the set of 6

Retro Meakin Casserole Dish – SOLD

J&G Meakin casserole dish

J&G Meakin casserole dish

If I’d had to hazard a guess as to when this fabulous Night Club pattern from J&G Meakin dated to, I probably would have said the late ’60s, or early 1970s. So I was very surprised when I discovered that it was designed in 1959 – I was a whole decade out! Impressive then, given its age, that it’s in near perfect condition – the matte glaze has one or two faint marks, but on the whole it really is in good nick! I love the simple shape of the dish, and the texture of the glaze really appeals to me.

A great looking bit of 1950s crockery that will look fantastic on your dining room table!

Dimensions:  10cm tall (with lid on) x 20cm in diameter

Price: R160

Meakin Coffee Set – SOLD

2 Apr

J&G Meakin coffee set

J&G Meakin coffee set

I think that this J&G Meakin coffee set has great style! I love the shape of the coffee pot with that slim handle and elongated spout, and the colours used in the illustration are just lovely! Meakin introduced their streamlined Studio Ware range in 1953, with this particular style of coffee pot being introduced a bit later, in the early 1960s. There’s some minor wear to the rim of the milk jug, but other than that this is a reasonably clean set, especially given its years.

A fantastic bit of retro English pottery that will look great sitting on your kitchen shelf!

Dimensions: Coffee pot – 25cm tall x 10cm in diameter; Milk jug – 7.5cm tall x 6cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 5.5cm tall x 8.5cm in diameter

Price: R250 for the set

1950s Meakin Jug and Cups and Saucers – SOLD

J&G Meakin Studio Ware jug & cups & saucers

J&G Meakin Studio Ware jug & cups & saucers

I’m completely dotty for this 1950s J&G Meakin Studio Ware set! Even if it’s not quite to your taste you have to admit, it is very cool! I’m not entirely certain why there’s a jug with a set of cups and saucers, I can only assume that these are the surviving pieces from a much larger dinner service – although some sites do rather bizarrely refer to it as as a teapot! I love the fluid shape of the pitcher, and the yellow glaze is just great – I even quite like the picnic-style checkered ‘Habitant’ pattern!

A wonderful, and very functional set that epitomizes the retro style that’s been so popular for the past few years.

Dimensions: Jug – 18.5cm tall x 9.5cm in diameter; Cups – 5.5cm tall x 10      .5cm in diameter; Saucer – 15.5cm in diameter

Price: R250 for the set

Meakin Espresso Cups and Saucers – SOLD

Set of J&G Meakin espresso cups & saucers

Set of J&G Meakin espresso cups & saucers

The maker’s mark on this set of J&G Meakin espresso cups and saucers was in use from 1937, and while Sol ware continued to be produced until 1963, I’m fairly confident that this pattern dates to sometime around the 1940s. Something about the design (and of course the obvious wear and tear) tells me that this set has got a bit of age to it. I love the bold orange and green flowers, with that thick black outline –  it reminds me of some of the designs by the great Susie Cooper. A great little set with loads of character (and a few battle scars)!

Dimensions: Cups – 6cm in diameter x 6cm tall; Saucers – 12.5cm in diameter

Price: R130 for the set

Set of 5 Meakin Dinner Plates – SOLD

Set of 5 Glamour Rosa J&G Meakin dinner plates

Set of 5 Glamour Rosa J&G Meakin dinner plates

It’s a real pity that only five of the six dinner plates in this J&G Meakin set remain, but given their age I think it’s pretty impressive that any of them are still around! The Rosa pattern was first produced in the late 1930s, and continued to be manufactured until the late Forties, which makes these plates a minimum of 65 years old! There are some marks on the plates, most noticeably on the underside of the plates, but there are also some scratches on the tops of the plates – fortunately though, the wear and tear isn’t terribly obvious. Ordinarily I’d take a set of five and reduce it to a set of four – for some reason things always look better in pairs – but I really couldn’t bare to throw one of these pretty plates away!

Note: The colour didn’t come out very well in the pics – the first picture is probably the most accurate depiction of the soft pink glaze. Have a look at the creamer for sale on Replacements Ltd to get a better idea of the colour of the glaze.

Dimensions: Each plate measures 25cm in diameter

Price: R130 for the set of 5 plates
